not all Heathkit was crap. The automotive tune-up meter and exhaust

Renown automotive author Karl Ludvigsen talks about BMWs podium
finish in Australia:

<http://www.atlasf1.com/2000/aus/ludvigsen.html>

Personally, I'm not inclined to join the feel-good bandwagon
surrounding BMW-Williams' and Ferrari's finishes. Australia only
comprised 1/17th of a season. Nothing to get excited about. (which
describes some people's sentiments about F1 in general)

I have a '90 E30 325i cabriolet ( automatic ). My revs have been erratic especially
when at a stop street when the car behaves as if it wants to stop.
At first I did think it was the ICV , which is shot anyways, but the main culprit is
the Idle Throttle Valve. As a result, I have to now replace both.

Patrick,

you ask:

<<I need to replace my exhaust from the cat-back on my '84 733i.....Bosal
System....ANSA...."OEM" system...>>

First off, ANSA sucks. If you want to replace your exhaust in another year
or so buy this one. It won't survive the salt winters here in the Detroit
area. Second, Bosal is slightly worse than ANSA. Third, buy the stock
exhaust from James Dean at The BMW Store in Cincinnati (800.543.1649, tell
him I sent ya...I don't get anything out of it) at a 25% discount instead of
at Bav Auto for a 50% mark up. It certainly may vary by model but the OEM
exhaust for the 325i's is made by Boysen (sp?).

Here's another way to look at it. Is the exhaust on it now the original?
My original exhaust lasted for 138k miles. That's pretty good, especially
considering a new one was only ~$230 delivered with replacement
rubber/hardware. OEM stuff is usuall pretty good.

Since I was harsh and I'll probably get flamed anyway I will come right out
and say that the opinions of the ANSA and Bosal systems are purely based on
my collection of other peoples opinions when I (and many others over the
years) have inquired about replacement exhaust systems. I have no direct
experience with either of them. As for the Bav Auto comment, never buy
stock parts from anyone but a good dealer if you can avoid it as a good
dealer will give you 25% off parts. Whenever I've looked at parts in the
Bav Auto catalogs their price is always much higher than the prices I get
from the dealers...even comparing pre-discount dealer prices. YMMV.

Sorry I don't have a big six comparison. Hope this is helpful.

Many thanks to all who offered assistance on the E36 M3/MZ3 front swaybar
endlinks I needed; knew I could count on my brothers-in-arms.

No surprise, but UUC's very own Ben Liaw saved the day by sending me a set of
the UUC adjustable endlinks out 2nd Day UPS without even discussing
reimbursement. I can't wait to try them, they're supposedly
maximum-overdrive heavy duty units as is the UUC tradition, especially
compared to the BMP kiddy toy parts I bought. I will report back on them
next week after the race and let you know what I think.

sell your spot for $70k, buy a new M3 (or M5) and pick up a Z8 in a few years when
the price drops to "only" ~$80k ;-) if you have serious plans to buy one anyway,
you've got the $$, so let someone else pay the premium to you & use the money for
something else. it's a free market & taking advantage of it is the American way.

I believe that a certain Mr. Collie suggested that we all do this for the new Merc
SL car if we had the cash laying around. it's a prudent investment if you can
find a dealer to make the deal.

I think that it's a bit silly the way some peple are willing to pay soo much over
sticker for something, but in the case of the Z8 it will be very limited
production (unlike M5/M3, which will continue & supply will increase on), so maybe
it's "worth" it.

recall that someone mentioned that Ferrari 360's were going for $90k over stick
from the dealers in the SF area & that there was a 2+ year waiting list...

Subject: [uuc] <WOB> Bright Light Stories

Not a fog light / aircraft landing light story, but kind of funny. A while
back we were driving in a buddy's Beretta GTU. It had really bright lights
- - I don't know if they were halogens or what, but they were a lot brighter
than anything else on the road at that time. We were on a road trip, and
came up behind a cop who was plodding along, doing less than 50 in a 55. We
knew he was baiting us, and if we passed we'd get a ticket, so we just
plodded right along with him. Eventually he pulls over, lets us pass, then
turns on the rollers. He comes up to the window "You know you've had your
brights on for the past five miles?" My friend: "No sir, officer, they're
the low beams." The cop, thinking he's lying, challenges him. "Well, let's
see your brights then." He goes in front of the car, and puts his face
about 2 feet from the lights (thinking they're going to get dimmer). "O.K.,
turn on your brights." My friend hits the brights. They are so bright I
can see the cop's brain through his skull, and I'm surprised he doesn't
ignite. The lights go back down. The cop straightens up, wobbles a little
bit, and staggers towards the car with his arms outstretched. He feels his
way down the side of the Beretta, towards the driver's window. He's so
blinded, *I* can see the green and purple dots swirling before his eyes. He
points his head towards us ( I don't think he could "look" at anything right
then), and says "Ahhhh, you guys can go now." He then staggers back towards
the cruiser. It was all we could do to not start laughing until we were
under way again.

Bryan, the Jag drivers this year are Paul Gentilozzi and Jeff Altenburg.
Paul is actually sponsored by the company I work for and has won the

Also look for PTG driver Boris Said and Brian Simo (Mark's brother), Brian
drove for PTG in the Petit Le Mans in '98 I believe.

Subject: [uuc] E36 vs. E46 gizmonics

Its interesting to see how long E30 M3 comparisons
will continue for. As soon as the first E36 anything
was released it was apparant that any new iteration of
M3 would grow both in size and mass. I'm a huge fan of
the original, having had an Evo1 when I was in London.
But it must be said that government mandates certain
saftey devices/criteria anually, resulting in
manufacturers making the vehicles heavier as they
evolve.

I prefer the purist approach whereby I could decide
for myself which electronic "extras" I really need
(a/c and radio only), but BMW markets their cars to a
broader audience than us bimmerheads. They need to
attract all those who just don't know (Lex/Accura/you
know the rest).

I just hope that if the weight continually increases,
they give us 4-piston Brembo's and bags of torque.

Well that's just the way I see it,
Alpina22

Subject: Re: [uuc] Compact Axed As BMW Readies New Z2

This can be seen as nothing but amazingly good news, a step *away* from the
"one car for every need" role into which the 3-series has been thrust with
the E36 (stickering from $18K to $45K!!!) and which the E46 seemed to be
headed toward as well.

BMW needs an entry-level car that is "free" enough to discard the parts-bin
construction, similarity of looks that would cheapen the image of the
upscale versions, and drain the corporate coffers with high construction
cost.

I just wish BMW would use "adult size" engineers in this project and not
make it suitable only for sub-5'5" drivers. Why is it that the 7-series can
seat a basketball player but the 3-series seems designed for big jockeys?
Car budget has nothing to do with driver height, there must be some
psychological sales effort to make potential buyers physically uncomfortable
in the thriftier car... I'm surprised the 318ti didn't come with itchy
burlap seat covers and a constantly-playing recording of nails being scraped
across a blackboard.

Subject: [uuc] Garage Floor Paint?

Greetings Bimmerheads-

I just purchased a house which is based on a Frank Lloyd Wright design. One
of the amazing features of the house is the garage. The previous owner
collected cars. What seems like a normal 2 car garage from the outside
opens up to a parking area which would easily fit 4 cars easily and 6 cars
with some organized parking. I would like to have the garage power washed
and painted. The concrete has the usual oil and other stains. Is power
washing a good idea and if so, should I mix anything with the water?
Second, I would like to have the garage floor painted with some good stuff.
The kind of paint that many car dealers use for their showrooms. I think
it's a polyurethane based paint? If anyone can share their opinions and
experiences relating to powerwashing the garage and what type of paint works
best and lasts long, please let me know. Sadly, I had to sell my `99 M3/2
to buy the house but with a garage like that, I can dream of what to fill it
up with ;)

Respectfully,

Hassan
