Subject: [uuc] Re: F1 naming conventions (BMW/Williams or Williams/BMW)

There are no hard and fast rules (and even when there are, they're
often times loosely applied), but one word generally explains this:
context. It all depends on the source and the intended audience.

In the context of the marketing pitch for the general public, the
primary sponsor is of course granted the most prominent position,
hence all the PR, websites, team hats, shirts and other paraphernalia
will prominently feature BMW.

In the context of the FIA, Williams are still the constructors, and
BMW is still the engine supplier, so you're more likely to see
Williams listed first in documents issued from officialdom, like
official results and such.

The FIA is quite strict with regard to the chassis/constructor rules.
I vaguely recall Larousse/Lola being penalized years ago for
violating these rules.

OTOH, there is a lot more leeway with regard to engines, hence
Mercedes (Ilmor), Petronas (Ferrari), Playlife/Supertec (Renault),
Jaguar/Ford (Cosworth) and Mugen (Honda) engines.

The names of the entrants is similar, hence BMW WilliamsF1, West
McLaren Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, etc. BAR has some
ludicrously long name incorporating all of the sponsors.

The average joe/casual fan won't know or care what any of it means
and will just digest whatever the marketing folks feed to them
(taken to extremes, you get Nascar). Diehards will look for a
clearer interpretation.

Alex:

Each of the failed displays that you mention is backlight with standard
automotive dash lightbulbs. (total of 4 in this case). They are easily
replaced once the instrument cluster is removed. On an E34, this generally
requires removing the steering wheel. Not difficult, but needs to be done
with very specific procedure given the presence of the airbag. If you are not
an experienced DIYer, take to the dealer, they do this type of repair all the
time.

I belive that the feature in discussion here is ALR - Automatic Locking
Restraint. it's the function that locks the ratcheting reel in the retractor
when you pull the seatbelt all the way out, which then allows you to use the
belt to lock in a child seat. it is/was standard on all non-driver seating
positions in US market vehicles. (I say 'was" because it may have been
eliminated for front passenger seats due to airbag concerns with childseats.

the theory is that you get a RHD passenger (left hand side) belt assembly as a
substitute for a dedicated harness set-up.

actually in AutoCar (22 March) they note "Audi says the 895kg A2 comes in 150kg
below what it would be built in conventional steels." The A2 is an alloy
spaceframe with non-structural hung-on alloy panels.

Yes weird, my car always took 7 quarts with a new filter and I added 1
quart over for fun days at SIR/Bremerton. Bentley must be on crack to say
6. Maybe you got lucky and someone installed a competition oil pan in that
bad boy.

Brett,

Here here!!!

I could not agree more.... I also run a shop, and if someone questioned those
prices on that type of car....c'ya!!! The labor rate is 70% of what it should
be and the parts are very fair....Knowing, or at least thinking that J. Chyo is
in California, there is no way that anyone on the west coast could get this
work done from a reputable shop for those prices. NO WAY!!! How could any of
you question these prices??? For those of you without the "M" versions of these
great cars, you could probably understand these prices. For those of you with
the "M" versions, this should seem way too cheap.

Be very careful doing this sort of thing....when you do appear in court, the
perpetrator has the opportunity to find out who you are, and then all sorts of
fun things could potentially happen. If someone has actually made you crash,
or run you off the road, or pulled a gun on you, then maybe...but if it's just
a little road rage that you are having, get over it. Is it really worth
multiple flat tires, or your siblings being threatened, or your car being
keyed???? Only you can be the judge....

the most extreme case of this is the new Caterham R500.

specs are :

1.8l four cyl
230bhp at 8600 rpm
155lb ft at 7200rpm
11.5:1 compression

6 speed trans / 3.62 final drive / 6th is 1.00 / max speed 145mph

0-30mph - 1.6 sec (0.2 faster than McLaren F1 road car)
0-60 - 3.4 sec (0.2 slower than F1)
0-100 - 8.1 sec
quarter mile - 11.9 sec @ 117mph

30-70 thru the gears - 2.6 sec
60-100 (in 4th) - 5.0 sec
70-90 (in 4th) - 2.3 sec (same as McLaren F1)

32,200 ($52,486) fully built, on the road

curb weight - 450kg (990 lbs)
511bhp/ton

you could very likely have one of these here in the states for less than
$50k as you could buy the rolling chassis & put the engine in yourself &
would avoid some of the UK taxes.

There is a design feature of BMW wheels that helps to keep the bead
seated in case of a flat. You have to break the bead at 2 points 180
degrees apart. If you don't understand that and know where those points
are, then yes, its hard. Otherwise, its like any other wheel. They
should read the factory service literature once in a while.
