Hi Steve,
I just took a look at pics. Those look a little big to be from the
timing belt. If they are, I would be amazed if the motor would run at
all. I think if you put the pieces together, they form a "U" shape of
sorts. There is a place on the under side (I think) of the air box that
part of it fits on to support the air box. I remember it coming off
when I was working on it a while ago. Of course, I find this thing
after I put it all back together. Uh oh, where did that thing come
from??......... I hate it when I have extra parts left when I put
something back together ;-)

Just make sure about this before starting the car.

Good luck,

Mike Orth

On the heels of the recent Rover divestment comes this distressing piece:

German Auto Engineer Issued Lab Coat
DUSSELDORF, GERMANY--Karl Meine, a new engineer at BMW, was issued a white
lab coat Monday, giving him the air of a man at the forefront of German
automotive technology. "Karl will wear his lab coat and observe BMW
prototypes being driven at extreme speeds on sheets of gleaming ball
bearings," said BMW chief engineer Gunnar Hoechst. "He will also stand
before a wall of computers as cars are subjected to advanced 59-point
wind-tunnel tests in stark, white rooms." In addition to the lab coat, Meine
has been issued a clipboard.

Well, OK, distressing only because of its source: <http://www.theonion.com/>

That's what I meant by 'trimmed the corners.' I couldn't remember the
correct term.

Any other ideas?

Does anyone (Brett) know if its possible to replace the LCM and/or some
other parts to enable daytime running lights on an early build (7/96)
E39? DRL's are not currently listed as an available option on the car
memory print out. Also can any BMW cell phone fully integrate with this
car, i.e. phone control from MID and wheel? THe CPT-4000 and CPT-4500
offer only partial integration.

Thanks

This comes from www.formula1.com. Anyone from over the pond able to give a
take on the reliability of the Daily Mail and/or read more of the story and
see if it sounds real?

*quote starts*

Only a week after one of Williams' sponsors Castrol was taken over by rival
firm BP, new worries have arisen for Sir Frank Williams. According to a report
in the London Daily Mail Ford has negotiated a deal with the Quandt family,
the majority shareholders of the German car manufacturer, to buy BMW. The
German marque will supposedly be integrated into the portfolio of luxury
brands of Ford's Premier Automotive Group.

The Daily Mail quotes an undisclosed source from within the Munich based firm
confirming the 10 billion british pound deal. Lawyers are said to be in the
process of preparing the papers in order to allow the transaction to take
place in October. Alongside Aston Martin, Volvo and Land Rover Formula1
newcomer Jaguar is also part of PAG.

It remains to be seen whether Ford would allow two brands within the Group to
compete directly with one another in a high profile technical marketing
showcase like Formula1. As Jaguar's entry in the Formula1 World Championship
has been marketed with enormous effort and considerable budget, the withdrawal
of BMW from Formula1 would seem more likely.

I assume your rear rotors were not replaced? They are probably worn a bit
and are shaped like a dog-bowl in profile. This is totally normal. What
may be happening is that your pads are contacting just at the edges where
the rotor is thicker/curving up (not the lip).

Solution to this is the chamfer your pads - use a file to grind off the
corners a little.

Good luck!

I just call the DMV here in IL. You can run a title search and it will give
you the owners, salvage, flood vehicle, and smog info. Don't know about
other states, but that's the deal here. If you call and they say they
can't, it's simple gov employee laziness. Call another branch.

(Police) Laser and IR overlap in frequency, or is it some other
characteristic of IR that does it?

I've heard that there's an OEM hitch for (at least MY) E34 available,
only from Germany though. Could be wrong on that as it was some time
ago and I've lost the email.

Near as I can remember, it was bolt-on.

Subject: [uuc] CMP... any advice?

I'm going to be hitting CMP in April, and having never been there
before (but I have a printout of the track), I was wondering if there
were any hidden gotchas or any advice anyone could give me before I
go.

I'm still very very new, so I'll be (as a friend says), little more
than a poor voice activated driving unit for my instructor, but any
information you could forward me would be great.

Incidentally, this is with the PCA club, and my car weighs more than
the standard P-car. Anything that I should pay particular attention
to in case the instructor is not used to a big car? I've made PCA
aware of the car weight and reqeusted an instructor familiar with big
sedans, but you never now.

Thanks!
