Rob,

You could do that in just about any car, couldn't you?

I need to call Allstate and ask about my insurance coverage anyway.
Would it be ok if I asked about a group purchase on life insurance
policies on Chester? Its only a matter of time and we could all use the
money :)

Whoa there Don. I'm not sure which Borla system you're referring to
(E28's?) but the M3 crowd loves their Borlas. Both E30 and E36 flavors,
after all they are stainless steel. You might be right about the fitment,
but mine's OK.

Hah!

Great story Chester. (hair on fire...)

I did the same thing as a teenager, but with a can of Berrymans carb
cleaner using the old IV method of hanging up the can, and making the
car run on the stuff. Cheapo plastic pipe came off, carb cleaner
everywhere, catches fire - whoosh.... Like a fool, I grab the can
off the hanger, get Berrymans all over my arms, and throw the can on
the lawn and run.

Only get my hair toasted fortunately, but by the time the fire was
out, (only took a few seconds to hit it with the extinguisher) the
harness was toast.

Ever completely re-harness a 67 Buick for the price of a tune-up?

yeah, now that's capitalism!

They did exactly that => see Z3
Weight: 2900-lbs
Performance: 6.8 secs (somewhere between *yahw* and *hehe*)

> My guess is a new E30-based entry-level car would come in

Z3 with 2.5L engine starts around $30K
Z3 with 2.8L engine starts around $36K

Remember that even the old E30 325i was over $30K new in late 80's.
So $36K is pretty good (would be equivalent to 30K with 1.85% inflation rate
over the last 10 years).

Yep, the headroom is OK ... as long as you don't try putting on a helmet.
Then it's suddenly NOT ENOUGH.

Grant, go out and drive an E36 or E46 just for kicks. No comparison.
E30 still could still pass for an inexpensive daily driver, but is no match
for either E36 or E46. Technological progress and all that.

No kidding!
I wonder how much of that BMW AG had to _give_ to Alchemy to get Rover off
their hands.
Oh, and BMW is now rumored to be selling Land Rover. Perhaps to cover part
of the $3.1B tag for giving away Rover?
$3.1B sell-off charge, $1.xB purchase price, around $2.xB in losses over the
last 6 years ... all for a Mini ... some investment.

I've always fantasized about having a nice little blue-and-red lightbar

See the story here for details...

http://www.msnbc.com/news/382429.asp?cp1=1#BODY

Here is this important part of the article:

"LONDON, March 16 :
German luxury car maker BMW AG on Thursday sold out of its struggling
British subsidiary Rover, marking an abrupt end to its costly six-year
drive to expand abroad. Germany's third largest carmaker said after an
apparently stormy supervisory board meeting it would sell the bulk of
Rover operations to British venture fund Alchemy Partners in the face of
Rover's mounting losses."

Bye Bye Rover....

Now that's Rover's gone, build us a new 2002.....

30 GHz is 3 x 10^10. Light speed is 300,000 km/s or 3 x 10^10 cm/s.
Doesn't that come out to 1 cm for wavelength?

Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>
> Also, police radar is relatively long wavelength. The frequency sounds
high, but the speed of light is high too so this results in high wavelength
as compared to the size of an M5 logo. The 30 GHz for Ka band computes to
about 10 cm wavelength (since light speed is 300,000 km/s), which is quite a
bit larger than the M5 logo. This is why I thought of the wrap around.
Basically, stuff much smaller than the 10 cm would be pretty much invisible
to the radar.

Subject: [uuc] <FS> bmw motorsport/ptg springs

during a recent 'ncc' event at the ptg race shop, a few (4) ncc
members picked up a set of bmw motorsport springs. we all bought
a set because they were supposed to be the E36 LTW springs and
they were going to give us the ride height we were all looking for.
2 other digest/ncc members also bought the same springs and have
already put them on their cars. well, the drop is much more than
the LTW springs should have been (2.25" in the front and 2" in the
rear). these are obviously some form of motorsport race spring,
but we haven't been able to confirm any details yet. part numbers
do not come up in NA books. they are definitely euro springs.

these are factory motorsport springs (4 white dots on fronts and
rears) and retail for $700+/set, based on what rick @ ptg told us.
i am about to call rick @ ptg and ask him to buy mine back (they're
simply too low for my 'daily driver'), but i thought i'd offer
them to the digest first. ron katona and james sheridan-peters
both have them on their E36s and say the ride is 'kart-like', but
not punishing at all. if you would like to email them and inquire
about the ride quality, i will put you in contact with them.

i'm offering the springs (brand new) to anyone on the digest for
$450 plus shipping. if no one is interested, i will contact rick @
ptg to take them back. email me privately if interested. thanks.

ya know, maybe it's just me, but if all of these people in the UK went out
and actually *bought* Rovers instead of standing around griping about how
BMW is pulling out, maybe there wouldn't have been a problem in the first
place.

There was an editorial in this month's Car magazine that quoted BMW would
have lost *less* money on Rover in '99 if they had stopped production and
paid each employee 30k GBP (approx 50k USD) to stay home. That's pretty
sad.

What's the PM driving (or being driven around in?) How about the Union
Leader? and all of these British Journalists?

So many choices, so much fun.......
Make mine the new 2.2 240bhp four!

It must have:
Four round headlights not hidden behind a plastic cover
Optional close ratio six speed (dog-leg?)
Be subtle, no huge spoiler please
No plague of gadgets, the basics will do.
Folding rear seat is handy and doesn't add weight

I'm only 5'6" :-) I was in the back of a two door '85 320i today
and was surprised how much leg room there was.
