I should say so! Mike Morris of Schneller BMW (<http://www.machschnell.com/>) got one into an E30 325is. You can see pictures of it on his web site. Awesome car. I have been out on the track in it. The bonded extruded aluminum chassis is about 180 lb. > There's about 1250 lb of running gear and interior bits bolted > to that chassis and body. I think I've seen that show. The dry weight of the original Elise (no petrol, no driver) is 690 kg. At 2.2 lb to the kg, that makes 1520 lb, near enough. The engine, a Rover 1.8 K-series, is all-alloy, as are the gearbox casing and suspension components, wheels and so on. The problem is, it's not a car suited to all conditions. So spoilt types have been demanding air-con, radio, power windows, power steering, electrical this and that, all of which ruin the optimal power:weight ratio. Then they complain about the lack of go. I pity Lotus having to erode the weight advantage in order just to shift cars; it must be a wearisome task for the engineers, which begs the question: why bother? While I welcome Colin Chapman's approach to performance enhancement ("just add lightness") I can see why manufacturers - until now, at least - have ignored innovative design and progress in material usage (Golf Mk III, anyone?) and just shoehorned in bigger, more poweful engines. This way you can keep bolting on electrical goodies, and it makes less of a difference. Give me a late, 1,800 cc Mk I Golf GTi and I'll have another crack at that downhill hairpin at Bathurst... The changer when it gets old will get jammed by the magazine. It won't recoginze any cd inserted and sometimes try to load a second cd into the same slot. Sometimes won't play any cd even when its loaded into the laser slot.... I sent mine back thru BMW dealer $140 and it came back in 5 weeks all cleaned/fixed/ with new hardware and working fine now. BMW dealers send the changer back thru BMW parts to Alpine repair in N.J. for repairs.
