Dan,

In late '87 or early '88 these autos were modified to prevent them self
destructing when revved hard in Neutral or Park. You probably have the later
box.
About 18mths. ago I emailed ZF in Germany regarding synthetic oil use in
these autos. Their prompt response was that it made no difference. They
could see no advantage or disadvantage in a synthetic oil. They also sent me
a list of approved synthetic oils for this gearbox. There were dozens of
them. (Sorry this was 18mths ago and I no longer have it). They finnished
off by saying any oil which met the AP4 specification. (Hope that's right,
I'm going from memory here. Take a look in your handbook). Redline, a
popular synthetic in the States, was not mentioned by name but does meet the
specification.
I had already purchased sufficient Redline auto tranny oil for my auto so I
gave it a service (filter change) and put it in. Despite tales to the
contrary from others, and my own great expectations, I can detect no
difference whatsoever with this oil. Not that there was anything wrong with
the shifting before. It may give better protection at extremely high
temperatures but I suspect that if your gearbox has reached those levels of
overheating some mechanical fault is causing it and the thing is about to
quit anyway!
I have the electronic shift EHP 22 installed in a '88 325i. It's done 95,000
miles.
IMO the bottom line here is these trannies are not noted for longevity.
However, it seems logical to me that you can maximise their life by regular,
careful servicing and sympathetic use. Highest mileage I've heard of so far
for one is 185,000 miles. Can anyone beat that?
Good luck!

Paul,
New Zealand.

Hey Fletch,

No.1 You need to get a change of ownership notification card from your
dealer or BMW NA for your car. Send in to BMW NA. Yes, you are qualified
for the remaining BMW warranty program.

No.2 Wait until about 2 months before expiration of 36 months/36,000
miles expires. The drop dead cut off period is 1 month/1,000 miles
remaining on the 36 months/36,000 miles. Then get an extended warranty.
To get an extended warranty any sooner is to prepay without any
benefits.

This is all can help you with today. Good luck.

Forget the cigars, new bimmer dads hand out new E36 oil filters. hehe

Enjoy,

L-R has a 2.5l V6 version very close to introduction & it is understood that
that version was to be sold in the US in the near future. I assume this plan
continues. Though the Freelander would be up-market relative to the new Ford
Escape/Mazda Tribute here in the states, the Escape (re-badged as Maverick) in
Europe would be a more direct competitor for the European & UK market
Freelander. other overlap is likely the Explorer vs. the Discovery in Europe.
time will tell what happens there, tho the Explorer is most likely be the one to
get the short end of the stick as I believe it has been perceived as a bit of a
"Yank Tank" and has not been hugely successful against the Jeep Cherokee & Grand
Cherokee, both of which have availabe diesel engines, which the Explorer lacks.

maybe. The 3.0L Lincoln LS comes with a 5 speed manual trans, but it's a very
low percentage of production (5% or less). the cost to certify an engine/trans
combination is often cited as reason for not producing manual trans models, but
this seems somewhat short sighted considering the likely profits made on Jags in
the states, tho I seriously doubt that there would be many incremental S-type
sales if a manual was offered. I think it's more of a marketing decision as the
perceived US buyer for a 3.0l S-type likely to be an auto trans driver anyway &
would not choose the manual.

That kills me. Time and time again, big-name manufacturers prove they don't
know squat. Fire all those marketers (sorry of that's exactly what you do,
Ben) and "focus group" analysts and spend the money on engineers, designers,
and certification. Decide to build a great car and it will sell well.

Ever see a new car go unsold? No. Every single one, even the horrible
ones, eventually gets sold and only at dramatic price-cutting once in a blue
moon (remember the $8K Dodge Monaco?).

What the manufacturers never understand is that a big part of the market is
what they MAKE of the market. If Ford decides there will be no
manual-transmission-buying Jag owners and therefore doesn't build any for
the US, guess what? There aren't any. The created a self-fulfilling
prophecy.

I'd have to really talk myself into buying a Lincoln LS and would only
consider it with a 5-speed, despite the fact that I know it is an excellent
car. It's very tempting, but it's still a Lincoln (with all the
connotations that a fresh platform simply cannot shed overnight). However,
I would scamper right over to a 5-speed Jag in a hurry! Jaguars are
supposed to be the sporting man's alternative to Benzes and such, but
without a manual tranny the attraction to that Ford-shared-platform isn't
there. The transmission choice would draw me into the showroom just to look
at it, and getting a customer into a showroom is 90% of the battle in making
a sale of any model.

Subject: [uuc] E36 Windshield Wiper Problem

Hi all,
I was wondering if anybody on the list has experienced a problem with their
windshield wiper motor. Mine seems to be running at a slower speed than normal
and continues to chatter when turned off. It is like the motor has not reached
the bottom of the cycle and keeps clicking with visible motion on the wipers
each time. It eventually slows down and stops only to restart once the wipers
are engaged again. Does this mean a new windshield wiper motor? Any help would
be appreciated.

Just wondering....you didn't ever happen to go outside on a freezing morning
and turn those puppies on while they were froze to the winshield? This
could perhaps throw internal parts out of whack.....

A common problem on the E24.

1) check and replace front bushings.
2) check for warped rotors.
3) struts and strut mounts.

Hope this in not too obvious....I have had the same problem on the M6...this fixed the

Who knows? Thats VA for you. I just copied the printout they gave me
when they did it. I do find it a bit strange that almost identical RPM

nope - I'm in Finance - I tell them it costs too much, but I work at the other
end of the spectrum - on the Focus program. incidently, I think that we have
managed to do a pretty good job of marketing the Focus - inane live comercials
aside - the question is how long the momentum can be maintained in the
marketplace. we'll see.

> and "focus group" analysts and spend the money on engineers, designers,
> and certification.

in the case of engine/trans certification it's not really a big deal
resource-wise, just a matter of the money that it will cost per vehicle sold
that makes it expensive to justify. normal figure that is thrown around is
$1mil per engine/trans combination. you spend marketing $$$ on the whole range
of available models, but its harder to justify large expenditures against small
volume variants. hopefully this attitude is changing & apparently at high
levels.

> Decide to build a great car and it will sell well.

though I have some personal dis-likes with the LS, I think they did a pretty
good job bringing a product to a market that we had previously ignored and at an
excellent price. it is apparently doing pretty well in sales as well.

exactly - see how cheap you can get M coupes for in some markets ;-) seriously
tho, I agree. I think that in the case of the S-type the perception is that we
don't "need" the added sales that we might get from having a manual 3.0l
available. it may also be that we are running at capacity to meet current
sales.

yep. they may have done the math & looked at the number of vehicles that are
sold in the US int he luxury & near-luxury market & decided that the $$$ was
better spent elsewhere. time will tell if they are right.

the production figures are very low for the manual LS relative to the rest of LS
production. The manual LS may be a lower selling car than the E39 M5 in the US
actually... it does not bode well for future development of the manual, tho the
trans will always be available since it's common with the European market
S-type.

indeed. Making the V-6 available with the manul would be silly-easy as the
parts are all existing & in production for LHD European markets, so perceived
demand would be the only barrier. I think that generally Jag is perceived as
"softer" in the States than in Europe, which likely is why the manual market is
not seen as big enough.

I bet you'd run to try out the new S-type with the "R" treatment - from spy
photos & info it looks to be somewhere between M3 & M5-power, tho it will only
be auto trans I believe. no clue on release date to production tho. the XJR &
XKR are consistently well-reviewed against BMW/Merc/Porsche & they are
auto-only, so we'll see how the S-R does.

I'm still holding out for Ford to purchase BMW outright, but that's another
complete kettle of fish....
