Subject: [uuc] 98 pre-production M3 has a 328ic VIN???

Hi all, I have a very interesting problem I need your insight on:

I am in CA and dealing with someone on the East coast that gets BMW cars
from Germany, some independent car dealer. These cars are used and done to
US spec, but with the german turning lights and the tempered glass headlight
covers also so I know for sure they are coming from Germany.

The issue I have is that the car was recently titled by this dealer in MA as
a 97 328ic 3 weeks after its arrival to the US. The VIN # on the car itself
lists as a 97 328ic but the car in fact is a pre-production 98 M3 so the
dealer says. The dealer has a MA title and the german briefs. The german
briefs only list the VIN # (a stamp with a line in which the VIN # is
written on in ink), but no indiciation of the model of the car. The car is
under full warranty, and BMW NA just sent the dealer notification that the
warranty was transferred from Germany to the US and is valid BUT for the
328ic. I don't want to take it to the dealer and have them mess it up by
ordering 328 parts for the car when I need M3 parts...etc.

So, I don't want to buy this car unless I can get the VIN switched to an M3.
The dealer said they can't do this since there was no 97 M3 convertibles
when the car was manufactured (first few off the line in 97 - 5/97 to be
exact and first registered in germany in 6/97) so they couldn't have
assigned a M3 VIN back then.

Having said all that, I called BMW North America and they unequivocally said
that the car is listed in NA as a 328ic and they even called BMW Germany and
they also said the car is a 328ic and they said there is no way it can be an
M3.

Even more boggling, is that I had the car taken to a BMW dealer who said it
was for sure an M3 and checked all the VIN #'s on the body panels etc. One
thing BMW NA said was that sometimes when a preproduction car comes out,
this VIN issue crops up but is taken care of by making amendments to the VIN
or something to that effect - and I have no amendments on mine or on record.

So, I don't want to register the car here in California as a 328ic and not
only that, get insurance for the car as a 328ic (and worry if it gets
totalled that I get the price of a 328ic) and then deal with the hassle when
I ever sell it when the buyer questions why the title says 328ic.

Any thoughts as to what I can do? I am going to call BMW NA one more time
and hope I can do something, otherwise I might just avoid the hassle and not
risk it. Do you think it's possible to do something at the DMV such that it
lists as an M3 so I can get an M3 title and then get insurance for the M3
conv. not 328ic?

Regards

Great commercial from Audi (yeah, I've got a little girl).

Does anyone know what the music is? Haunting and beautiful.

Thanks.

Chris,
I'll try and answer your question first and then editorialize. Stay away
from anything electric, the only thing that will last and give you
decent pressure is a gas powered one. I started out with an electric
1200 psi MucCulloch which didn't last much past a year. Replaced it with
an 1800psi 5hp Sears that has lasted 6 years and works great. I think
the sears cost me ~$300?
<editorial>
Don't wash your car with it. I bought mine primarily to use to get the
brake dust off wheels. I don't even use it for that now. I use it for
many things around the house but I treat my cars better than that. But
then as I get older I get even more anal about my cars.

Well, Ahmad, look at the engine. Is it the 2.8L (328iC) or is it the Euro
3.?L (M3). That should tell you, but since it is used, the previous owner
could have done an M3 conversion of some sort, so it's still hard to tell.
Either way, if it has a 2.8L, you know it's NOT an M3.

What is the wise choice:
A really nice 88 535i for $6000, or a nice 91 525i for $10,000.
When you look at the whole picture, durability, power, fuel, maintenance costs,
quality, ride, noise, styling, comfort, suspension, dependability........
Which is the way to go, E28 or E34.

If it's the yellow, electric one, I own one myself and love it. Great for
cleaning your driveway, washing your house (especially if it's got a wood
exterior), etc. I take it easy on the car with it, however. From a distance
it does a good job of soaking the car quickly and getting off soap, but I'm
hesitant to get near the car with it on full blast. ;) It's not a substitute
for elbow grease for washing your car (or wheels), but it's real nice
nonetheless.

Subject: [uuc] Frozen rotors, downside

Always a trade off isn't there? A couple years ago a BMW race team
showed up at a professional event with those fancy new "frozen rotors"
on both their race cars. After a couple practice sessions, one of the
drivers comes in and explains to the crew chief how he's got both feet
pushing on the brake pedal as hard as he can and the car still won't
stop. They spent the rest of the morning trying to find some new, used
or worn out rotors (maybe someone was using them to anchor their canopy
down?) so they could make the race. Seems the rotors were so hard the
pads couldn't get enough bite on the surface to do the job, or the pads
overheated, or the heat transfer to the calipers cooked the fluid.
Rotors are wear items. You use them up, you replace them. A super-hard
rotor that lasts forever and never warps might be a false economy...

Friends, Summer is almost here...

I am thinking of installing a Korman ceramic header on my 325i. Normal
diameter is 1 1/4", but they offer a street version at 1 3/8", This is the
one that I am considering. Have you done this mod? If so, how much low end
torque can I expect to lose? How much louder is the new header? Is there a
drone at a certain RPM that will annoy riders over a loud trip? How much HP
can I expect to gain? Is it evenly distributed over the power curve? Do
you recommend this mod?

Jason,
Thermostat has little to do with idle control (other then effecting coolant
temperature) and absolutely nothing with starting a car.

Do you also see black smoke coming out of the tail pipe when it does start?
Are your spark plugs black and gummed up? Then your diagnosis of a flooded
engine is correct.

I believe yes.
Bad pressure regulator?
Leaking injectors?
Leaking cold start injector?

> And what are the chances of the fuel pump check valve not working,
> or the injectors leaking?

Pretty good.
Do you have most of the starting problems with the cold engine (after the
car has been sitting for a few hours) or hot engine?

> I have tried to put a check valve in the gas line before the
> pressure gage to isolate the problem but I don't seem to get

A bad fuel pressure regulator would do this.
If it allows the pressure to build up too high, the gas might make it past
normally closed injectors and flood the cylinders regardless.
Fuel pressure regulators go into an intermittent mode before failing. A new
one will run you around $60 (that's what it was for my '89 325i, yours may
be different). Expect to pay 1/2 that for a used one.

good luck,
alex f
