I just bought a set for my M5 - 225/50R16 for about $85 each - versus around $160 each (or more) when they were "state of the art" last year. So far they are turning out to be great tires - low noise, high traction, compliant ride. Wear is only about 25K miles, but the price, who cares! I called Tire Rack on the price of the Yokohama AVS S1 tire. They quoted: 235x40x17 at 155.00 225x50x16 at 89.00 Folks that's a heck of a price for their stickiest tire! I've had the Yokos AVS Intermediates and AVS S1. I pd 185.00 for the AVS S1 (235x40x17) just last year. Outstanding ride quality and they stick. I got about 18,000 miles with the 17" size. Replaced them with the AVS Intermediates at 126.00 each, which is a bargain for high performance tires that are z rated. A fellow autocrosser recently bought a set of 235/40-17's for street tires on his Porsche 968 and said they were a tremendous value; $79 each! He thought they were pretty good in the wet and decent in the dry. I will probably use them next time I need street tires. While I'm sure they are a decent street tire I wouldn't expect them to be as good as the best high performance street tires, which is fine for me; that's what R tires are for. To see all of Kumho's street tires/sizes go to here and choose your link: http://www.kumhotire.com/english/tire/pro/passenger/high.htm M Sipe << The Tire Rack is advertising heavily the new Kumho Z rated tire, the Ecxata, or something like that. The tread looks very agressive and the price is certainly well below most other performance tires. I remember reading some thoughts on Kumhos in the past, but I think this was mostly about R tires,(I may be wrong) and anyway, I didn't pay any attention to them at the time. Any thought on your experience with the brand would be appreciated. >> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 18:12:27 -0500 From: "Carl M. Most (non ///M) BMW water pumps are less than $50, so if you see even a little leak you should replace it ASAP unless you want to end up buying a new radiator or a new engine (a car can heat up and warp a head before you know it if the water pump stops working). I know its sexist, but whenever I see a woman driving an M5 or 911, I assume its their husband's (though I can't believe some husband's actually let the little woman drive their cars!). Anyway, I was in the left lane going about 60, and the M5 pulled into the right lane going the same direction, and gunned it (had I not been married I would have made a special effort to meet that woman!). She quickly caught up with me and blew past- must have been going at least 90. She then turned off a few miles down the road. A couple of things that disappointed me (other than being married at that moment): 1. When the car blew past me it was amazingly quite- very little exhaust note. Sounded like a friends Lexus SC 400 that goes 0-60 in 6 seconds, but puts you to sleep while doing so. 2. To the uninitiated, the car looks almost identical to a 528i sport (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The "quietness" of the car is my main gripe. I don't think sports cars should sound like another friends Acura NS-X, which is a great car but sounds like an Integra. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have the M5, but would have to de-refine it a bit with an aftermarket exhaust, and maybe rip out some of the sound deadening insulation. I guess I'm an aging boy-racer. The result. . . five minutes down the road, the driver's side sun visor fell before my eyes. It no longer had any stiffness to it at all, the only position it would stay in was hanging in front of my eyes. So as a temp solution, I bought some self adheisive velcro and stuck that sucker back were it should. Well today, I made a trip to my local stealer, and inquired about replacing the sun visor. <GASP> They wanted $98 for it. I smiled at the parts guy, and told him velcro worked just fine for me. I turned to leave, when he offered me another solution. He gave me the number of a guy who buys wrecked BMW's at an auction, and then sells the parts off them. So I thanked the parts guy, and went home and got on the phone. Sure enough they had the sun visor and only wanted $15 for it. So I drove out and picked it up this afternoon. The guy who owns the parts yard, was extremely nice. Took me back into his yard (past the sign that read, "No customers beyound this point, our insurance will not allow it") and showed me a sorry looking wreck that had both sunvisors intack. Asked me if that was what I needed, and when I said yes, called someone over to remove it for me. Took me back to his office to pay for it, and two minutes later, I had the part in hand and was out the door on the way home. So if you live in L.A. county area, and you need a part, you might want to try giving this guy a call. he had racks of BMWs in verious stages of disasemble. So it's a good possiblity that he might have what you need. His place is called Alpine Auto dismantling and repair. And his number is (323) 221-3126. Just thought I'd pass that on to the rest of you Southern Californians. From today's Wall Street Journal column one story: "... one body of opinion within BMW mgmt. favored replacing the Rover Cars products with a new line of smaller BMW's along the lines of the old BMW 2002. The cars; called by some "the 2 series" might have even been built in England using Rover facilities. Yesterday, BMW said it now plans to develop just such a line of cars, which it described as aimed at "the upper part of the lower midsize range". BMW said it hadn't decided where to build the cars". Interesting... At least now, no one will try to fob off some Honda-derived (from the history of the Honda-Rover union) FWD stuff as a "2002". Can't wait to see what they come up with.
