Subject: [uuc] <E36> Inspection II DIY info?

I'm now due for my first Inspection II (of course, JUST past 36K mi period and
no one will service it under the maintenance agreement) and I'm not prepared
to bend over the railing if I don't have to.

Is there a good online reference for performing this yourself, or is the
Bentley sufficient? Should I do some parts myself and leave others for the
dealer? I have access to a lift if I need to and/or I've darn near all the
tools I think I'd need if I were to do this on jackstands in the garage.

Thanks folx.

So the saga is over, and in a coup de tat BMW cedes
Land Rover, if only to recoup costs of selling Rover.

Heck, they make their own SUV..er..SAV anyway.

The W123 240D is kind of like the 2002 in MBZ circles (the
W123 300D Turbo is like the 2002tii). Some people just love
simple cars that last forever (the 240D is just getting
broken in at 300K). At least the 240D will hit 100 mph on
flat pavement (back in 1981 I got a late model 240D to hit
100 on 280 passing the Crystal Springs golf course). On the
Land Rover lists there are people who are _very_ serious
about bringing back a no frills Land Rover with a small 4cyl
gas or diesel engine that would top out at 70mph. The Land
Rover list had to split in in 1996 since these people did
not want to hear about the power seat and cruise control
problems of the newer models.

The Tire Rack is advertising heavily the new Kumho Z rated tire, the Ecxata,
or something like that. The tread looks very agressive and the price is
certainly well below most other performance tires. I remember reading some
thoughts on Kumhos in the past, but I think this was mostly about R tires,(I
may be wrong) and anyway, I didn't pay any attention to them at the time.

Any thought on your experience with the brand would be appreciated.

I understand them booting the Rover car division out the door. I have a
harder time understanding the Land Rover selloff to Ford.

Check for slop in the shaft. If it's loose, replace the water
pump now; the bearings are worn, and the shaft could seize suddenly
and unexpectedly, a Bad Thing (tm).

If the shaft is snug, take your time but keep the coolant topped up.
I procrastinated for almost three months, then put in the pump I got
from Michel P at Circle Tire.

To confirm that the leak is from the shaft seal, look for coolant
stains originating at the weep hole in the pump housing.

After talking with the Tire Rack, they're not expecting to have these in until
May 1. They'll happily take your order, however.

simple math :

Alchemy "buys" Rover (may have been paid to take it off BMW's hands)
BMW takes a $3.1 billion hit against 1999 earnings
Ford buy Land Rover for $2.91 billion

things come out roughly even on this transaction, however BMW have spent
something like $3 billion in investment at Rover & have lost over $1 billion
the past several years, so nto such a good deal overall.

if it's not Ford, it's PAG. I agree that it's a bit of an odd set-up,
but that's how it's happening thus far. makes for some convoluted org
charts for sure...

I received the UUC E36 M3/MZ3 adjustable front swaybar endlinks and I must
say they are impressively heavy duty. I doubt I'll ever have any problem at
all with these pieces. Guess it will take me a couple days to get over
kicking myself for not following your advice in the first place and wasting
my money on the wimpy ones from BMP Design. BTW, are the UUC greasable
urethane Swaybarbarian bushings available yet? If so, I'll need a set of
27mm ones for my front bar, too.

Unfortunately, late Wednesday the military pulled a fast one on us and
bounced us off the event site for our first SEDiv Solo2 Series event this
weekend. Since I'm the SEDiv Solo2 Steward I've been going crazy making sure
everyone who planned to attend is informed of the last minute cancellation,
so I apologize for not thanking you sooner. Please email me back privately
and let me know what I need to do to compensate you for your assistance.

Just chalk it up as another awesome UUC experience for me.

The leaker was the hose from the cold start valve to the fuel rail. What a
PITA to get out of there. Took me about 2 hrs. But no more fuel
everywhere. Thanks again to all.

Robb,
As long as you are not bent on procuring the US OEM Douglas batteries, just
about any auto parts store will carry what you want. One of my E30s has
PepKids battery (forgot the brand name), another one has the Douglas one.
If you must have Douglas and Batteries Plus is not in your state, try
Interstate, local import car auto stores or http://www.dcbattery.com/

Kevin,
I don't think a dead 02 sensor will decrease your mileage by that much.
If the mileage is down, your car is most likely running rich (check by
inspecting the spark plugs). If so, this could either be leaking injectors,
dead coolant sensors prompting DME to fire cold start injector all the time,
high fuel pressure (bad regulator), or something else ;-)
Another possibility is that you are _leaking_ gas. Check the fuel lines,
especially around the fuel filter. Sometimes a pool of liquid under the car
is not water.
