spreading this paranoia!
There is no way in hell an E30 M20 owner can be asking around if his timing
belt is broken. If it was, he would be the first to know.

Subject: [uuc] E36 Alignment specs needed

It's time for my 94 325 to get an alignment, but I'm not sure if I have the
right specs. Car is currently running a 95 M3 suspension with 97 M3 strut
mounts swapped left to right for additonal negative camber. These are the
numbers I had planned on using:

Front toe: zero - 1/16" in, total (0.00 - 0.12 degree)

Rear camber: 0.8 - 1.0 degree negative, per side

Rear toe: 1/16" - 1/8" in, total (0.12 - 0.24 degree)

But are they still correct with the front camber change?

Thanks,

Alex, it is possible for a belt's teeth to be shearing off, but the belt
itself not to have broken. The engine would operate just fine (for a while)
with a few missing timing belt teeth, as many teeth are enaged to each of the
three toothed pulleys at any one time. It's not always an all or nothing
situation. However, it seems fairly obvious that the belt may indeed be due
for replacement, and I would strongly suggest not driving the car until the
engine has been properly inspected to verify what exactly the problem is, and
repaired if necessary.

Subject: [uuc] E36 doesn't run after the car wash

Hello everyone. I'm guessing this has been asked (and answered) before. I
searched the Technical Assistance page without luck. Honest. :)

So, here I am.

My E36 325ia doesn't run after the car wash. It died within a minute or
two of pulling out of the bay, with the transmission error light on. After
25 minutes or so, the car started and ran fine. This doesn't happen if I
hand wash it -or drive in the rain.

I seem to remember hearing about the ECU getting wet. Is this what's
happening due to the high water pressure experienced in the automatic
washes?

I know, I know. "Well, Owen, why then don't you just hand wash it, like it
deserves -and avoid the issue?" And I would, if I didn't live in the
Northeast -and it's winter. :)

Any advise on how to solve this problem would be appreciated. The car is
getting awfully dirty.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Fuel Line Leak. Atlanta Area Mechanic?

I helped my girlfriend move to Atlanta this weekend. Pleasant weather made for a nice
drive, even in the trashy U-Haul with 70 mph axle hop/tramp mode.

A little before the move, the 1988 325 iS had been leaking gas from around the filter
area and I had replaced all the lines that had hose clamps on both ends both in the
engine compartment and in the filter area. Also, I used the BMW clamps that are
presumable thinner than the standard NAPA/Murray's ones and clamp 'into' the rubber
hose better. There are some hoses with the crimped clamps and I did not replace
those. Perhaps that is where the problem is.

Monday morning, I found a puddle of fuel on the ground right under the car. Seemed to
have sprayed under pressure from the wetting under the car so I'm guessing it is not
the tank leaking, but the pressurised post-pump section. Could not tell where since
about 100-200 cc of fuel had drenched the subframe, filter and tank in that area.
Making sure there was no fuel near the cat and removing the filter cover to allow air
to evaporate the fuel off, I started the car and found no fuel spraying out. Two
miles later, there was no smell and no spray and everything was dry. My girlfriend
drove the car to and from work - about 5 miles - and still no smell and no spray. All
clamps appear to be tight.

Needless to say, I would like to get the car to a mechanic ASAP to have it seen to.
Any recommendations in the Atlanta area would be welcome. My GF lives around the
Lindbergh stop on MARTA on Briarcliff and LaVista and the closer the better.
Preferably someone who will deal pleasantly with a mechanically fairly understanding,
but uninterested individual!

Thanks.

Don't try it in Arkansas. A wildlife officer has as much authority as an
Arkansas State Trooper. Go through the same identical training.

Wow. This is a surprise.

I installed ATE Powerslots on my 84 325E weekend street/L-Stock race car and
after about 5,000 miles (in 18 months) of spirited street driving and 8 track
days, they are doing great. Cheap too. About $45.00 ea. for an E30.

OK... How do those sheared off teeth make it outside the timing cover
and land in the engine compartment? The original post asked,
paraphrasing, "Hey, what are these rubber bits in my engine
compartment?"

Have you ever looked at your engine?

I have had excellent results with the ATE Powerdisk. They are the
elipticaly slotted rotors in the 'star' pattern. I had them on my Dinan
modified 528e and they were the only rotors that sttod up to mt abuse
without warping. I had big problems with warped rotors until I switched to
them.

I also have them on my 750iL. So far, so good

Subject: [uuc] Re: Isopropyl vs. Methyl Alcohol

Do not use methyl alcohol, it is very nasty stuff and can damage the fuel
system. Read the owner's manual - they generally state you can use fuel
with up to 15% ethyl alcohol, but less than 5% methyl alcohol. Methyl
alcohol is corrosive (CART engines run on methanol, and they have to flush
them with gasoline between races or they get destroyed) and attacks most
elastomers. I don't think isopropyl has any of these problems.

I hope Rob & the monitors will forgive me for posting this as it
borders on an <admin> issue.

The listserv convention for posting something like this--sporting
event result or the end of a movie, book, etc, would be to include
the word "spoiler" in the subject line and state what you're doing in
the first sentence of the body text. That gives anybody who doesn't
want to read the information ample warning to move on to the next
message.

For example:

Subject: *SPOILER* South Pole F1 Results

Below I'm posting the results of the Penguin Trophy Grand Prix. If
you don't want to know who won please move on to the next message.

(Then put a little extra white space before you post the results so
the eye doesn't skip ahead on its own.)

This way folks who would like to read (and discuss) the results can
do so, those who don't want to can use their <DEL> key and everyone
will be happy.

Of course should the list administrators rule that material of this
nature is not appropriate to our list then their wishes should (will)
be observed.

Hi all-

I know a few of the DME units can be interchanged. However, I have a
question about one we are working on. A 525/325 has different part numbers
for a car with an automatic transmission and manual. Is there any reason
for this and can I just pop an auto computer in a manual car?

No sign of warpage yet, and they are no where near worn to the bottom of

When building your own engine, make sure you check everything yourself.
Piston to head clearance should be about 1 mm (0.040 inch) to prevent
contact. Too much clearance impairs combustion by reducing turbulence.

I see no reason why you can't run 10:1 compression with premium fuel and
careful spark and fuel programming.
