Subject: [uuc] Willow Springs Track Guide

A while back somebody pointed me toward some useful track guides that someone
in the NorCal Shelby Club put together for Laguna, Sears and Thunderhill
(http://www.norcal-saac.org/ot/otbook.htm). The guides contain a track map
with detailed descriptions of each turn. Does anybody know whether a similar
guide exists for Willow Springs? The upcoming Willow Springs driving school
will be my first time at that track, so any information I can find will be
useful.

Come to think of it, if anybody knows of a source for similar guides to other
California/Nevada/Arizona (or anyplace else that's within a reasonable
driving distance for a newly obsessed So Cal driving school junkie), go ahead
and pass that along too.

Thanks,

Hello all,

I have been wanted to get the Conforti software for my '98 328is for a very
long time, but it's my only car and I can't have it "down" for as many days
as it takes for Eurosport. Does anyone happen to know if there is a
location in or around the Bay Area that I can get this yet?

Thanks,

Chad

I've thought about this before.. (not the height thing, but an entry-level
car) Why not bring back the E30!! The exterior design is still plenty
attractive, the interior could be mildly updated to today's ergo specs, and
voila, there's the perfect solution! You E30 drivers out there, imagine
your car, brand new, with even "just" the current 323 2.5L engine, and
updated ergonomics, including a cupholder (hehe)... Plus, aftermarket people
will HAVE to start making parts for the E30 driveline/body style again,
resulting in a lot of cheaper and more plentiful upgrade parts! The
development cost would be really low for BMW, since they already have most
of the engineering done, and maybe even still have some of the manufacturing
equipment.

My guess is a new E30-based entry-level car would come in little over 20k..
very affordable! Plus, it could have plenty of power, and I'm sure many
many engines could end up in one, like the S14 or maybe even the 3.2L M
engine.. oh the possibilities!! I think it could bring back the flavor of
the original 2002: be lightweight, affordable, upgradable, modifiable, and
available in a stripped down version (with the 1.9L). Plus, I've never heard
complaints about E30 headroom.. seems like enough to me (I'm about 5'9"
though..) if you put the seat down and back.

Anyone else want to start a petition? ;) Long live the E30!! I'd rather
have a brand new, updated E30 than an E46!

Hmmmm...how did you know? <g> ;-)

Actually, this reminds me of a story.....

'Lil Chester making two friend eggs
- ------------------------------------------
I was about 8 years old at the time. My grandfather owned a Chinese Takeout on
Avenue U and East 8th Street ("Bo Jen" for all you localites). Every Saturday,
I would help out by preparing the fried rice for the hungry customers. Every
now and again, I would hear a customer screaming at the top of his lungs that
he didn't want a kid cooking his food. Bite me. Business was good back
then...so much that my grandfather would oftentimes take the phone off the hook
because we couldn't handle the volume.

Anyway, my uncle lived in an apartment above the restaurant. So one day when
the store wasn't opened yet, my and uncle and I were working on one of the R/C
cars. He was hungry and told...er...asked me to make him two fried eggs. No
problemo. I head for down to the kitchen to cook up some grub. I grabbed two
eggs and headed over to the gigantic 3 - 4 foot diameter wok. I used my knee
to turn on the heat and wait and wait and wait for the wok to get hot.
Hmmm...about 20 seconds passed and the wok still wasn't hot.\

"What gives?," I thought to myself.

I turn off the gas and I lift the wok. Guess what? The pilot light wasn't
lit.

"Oh...that's why!"

I reached for a book of matches, peel one match out and light it. I lift the
wok again and I reach down with the lit match to light the pilot light. It was
right about then that I heard a loud pooof and saw a huge fireball travelling
from the bowels of the fire ring towards my face. Faster than I could even
react, I felt a warmth come over my face. *WOOOOOSH*

Startled, I dropped the wok back into the recess and checked for any damage.
My face was intact. Nothing felt like it was burning. I was A-OK!!! Alrighty
then! Well, 8 year old Chester had a very fragile ego and didn't want anyone
to know about it and just kept that little tid bit to himself. I reach for
another match and light it and proceed to light the pilot light. No poof
sounds, no great ball of fire...the pilot light is lit. We're in business.

I proceed to cook two eggs and place them on a plate and bring it up to my
uncle. My uncle was a very hard man to please. He is 15 years my senior and
loved to give a good ribbing when I did something stupid. When I brought the
eggs up, he wondered what took me so long (...I certainly wasn't going to tell
him what happened!).

"Oh.....uh....nothing."
"Chester, did something happen?"
"Ummmmm......no....why would you ask such a question?"

He reaches over to my face and then grabs a chunk of my bangs. A clump snaps
off from being burned and brittle. He then started to laugh uncontrollably...
My eyebrows, eyelashes and front bangs were burned to a crisp...

not strictly true. I am just under 6'2" and fit without any trouble. I'm
on the thin side (185ish) but have heard of lots of taller people
fitting. there was just a thread on the M coupe message board about this
& several taller folks chimed in.

huh ?? it's a roadster - why would there not be enough room for taller
people in it ?? you don't buy roadsters to drive around with the top up &
you certainly don't buy $128k roadsters as your only car & are forced to
drive them in all conditions ;-)

Have you EVER read such a bunch of politically self-serving crap
as this article? And seen as much whining from the people who
are causing the losses (the workers?)??

Jeezzeuuusss.. after how many billions of dollars (marks) thrown
down the black hole that is Rover these buttheads expect BMW to
continue to subsidise poor management, bad labor practices and
an obsolete production facility resistant to updating due to the
union contracts restricting them?

They should be REQUIRED to watch the movie "I'm all right Jack"
until they can repeat every line of it from memory..

Sheeze.. only thing that surprises me is it's taken BMW this long
to pull it's corporate head out of it's ass and see the light.

I particularly loved:

>Keith Bagnall, who has worked at the sprawling Birmingham site for more
>than 30 years, said: "We have been here before and we all know that BMW
>are only interested in the plant at Solihull and the profitable Land
>Rover part of the company."

Hey Keith - get a brain. It's all about profit. Sure - BMW should loose
money on every piece of crap coming out of your plant and make it up in
quantity so your plant can drive BMW profits down to the point where
BMW can't make competitive designs and then BMW will be exactly where
you are.

You cut out tumors when they start to spread.. that's exactly
what BMW is doing after trying it's damnest to cure the illness.

It was not a 'recall'. If the fuel-level sensor goes bad - there is
a premarked and prepunched area of the carpeting behind the passengers
seat which is opened up to replace the sensor. The prepunching is
VERY obvious even if the carpet is never opened up, and if it was
done right by the dealer - and refastened - it shouldn't look any
different than when it comes from the factory. And this was a
very infrequent problem - I have not had ANY problems with my
coupe.. any. Zilch. Nada. None. Bupkiss.

As far as recalls - are you getting a new M-Coupe or used??

There have been NO recalls (recall implies it MUST be returned at
the order of the US government). There have been some small service
campaigns which any new one wouldn't be subject to - and used ones
would have had. The ones I know of are:

1. Move some wires - effected about 20 cars total. Not criticial.

2. Replace camshaft position sensor - some (very few) failed - all
sensors to date of campaign start were replaced (and the wires in
#1 were moved)

3. Motronic reprogramming - for rough cold idle (30 second problem)
and to recalibrate the oil-temp gauge.

All of these should have been done on a used M-Coupe - if not - they
are still free. They shouldn't need doing on a new one.

Get the coupe - you'll love it!

Borla. Look at it and it rusts - which is OK 'cause it also won't
fit correctly. Best used as landfill..

Bosal makes the stock system on the E28 535i - ordered one once,
was an EXACT duplicate to what came off - including the Roundel
on the muffler.

Ansa makes crap. Some of it is pretty crap for about 10 minutes
then it turns to plain crap (the wrinkle-painted chrome tipped
stuff they make - looks nice until it gets hot..)

Alex, I've been waiting for someone to ask me this question! I've taken the
liberty of posting your question and my answer to the UUC Digest, since your
question was fairly generic and did not contain any embarassing personal
information.

This is the best part of the story. I had been offered a set for $100 plus
shipping, and all I had to do was wait for them to be removed from the car.
Then I mentioned my possible upgrades to some local Bimmerheads. My friend /
fellow CCA member Steve, who lives only 3 miles from me, says he has a set he'll
sell me "cheap". "A lot less than $100", he says. So I'm thinking, hey, no
shipping! I dropped by to look at the springs (not that I'd know what I was
looking at), and I ask how much he wants. He says, "Buy me a bottle of wine".
Of course, Steve has good taste in wines, so I can't just buy him the cheap
stuff that I drink, but still, just a bottle of wine?! And my wife and I will
probably get to help he and his wife drink the wine!

So that you can judge the value, the springs have a couple of rust spots, and
I'll have to clean off the rust and touch up the paint before I install the
springs. No big deal.

So then Steve says he'll sell me the sway bars, too. How much, I ask? "How
about some cheese to go with the wine?", he says. Except that, as you all know,
I'm not going to use his sway bars. So he'll have to get his own cheese.

But to answer your question, Alex, a couple of people told me that $100 was the
going price.
