Subject: [uuc] Crackling exhaust

I noticed recently that about 30 seconds after I switch my car off, there's
a crackling sound coming from below my car approximately where the catalytic
convertor is. I'm not talking about the usual ticks and groans that
expanding/contracting metal would make, but more like sizzling liquid. Can't
seem to pinpoint exactly what it is or where its coming from, but would like
to know if it is something that is normal or something that I should have
investigated.

Thanks,

Eugene

Subject: [uuc] Choosing an alarm system

Hello,

I am a proud new owner of a '95 M3. I am looking to install (or have
installed) an alarm/keyless entry. I am considering the factory unit, an
Alpine 8028 or maybe a Stellar (full page ad in Roundel). I'm leaning toward
Alpine because if its good name, features, especially its module to close
windows and sunroof, and I've heard the BMW alarm is also made by Alpine.

Are BMW owners happy with Alpine after marked alarms? Any problems or
concerns with any of these systems? Suggestions?

FWIW I use 5W30 in my car in the hot months. Just get a feel for what
the viscosity indicators mean and purchase accordingly.

Please don't post F1 results.

Why ?

Because people watch the race at different times based on timezones,
tape delays, personal schedules etc and may not have seen the race yet
and don't want to see it in the UUC digest by accident.

It's really not fair, and serves no purpose.

If people want F1 results, they know where to get them.

Thanks,
Shiv

Joe,

Can't you just close your eyes and not look at the posted results? Why
worry about regulating an outcome you can't control?

The shinier the better according to Mike Valentine.

A week or so ago, he dropped by a chapter meeting in Cleveland for a chat.
I specifically asked, "matt or gloss" when he said black was best and he
unequivocally replied "gloss, the deeper the shine the better the
protection".

Therefore, we should all go buy C5 Corvettes in gloss black, with V1 laser
detectors. Those scumbag revenue collectors out there are far too thick to
stay off the trigger longer than normal just 'cause the car's black, so your
detector will go off and he won't get a reading.

'Course, that won't stop those lying sacks of shit from pulling you over and
ticketing you anyway. 'Cause we all know they don't care what the equipment
says, they're just after the money.

I got a 328ic from a dealer in December, and had a chance to drive
it from Boston to N.Y last week...I parked it in several locations,
doing shopping and museum stuff, from about 10a to 4p, during which
time, much rain fell. I also went from upper West down to thirtieth,
without any braking problems, which are as follows:
Heading home in steady rain and roadspray, there was plenty of stop
and go until the Bronx, where naturally, everyone goes like hell..so I
was on gas, no brakes for at least 2 mins when some idiot in front
brakes for all hell. You probably know the mind to stomach feeling
when you stomp on the pedal and the car feels like its holding its own,
certainly not decellerating with BMW brake grab.
Over the rest of the trip, which was indeed in downpours, I tried to
see how long the brakes took to become ineffective-which I read as
WET-once left alone. By the clock, every two minutes was enough to try
them and feel the same or even higher brake pedal effort, and no feeling
that the car's speed was reduced until I released and applied them a
second time. This produced normal feel and effect, but one isn't to
pump brakes every two minutes on a rainy highway to dry them out !?!!!?!
Of course the dealer can find nothing wrong, including that the pads
are 40%worn in front and 50% in back, and they are stock/OEM.
I am also quite pissed that they are unlikely to keep the car long
enough to encounter the rains on a highway. Leaving that aside, is it
possible I have a lemon.? I am not going to keep this car long if "no
problem found=major accident".

You always have had a way for words. <g>

Reminds me of when a VA cop stopped me. He tells me, "it must be pretty
hard to keep your speed down in this car. " No sir, you don't need to
flatter me, it's a 4 cylinder, it's not that fast.

BTW- THEY were in force on the Capital Beltway [Washington DC] on this

Subject: [uuc] shifter woes

On the good side: I'm getting pretty facile removing the sheet metal console from my
'83 533i.

On the bad side: I need to do a run down to San Francisco on Tuesday and I'm not
getting fifth gear unless I leave the driver's side bolt to the transmission loose....
Which is why I started mucking about with the console in the first place!

When I bought the car shifting was like stirring a big ol' cauldron. When I
discovered that the console was flopping around loose due to mounting bolts torqued to
3 turns from finger tight and finger tight I felt pretty smug. Pulled the console and
righted it's wrongs. Reinstalled. And then did it again. And again. The shifter
will just go into fifth gear detent but not far enough to engage the power train. The
aluminum blocks don't look worn down (but I flipped them to engage a new wear surface
anyway). The sheet metal of the console has been massaged to make the mounting points
flat again.

Local Oregon dealer has been without parts except for lightbulbs and told me my OBC
was shot when it really needed a fuse in the electronic control module. My confidence
in them is getting pretty slim.

Any good advice for me? (yah, yah Delrin bushings, short shifter) - But we are rolling
out on Tuesday!

Thoughts?

Looking for new eyes - Tom

So much for CNNfn being a reputable source. Uh, what was it about that stock
tip from them last week?... :)

I've never heard of The Daily Mail, but It's surprising to see such fluff on
the CNNfn site.

Ah well, I for one, would very much like to see BMW remain independent for
many, many more generations of Quandts...

You're kidding right? Two weeks ago, when F1 was in Aussieland, results
where getting posted to this list 30 hours before I would get to see it on
television....
Let's try it this way.
It's like taping the superbowl because you've got to be somewhere, and then
getting home to start it, and someone telling you who won as you walk in the
door. Kinda' makes it pointless to sit thru the whole thing if you already
know what's going to happen.
Does that help explain why he's a little upset?
