Honda has chosen to make entry in the automotive market to make the kinds of cars that it makes: softer suspensions, quiet, smooth running engines, and low price. BMW doesn't make a car that competes against the Civic because it has chosen a different market segment. To compare the two is just plain silly. You have to cut away the marketing and look at their effective engineering abilities. If you believe that Honda, Toyota, Ford, or any other company can't make a BMW-like tuned suspension, you're sadly mistaken. You don't actually believe that they don't have the technology or the ability to dump the money into research, do you? They have a market segment and they cover it very well. The NSX, for example, is a fine example of a car which is in a niche market. Sure you can get a faster car for less money -- a Mustang Cobra will probably beat it in a drag race with plenty of money to modify its suspension to give it a run for its money through the twisties. But it shoots for a market which is unique: to build an expensive sports car that wealthy executives won't wrap themselves around a tree with. Your preferences for an ideal car (which are absolutely dead-on, btw) simply don't translate into what's best for the market. People in Lincolns want nice cushy rides with suspensions that absorb everything but the biggest potholes. Just because Honda produces FWD cars with four-cylinder engines says nothing about their engineering talent. You'll note that they are considered some of the best engines in the world and just because it isn't enough power for you doesn't mean you should discount it. My wife keeps me on a pretty strict budget. I'm not complaining - I'll be well-off in my golden years thanks to her efforts. The wheels on the car are in fair condition at best. At least two have small dips from potholes, most have pretty good curb rash. I think the spare may be straight. I haven't studied the inner beads, so they could be a mess for all I know. So, here's the deal ... I'd love to be able to justify 16" wheels and tires on at least semi-sincere financial and safety grounds so my "financial adviser" would approve. What's the poop on TRX's as far as traction, tread life, and cost relative to reasonable quality 16" tires for a daily driver. I figure if I wanted straight wheels, used TRX's probably go for ... what ... $50 ea? I figure I can probably get decent used or take-off 16" wheels for about $500. Any leads on cheaper sources for wheels would be welcome - but I'm not interested in "American Racing" I would also consider switching to 15's - which I'm sure would be a lot easier to "justify", but not quite as rewarding. As always ... Thanks, folks. Honda would have to use struts up-front to do that. I dunno if Honda engineers would be happy with this backward technology, poor camber control and all. Oh, and what is it, Z3s, S2000's direct competitors, use semi-trailing arms in the back. I don't think Honda has ever had anything so primitive in any car. BMW does seem to be able to tune flawed basic design extremely well, though. BMW content: I do love M3's rear multi-link suspension, seems to work amazingly well. Unorthodox but great. Eberhart" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Advantages & Disadv of 2 dr vs 4 dr I chose the 4dr over the 2dr for the following reasons. Unless you can afford an M5 (purchase price on a newer one, or the maintenance on an older one), the '97 and '98 is the only other 4 door BMW ///M car available. Because of that, and since it was only made for only 2 years, I suspect it will have a reasonably good resale value. Also since the E36 4dr was sold from 1991 through 1999, body parts are pretty easy to come by. Only the bumpers, mirrors and sideskirts are ///M specific (as far as body parts go). Also the 4dr is a little more stealth. Your family, spouse, fellow employees and hopefully the local police will not look at it as a sports car. But it has the same performance charecteristics as the 2dr. It's a very practical car for both street and track use. Try going to a business lunch and convincing people your 2dr is the best choice (I prefer to drive rather than be driven). The 4 door seats 4 adults comfortably. You can even fit 3 small people (kids) in the rear without a problem. If you ever need to put a childseat in the car, you'll be glad you have the doors on the rear. If you do the occasional track event, it's easier to load stuff into the back of the 4dr. Again, the 2dr was available from '95 - '99, so there's a LOT of them available. The 2 year span of the the 4dr (although a LOT were sold) makes them a little bit less common. I see lots of 4dr automatics for sale, but not as many 5spd. I think the smart guys are holding on to them. Of course, this is only the opinion of a very happy 4dr M3 owner. - - Chip __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LTW Flywheels in the M3 give you a real nice 'scoot' off the line, useful for power stoplight launches and autocross in particular. They have two bad habits: One is they can cause a rattle at idle, as you describe, that sounds like a bearing going out to lunch. The other is they make your engine stall when de-clutching as you would coming up to a stop light, etc. This last annoyance is most irritating. Solution is to get a custom burned Jim C.
