Yes, I hear this story in the news almost every day, although it's not about
Rover :).

In all seriousness it may not be a bad thing for Rover to get it over with
and fold. Their cars will never be bought in large numbers, no matter how
good they are. And the 75 is very good - it's (obmwc) BMW quality,
certainly. But in Britain, where the car must succeed because of the big
fleet markets, the buying public is fickle, badge-frenzied and heavily
influenced by eloquent but bitchy, self-denigrating media. There's no way
you'll ever get a sales rep - sorry, Business Development Manager - out of
his A4 1.6 or 318i and into a Rover. Maybe they ought to stop trying.

Of course this means 50,000 jobs being lost, which for many makes the option
unthinkable (and certainly leaves me with a nasty taste in the mouth). But
the UK is still reasonably cheap as far as skilled labour goes, making it an
attractive manufacturing base compared to other European countries, so some
employment losses will be reclaimed. Furthermore the retained Land Rover, MG
and Mini divisions should expand and provide further employment. Perhaps,
even in the medium term, employment prospects might improve for existing
Rover staff.

I'm no economist and totally unqualified to comment, but it warrants
consideration, don't you think?

I've spent the last couple minutes looking through the variety of things
www.galls.com offers. I was sadly disappointed when the "Vehicle
Immobilizer" section came up empty. Darn. But, I have been able to find
some nifty accessories in the light department. My lightbar idea has now
turned into a lightSHOW idea. They have these great lights that mount just
behind the windshield and have mirrors that prohibit the light from blinding
the driver. And what about those grille mounted lights.... I've got my
grill off while I work on the headlights anyway!!! Hmm....too much to think
about. Anybody else getting ideas? Group purchase from Galls?!

Aww hell...make it three you crazy bloaks! I seriously doubt...scratch
that... BMW will never do this so we can count that off. However, I've been
thinking about how neat it would be if I started my own business that
modified Bimmers. The market is pretty full already but if this was our
claim to fame maybe we could create a niche in the market. Hmm.. and I
could install hidden flashing lights in all my projects too! Wow, the
gerbil up top is really running now...

There's no need to take it so personally, Don. And re my post about the
quality of the new cars being actually very good... oddly enough the
division with quality problems - Land Rover - is the one doing well. As for
the remaining line-up, they can't sell them, and if you can't sell you can't
make a profit. Add in the spiral of negative, socialist, good-cop-bad-cop
press plus political scare-mongering, in-fighting and chest-beating - no-one
in their right mind is going to buy a Rover.

Besides this guy Keith is probably a shop floor steward and an unreliable
commentator, with 30 years' of somewhat emotional memories of employment
behind him.

I just sold the set of M3 springs I had to a fellow lister. I bought them a
few months back thinking I'd use them but my plans have since changed. They
were the most mint pair I've ever seen change hands, less than 40k on them.
I sold them for $125 which is the high end of what they should go for.

Last I heard, a Chrysler Voyager - that's his own personal transport. For
reference the Secretary of State for Transport has two Jaguars. An official
one and a personal one. He had one of them converted to LPG after criticisms
that he was a hypocritical, socialist fool with all the public sensitivity
as a plate of lard (I'm on a roll here, sorry).

When my old man used to work for HMG they swapped all their old ministerial
2-litre Vauxhall Carltons for Rover 825 turbodiesels with the boost wound
up, to apparently good effect - at least someone had their heart in the
right place.

God forbid a British journo would be seen at the wheel of a Rover. An Audi
is much more "third way" and respectful to our European partners.

Hi everyone,

If anybody thinks discussion about revival of the E30 in some form is
unrealistic or even silly, that's nuthin'. The 3-pointed star fans have a
better idea...

Not long ago I owned an E420 (only about a year) and I joined the MBZ mailing
list. The hottest thread at the time, and taken _very_ seriously mind you,
was about what a great idea it would be for MBZ to reintroduce the 240D
(circa '78-'83). Damn thread went on and on and on. I kid you not.

The paid-for tooling was the most recurrent case made for the 240D, although
I suspect that these guys didn't realize that nobody would buy these
lumbering dinausaurs in this modern day and age.

Of course, I'd buy a new reformulated E30 over another MBZ anyway, so perhaps
I'm as much as a jaded freak as these diesel dorks.

Regards,

Dave McLaren

Subject: [uuc] Ford to Buy Land Rover

I copied this from DLJ web site:
Ford agrees to buy Land Rover from BMW - sources
DETROIT, March 16 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co. F.N has
agreed to buy the profitable Land Rover sport utility unit from
German luxury automaker BMW BMWG.F for 3 billion euros ($2.91
billion), acquiring another prestigious name in the global
consolidation of the auto industry, sources close to the talks
said on Thursday.
The deal, which includes BMW's Land Rover Solihull assembly
plant in England, will be announced on Friday, sources said.
The move would strengthen Ford's hand in the luxury and
sport utility segments. Its Premier Automotive Group already
boasts the Aston Martin, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercury and Volvo
brands. Ford's board of directors met at noon on Thursday.
Ford's deal with BMW comes a year after the U.S. automaker
bought the car operations of Sweden's Volvo VOLVb.ST for
$6.45 billion.
Earlier Thursday, BMW said it would sell the bulk of its
money-losing Rover operations to Alchemy Partners, a British
venture capital fund, in an abrupt end to the German car
maker's costly six-year drive to expand abroad. Neither BMW or
Alchemy would reveal financial details.
