Could be the new ones (made of stainless) are ok.. the older steel
"OEM type" replacements which I used to see in Roundel were soundly
cursed at by my mechanic.. this was back in the days of BOHICA, so
we're talking about 4-5 years ago..

I suspect the diff is OEM "type" vs "performance" type.

hello,
what do you guys use to get underneath your car to work on it from
there? i'm looking for something relatively inexpensive, but does a good
job of raising the car at least 18" so i can get underneath. i don't have a
bimmer (yet) but i plan to in a few weeks. i do some small weekend mechanic
work on my current '86 nissan POS, and i usually drive one wheel up onto a
high curb, then jack the back wheel on the same side up, so i can use the
sidewalk's slope to ease myself under the car. not the greatest way to do
it, i know... are those wheel stand ramp thingys (for lack of a better
description) you drive up onto, any good? how much are they about? any
other suggestions?

Subject: [uuc] Parts Source Problems?

Ever since Stephen at South Motors dropped mail order parts from his
business:(, I've been using a couple other new parts sources. One of
them was Joe Chavez at Nick Alexander in Los Angeles. I've noticed one
irritating problem with him, if I send a request for quote/order with
lots of small items, he never calls or faxes a quote or response back.
He just blows me off, even though he says he'll get right on it when I
call. If I send an order for a few big items he'll process it no
problem. That's pretty lame, not to mention rude. If he doesn't want to
take the small stuff he should just say so.

I've also tried Pacific BMW, but they didn't want to give me the CCA
discount until I asked repeatedly. Anybody have a GOOD source for
discount factory parts?

I sat in one and just laughed and laughed. I'm only 2 inches taller

I still doubt it.

yah, but if I spent that much on a car, I would still be pissed if I
couldn't drive with the top up if I had to. But if I had that much
spare change, I could get my shins shortened, and maybe take out a
couple of vertabrae...

well count me bitter too!

Bring back the E30, and raise the roofline an inch!

Alex:

I paid $125 for one set and $135 for another. Shipped. Both were bought from
Listers. I've seen used parts' dealers sell them for $200.

If I were paying $200 and I drove less than the 90% long-distance that I do, I would
go with the H&R sports ($220). Steve Shelton has that setup on his car and I like it
quite a lot.

I highly recommend using The BMW Store in Cincinnati.
Their phone number is 800 543 1649

I have also had good luck with Hendrick BMW in North Carolina. I don't have
their phone number handy but they usually advertise in the Roundel.

Circle BMW is one more place that you may want to consider. Ask for Dave
Reinhold in parts at 732 741-1184

I had a little time on my hands (hey, we college students have tons of it),
so I decided to write the seller an email, it goes as follows:

<<<<If you believe your car has that much horsepower, I have a 1000hp (yes
1000, not 100) M3 Lightweight that I'll sell you for only $60 thousand.
That's a steal for 1000 hp from a 3.0 liter motor. I added a cam, exhaust,
intake and chip, that's the reason I picked up 760 extra hp whereas you only
got 50 extra with an exhaust. I think the cool wheels and stereo on your
car probably add about 30hp too. Plus that wing and carbon fiber should be
good for about 20hp. If you add some stickers you can probably pick up some
more power. You might even want to build a roll cage out of PVC, it'll add
at least 20 easy horsepower.

Man, your 350hp automatic is probably definitely faster than a REAL 400hp
6-speed M5. With all those cool mods, you are probably closer to about 410
to 450hp depending on how many speakers you have in it. If I had the cash
I'd buy that car right up. Let me know if you want to trade for my 1000hp
M3, I'll pay the $40,000 difference of course!

Gullibly,
Semore Butts>>>>

I think the add may be a joke, I checked the guy's AOL profile and it says
he is a college student. Either way I had fun writing the letter. I'll see
if we replys. Unfortunately, I don't doubt that some fools are gullible
enough to truely believe an exhaust would add 50 hp and that a 540i could
EVER be worth $100,000.

I gotta second this. Talk with James Dean. He's great and the discount is
25%. For me it's very convenient since I live near Detroit....shipping is
very quick. Great service, great prices, a good place to do business with.

If any of you need any parts, please feel free to give me a try. The normal
discount to web buyer is about 40% off of BMW list. New to the mail order
parts business, so we are trying very hard.....

Just a thought to save us all some money.....

You can't argue that an E46 is as "tossable" as an E30 is.. The E46 is
just a lot heavier and more "plush", and possibly not as well constructed
(as Rob pointed out). The E46 could be totally stripped out until all you
have is the engine in a shell, and then become ok, but the E30 in stock form
is pretty nimble, especially the iS models. In all actuality, I would keep
my E30 and replace all the bushings and anything that could be worn out
(probably cost a lot more than the car itself..) and then get a 328Ci ;) I
actually plan on keeping my 325 for forever... sorta nostaglic, ya know?

Rob wrote:
>The same logic holds that BMW should continue the E36 as that tooling is

Not really that the E36 should continue... only if there was still a
substantial market for the E36, alongside the E46, then yes, keep the E36
going too. But what I'm proposing would only occur if it were established
that there would be a market for a "revived" E30 alongside the E46. The E30
(IMHO) has a much different focus than the E36, and an even more different
focus than the E46. I think it would be sufficient to bring back just the
E30 coupe as an entry level, aimed at people who buy things like Grand Ams
and Eclipses (Eclipsii?) and other small sport coupes. In a perfect world,
it would be available anywhere amentity-wise from the '91 318iS to including
all the new traction control features, leather, CD, power everything, but
more realistically it would be more of a compromise.

before.

Let's see Z8 at $125k or an overinflated M5? Was that a picosecond switch being
thrown?

The really sad thing about the price was that the seller thinks the stereo
set-up is hot. In fact the workmanship that I can see is not really that great
or extensive/unique.

Yeah.. but I think the Z3 has a different audience, i.e. the roadster crowd.
I would personally love an M Roadster, but I prefer the coupe style, and the
M Coupe is just too much sport (I know.. how can that be? hehe). The Z3
wins a lot of image points for cuteness. Ask lots of teenage girls what is a
cute car, besides the Beetle. It makes me wonder how used ones will be in a
few years.. Plus, I'd still like to be able to carry 4-5 people if I need
to, and I do on a regular basis.

I have driven a '97 328is auto, and it was great! So much more refinement
than my 165k+ miles E30. If I HAD to keep with one car, it would be an E36
328is, and who knows, maybe I'll get one someday ;)

One thing I definitely like about the newer cars is the SMG.. The clutch is
just a pain sometimes, but I still like the control of deciding when to
shift. If it's quick enough, I'd love one...

Thanks, you've given me an idea for the weekend.. I'll plan on a visit to
the dealer and see what all they'll let me drive!
