I have an E39 with tires and wheels upgraded to the owner's menu recommended 235 40 18
front and 265 35 18 rear with Bridgestone S02 Pole Position and my country of
residence is HK. The car is also equipped with M technic suspension. Here the highway
design are not as generous as the States or elsewhere in the Europe so we got some
tight bends along the roads. Last weekend I have a street race with a cocky MB driver
on a highway. It was a C280 probably with 17" wheel and tires. While going over a bend
with expansion joint my car was precisely on track under control and tires sticking on
the road surface and speed is about 100. The MB sort of jumped up and got out of
control I think mostly due to its narrow tires with less grip, suspension setting
maybe? It probably scare the sh*t out of him and there he cut back to the slow lane.
Just feel I should share this with a group of Bimmer enthusiast.

I'm considering purchasing a 1994 525iT which has vinyl seats (I didn't
know vinyl was offered on such a car!). Does anyone have any experience
or opinions on this material? Does it hold up OK? Does it look OK?

Thanks in advance--

Those rotors with the slots in them; useful? Gimmicky? (I'm talking
specifically about the ones with the one continuous slot in them in
the shape of rounded out 5 pointed star, though opinions on any of
them are welcome.)

I have a Da'Lan hitch on my '98 M3 that has served well pulling a small tire
trailer. I bought mine from Hitchmasters http://www.hitch-web.com I don't
tow the trailer anymore but not because of any problem with the hitch. The
Hitchmaster guys will fax you the installation instructions with no
obligation so you can see what it takes to install it. Let me know if you're

Subject: Re: [uuc] <E30> ICV adjustment screw?

The "idle adjustment screw" as I call it sits immediately atop the
ICV (at least on '85 E30s). It actually regulates the amount of idle
air that "bypasses" the ICV when the ICV is completely closed.

Remember, the ICV is controlled by a pulse-width modulated 12V square wave.
When the wave tells the valve to "close", the bypass adjustment screw allows
a small amount of air to bypass the valve and enter the intake manifold. This
amount of air also bypasses the ICV when the ICV is opened.

Thus, when the ICU or ECM tells the ICV to go to "low" idle, the air is not
completely shut off (it never is really, since on working systems the square
wave is not ever in a steady state "on" or "off" condition).

Assuming the syste is working properly, the adjustment screw can be used for
setting a "baseline" idle speed, to some extent. Turning the screw inwards
reduces the amount of bypass air (and tends to lower the idle a bit). Turning
it outwards increases the amount of bypass air, thus raising the idle slightly.
You might want to check Bentley, I might have the directions reversed.

I've found that best results are obtained by performing the adjustment with the
A/C on (compressor running).

I know it's old news, but since each manufacturer is slightly different...

Is anyone running Yokohama 225/45-16 on a lowered E30 without fender
rolling? I know 205/50 will fit easily, but I'd rather have the larger
section width. The car is a '90 325i running H&R springs, and offset
upper strut bearings--2 degrees negative camber up front and 2.7 degrees
in the rear. They will be going on 16x7.5 wheels.

Thanks

What no Chem Eng's to reply to this one? If I recall properly, iso is the
one to use. It will bind with the water in the gas tank and allow water to
be burned during combustion. Methyl will (memory getting fuzzy) drive the
water out of the gas and leave it in the gas tank to collect. I think its a
hydrophillic vs. hydroscopic sort of thing.

Subject: [uuc] M3 Exhaust recommendations?

Hi Everyone:

I've been off the list for a few months so please forgive me if this was
just a hot topic and everyone has just finished this to death, but I'm
considering Jim Conforti's OBDII software upgrade and Intake upgrade (he's
still at or near the top in this department I assume).

Anyway, I also want to add a new exhaust at the same time. I'm not
expecting a lot of ponies from this but want a good (but not harsh) sounding
exhaust. Who makes a compatible, bolt-on, legal in California, exhaust?
Supersprint from BMP looks good on paper - has anybody tried this with Jim's
products? What about the Dinan system - it's about $300 more than the
Supersprint.

Are these truly bolt-on - just me and my tools or should I get a local shop
to install?

Will Jim's software take advantage of the freer flowing exhaust (or will it
even be less effective)?

Thanks in advance.

I'll be travelling to Duesseldorf, Germany in May for a trade fair and will
have about 2-3 weeks after for a holiday. My family will be joining me
there, so I was wondering if anyone on the list could recommend places I
should visit (car-related or otherwise) while I'm there. Email me privately
if you wish unless other listers would be interested as well.>>>>>>>

A visit to the Nurburgring would be at the top of my list. A few laps will
put you in the right frame of mind. If you like mountains, go south. For
castles, go east. For wine and castles, do the Mosel River, jump the Rhine
and continue on Lahn River valley. A few more laps of the Ring will complete
the tour.

an authorized Bosch dealer and use Bosch equipment to clean, test and repair

Subject: Re: [uuc] M3 Exhaust recommendations?

Check out the Unofficial E36 Page for a comparison test of exhausts.
Having been investigating same issue, I can tell you that
Supersprint is considered the loudest, but also the best gain
4-8hp...TMS denies there is a quieter model, but at one point there were
at least two types.
     I would recommend a M exhaust, since there isn't a hell of a lot
other than sound or aesthetics to the switchover...I have heard that
from several chip/air box installers, including a BMW Dinan authorized
installer, who likewise suggested the several brands other than Dinan's
as several hundred dollars less, "but the Dinan has a shiny all aluminum
construction."
Good luck for D.I.Y..all I can tell you is don't expect your BMW
dealer to supply any help with the changeover if you have questions.
They seem to be trained to not know anything that has the slightest to
do with changeovers that use BMW parts!
