Rob:

I've done several subframe bushings and looked at the E30 trailing arm bushings. The
tool to replace them on the car is like a common c-clamp with a hollow cylinder on the
stationary end instead of the flat clamping surface. You remove the trailing arm
bolt, move the trailing arm up and away from the bolting flanges and then press out
the bushing.

I am thinking of building the tool to do this on an E30 (not E36) so I have not
actually tried to move anything. On the tool front I was thinking of using a normal
c-clamp of the proper size in conjuction with a cylinder to press the bushing out.

Not having seen the E36, I cannot comment. Hope my E30 observations help.

Perhaps one's thoughts should also include:

Do they help ME see better?
Do I want to see better at night than with standard lights?

While I respect your wish to be stealthy, I'd feel damned
stupid running into or over something on some dark road
that I might have been able to avoid with better lighting.
Weigh those options, too.

Of course, I drive an E30 with standard Wal-Mart sealed
halogens, so I am jealous of anyone who can afford better.
:) Or for that matter, anyone with a job right now.

Hello BMW Experts! This wisdom was written:

>In regard to purchasing you own parts and asking
      >your mechanic to install them...

      >the last time showed up at a diner carrying a carton of
      >eggs and asked them to
      >cook them for me , they declined.

Last time I brought a bottle of wine to a restuarant, I was charged a
"corking fee", of an insignificant amount. I have never asked a
garage to shop for my parts. And they always mount the tires which I
      buy elsewhere. Murf

Hi David, had the same problem on a '95 325i. It turned out to be a worn
control arm bushing on the driver's side, which would cause shuddering on
high speed left curves. Good luck. -Rich

Howdy,

First, thanks to everyone for advice on buying an E36. My wife and I picked
up our '92 325i 4dr 5speed last night. As luck would have it, the car
started exhibiting symptoms that it didn't do on the test drive.

While driving along the freeway, as the road curved to the left, the car
would shudder very bad, not just a small jiggle, but a pretty heafty shake.
If we were going straight, or to the right everything was smooth. What was
weird, was that it did it about 4 or 5 times (for about the first 5 miles or
so) and then stopped. We made it all the way home without any problems
after the first 5 miles (about 30 more miles).

I'm going to try and take a look at it tomorrow. If anybody has any ideas
as to what to look for I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

That's strange logic. You might as well have bought a Honda Accord, no?

Hey, if you go to Bellingham, you can visit Dale Bozzio. She lives

No. At least BPG in Boston sells ITG. FYI :)

Hey, sorry for the WOB, but a friend just received an offer from Intel and
now needs a place to live near Boston. We are going to take a road trip in
about a month to look for an apartment for him, probably not going to take my
525i on the trip (OBMWC). Anyone have any recommendations on nice areas to
look?? Also, any must stop at places for when we are up there?? Thanks for
the help and sorry for the WOB.

I have brought my own eggs to both Palo Alto Independent and now German
Motor Specialist in the SF Bay Area and have not had any kind of issues
except for the understanding that if any of the parts fail prematurely,
I will have to pay the labour to have them replaced.

And, I'm talking a lot of parts - Upper and lower control arms, tie rod
ends, idler arm, front and rear Bilsteins, load level elimination parts,
brake pads, A/C compressor. I've saved myself quite a few dollars by
buying from Eurasian or La Jolla Independent/Carl Nelson. These shops
charge me a labour rate of between $75-$85 /hour wether I bring my own
parts or not.

If you can find a good shop who will accomodate you, you will be better
off. However, if you live in a part of the country where you are not
spoilt for choice, you will have to accept the terms of the shop you go
to which may be less than favourable.

Ok,

What about if it's a city cop from the town across the river? I'm from
Alexandria, La, and I go across the river to Pineville a lot. Sometimes, I
see bikes from Alexandria and I wonder what would happen if I just passed
them up. I'm afraid I'll probably get pulled over b/c there's possibly some
law about that.

Any thoughts?

The Xenon lights on my '00 M5 are great for increasing my visibility,
but I agree that they can attract too much attention. No cops yet for
me, but I now get routinely flashed by irate folks driving by me who
think I have my brights on. Kennie

Subject: [uuc] NE Ohio - Local Tire Installer (Cross Posted)

All this discussion about mounting tires and avoiding tire damage is begging
me to ask.

Does anyone have experience with a tire installer in NE Ohio which will
mount and balance (two 235/40/17 tires) on 17" x 7.5" BMW M3 double spoke
aluminum rims without damage.

I know of some Tire Rack recommended installers:

Galadis Foreign Car Service - North Olmstead
        Autobahn Service - Akron
Fritz Tire & Brake - Canton

As well as one recommended by Hunter for having GSP 9700 equipment:

        Lexus of Akron/Canton - Akron

Although I have never dealt with any of these before. It seems a
word-of-mouth recommendation is the best advise. Therefore, any experience
with those mentioned above or any other suggestions by local digesters.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Rich

Subject: [uuc] <E46> Friend with 323i Questions

Hi everyone, my friend Jay in Boston is considering buying a 323i. It
would be his first BMW. He is on a budget, so the 328i is out of the
question, and he does not want to load up the car with options. He has
two specific questions:

1. Is the HK premium stereo option worth having? I know there have
been lots of cases of improper installation of aftermarket sound systems
in new BMWs, so if he goes aftermarket, he should definitely have the
job done by someone who knows the E46 electrical system. Does anyone
in the Boston area know of a dealer that has an E46 with the HK
system? I could direct him to that dealer for a sound system demo.

2. He's contemplating the automatic transmission with the nifty
clutchless shift-it-yourself feature. What is the skinny on these
boxes? Are they durable? Should he just save his money and get a
manual? He does know how to shift gears. I don't know the nature of
his commute, but I asked him if he really NEEDS the automatic. Answer
pending.

Finally, in general is there anything Jay should know about these cars
before he signs on the dotted line?

TIA for any advice,

Can someone say E30 upgrade? Go to www.zionsvilleautosport.com and look
at their twin cam upgrade. I think that many of the suspension parts
from a Z3/Mcoupe/Mroadster will fit on an E30, and the engine,
transmission and differential can be fitted too. Man talk about a
