I've had good luck with those on a non-BMW. Much better than cross-drilling
(which always cracks except for the Porsche rotors which are cast, not
drilled). Hard for me to say the comparative benefit compared to stock as I
was installing bigger brakes, but a friend that replaced stock with
same-size ATE "atom slot" rotors swears they feel a lot better.

If there is nothing interfering with the shifter, your problem is a worn out
fork inside the transmission.

I discovered that the console was flopping around loose due to mounting
bolts torqued to 3 turns from finger tight and finger tight I felt pretty
smug. Pulled the console and righted it's wrongs. Reinstalled. And then
did it again. And again. The shifter will just go into fifth gear detent
but not far enough to engage the power train. The aluminum blocks don't
look worn down (but I flipped them to engage a new wear surface anyway).
The sheet metal of the console has been massaged to make the mounting points
flat again.

You're kidding right? Two weeks ago, when F1 was in Aussieland, results
where getting posted to this list 30 hours before I would get to see it on
television....
Let's try it this way.
It's like taping the superbowl because you've got to be somewhere, and then
getting home to start it, and someone telling you who won as you walk in the
door. Kinda' makes it pointless to sit thru the whole thing if you already
know what's going to happen.
Does that help explain why he's a little upset?

NO!!!!!! F1 isn't anything like the Superbowl! F1 is IMPORTANT! The
Stupidbowl is a terrible analogy. You're de-valuing F1, Dave! That's like
saying you shouldn't spoil the ending of the Jerry Springer Show: "Oh yeah,
man. I seen this one b'fore. That girl turns out to be a guy and he was
sleeping with that other dude's mom and they all end up in a big fist fight
and Jerry's final thought is for people to be nice."

No, F1 is infinitely more important and interesting and (sometimes)
unpredictable. A better analogy would be like, um.....,
well.....................hmmmmmm. I know! Like if you tape a WRC race and
someone tells you the results before you get a chance to watch it yourself.
There! That's a perfect analogy that EVERYONE can understand perfectly.

Now less pissed,

Just as another data point, my Ate powerslots warped about the time I
looked at them as I was installing them (OK, well, within 60 easy
commuting miles). I would *not* recommend them (except to a
competitor in a race :=)). I only got them 'cuz the shop had them in
stock (for my E34 525i) and didn't have the Balos in, etc. If you
want slots, get some Balos from Steve D. and send them to Jeff at
Driver's Edge....

To all who e-mailed...thanks for the recommendations.

After talking to Rob Levinson, I'm going to try Jim's software, intake, and
Rob's exhaust system. This seems like a good "package" for increased
performance, sound, and looks; without opening the engine and not too much
money (under $2,000).

Now the only problem is Jim's new "Shark Injector" won't ship until May (or
later) - how can I wait? Maybe if he stopped sleeping at night :)

I'll post remarks after I get everything installed.

A 225/45 is not (well, maybe 2 or 3 mm) wider than a 205/50. It is just
measured on and designed for a wider rim, 7.5 compared to 6.5. The tread
should be a bit wider and flatter. It is also more sensitive to camber.
Generally, for strut suspension, it is better to use the 50 on the front and
the 45 on the rear.

Subject: [uuc] <E36> wheel upgrade query

Hi all,

I'd like to poll the opinion of fellow bimwads about a wheel upgrade. This
topic might have been beaten to death before, but please bear with me here.

My '93 325i has the stock wheels (15") on it and I'd like to upgrade. What
would be the pros and cons of going 16" or 17".

This bimmer will be more of a semi-daily driver and mostly pleasure cruising.
However, I intend to attend at least one driving school every year. I've been
to a driver's school last september and will go again for NJ's last school in
LimeRock this year.

Please help me out.

TIA,

BTDT on a real BMW (2 wheeled one, K100 engine, 4 Cylinder, FI..)

What is done at a reputable shop (and no real 'rebuilding' actually
takes place - the injectors are basically a crimped together non-
rebuildable device) is:

1. Reverse flush - they flow cleaning liquid through an energized
(open) injector in a reverse direction to normal flow. This cleans
accumulated munge & crud (tech-terms!) out of the micro-screen on
the input of the injector. No matter HOW much FI cleaner you pass
through in the normal direction - some crud is going to get trapped
in these screens. This is the only way I can think of to get it out.

2. Flow/pattern test - hooking the injector up for normal flow
direction - they usually will do a flow and pattern test. If they
use solvents at this point - it may do some cleaning of the injector
tip. Goal is - matched flows between injectors (and original spec)
and good spray patterns. Some shops combine this with ultrasonic
cleaning of the injector tips while it's operating.

3. Replace pintile(sp?) cap - they just seem to do this. This cap
can get crudded up from 'hot-soak' cycling of the injectors, seems
it's easier to replace them then clean'm.

4. Remount with new O-rings. Take the injectors to the shop mounted
to the fuel-rail (easiest way on a 535i anyway..). Let them risk
breaking the injector getting it off the rail (the old O rings tend
to stick in place, making removal difficult), and let them fight
getting the injectors back on the rail with new O rings (new ones
are usually a VERY tight fit).

When I had this done - they provided new O rings for both the
injector to rail connection and the injector to head connection.

My cost was about $22/each. Your price may vary..

BTW - place to look for this service? Diesel truck injection repair
places. Apparently a lot of them have spotted the automotive market
as a good profit center and have bought the machine required to do
this..

Subject: [uuc] <E28> 528e tire question

It's about time for new tires. I'm sticking with the stock 14" rims. I'm
inclined to also stick with the stock 195/70 (and obviously R14) size. A
previous owner fitted it with a set of Michelin X Ones, and they're nice
enough tires, but they dry rotted before they wore out! I was hoping to fit
something a little more sporty, but sporty tires don't seem very prevalent in
195/70 14. Go figure. ;)

Does anyone have experience with this tire?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/conti/co_chv90.htm

It's the only H rated summer tire I've been able to find in this size. Too bad
too, as I was hoping to fit a set of Bridgestone RE71s...

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
