HI all,
I just wonder where is a good place to mail/web order say a Racing Dynamix/AC Schnizer
Upper Strut Brace (the bar between the suspension fixing in the engine compartment)?
Will I be able to install that myself?
Thanks

Hello all,

I have a friend looking for a replacement transmission for an E34 M5 -
he has tried Dinan, Turner, Zionsville, and Vines, plus a couple other
west coast sources. Other than the dealer ($4100) he seems to be SOL. No
idea what is wrong with the original, I just told him I would ask. Any
ideas? Thanks!

Subject: [uuc] parts needed for various projects

I'm about to install my used E30 M3 springs. Haven't
decided on Bilstein HDs or Sports but I believe both
fit fine. I will be installing rear convertible shock
mounts.Current ones are shot(squeak,and i can see
movement when bouncing car up and down) Does any one
know the part numbers to anything else I may need. New
spring pads, dust covers?

I recently installed new 17" wheels and tires. The
offset was ET30 on OZ competition wheels.(27lbs each
wheel YIKES!! but same price as Kosei 15" so I
couldn't resist)The front seem to be really cutting it
close to the strut. I have like 5mm of clearance,
should I be concerned?

When I had car jacked up to do the wheels, I noticed
the front had a lot of play. I'm assuming steering tie
rods, cause if my bearing had that much play I'm sure
my car would have shakin to death by now. I don't get
whirling bearing sound.

However since i'm going to be doing the shocks, i'm
considering replacing the control arm or pressing in
new ball joints. Are there any reasons why I may not
want to just press in new joints? These control arms
don't look like the get bent often. I've considered
the alloy ones but $$.

I know my control arm bushings are definitely dried
and cracked. So I will be needing to do those too.

ABS light comes on when i start driving. Possibly
corroded gear on bearings, so I was thinking of doing
those too.

Now, giving all that needs to be done sometime in the
future, should I tackle them all at once? Which part
replacement are not defendant on others?

Thanks for you patience

I would bet it's probably oil from beef fat (tallow) or some form of fish
oil... nothing nefarious, no bizarre, endangered, or ex-pet animals get
used. I'd bet your M3 that it's not bald eagle oil, Fluffy the cat* oil,
dolphin oil, or jackalope oil.

* everybody knows cat oil is good for CV joints and would be a waste on a
K&N (which is a waste itself).

For the early EDC-equipped cars only, BMW has released the distribution
rights to Boge. Any Boge dealer (like ShockWarehouse, do a 'net search)
should be able to get them cheaper.

It's the suckers like me with newer EDC-equipped cars that have to face a
$1,000+ dealer price for each front unit and something like $700 for each
rear... now I know where the "owner loyalty rebate" funds come from!

Come on BMW, sell that stuff at reasonable prices so we can follow the
instructions on the orange label that say "keep your BMW all BMW with
genuine BMW parts"!

Whoa, whoa... Let's re-think what you're saying here.

Beating up a dealer on the price until he bleeds or beating up a tech on a
repair is just plain dumb because these people have the ability, if they
choose, to screw you real hard.

Shopping around for food *is* smart and will save you more money in the
short, medium, and long run. I don't know about you, but my monthly food
bill is greater than a car payment. I can easily chop 20% or more off by
clipping coupons, buying house brands of parity items, or cooking for
myself.

I *cannot* build my own car (although those damn kit car ads make it seem
easy) but I can fix a meal. Being a tech is often a dirty, exhausting,
frustrating, and thankless job that is spent standing on concrete floors
with noxious fumes and cold or hot air while clueless customers bitch about
parts costs.

I was watching a story on Dateline one time, I don't remember what it was
about, spoiled kids or something..... Anyway there was this one family they
included in the story; they showed the kids playing in the living room with
the husband (the third spoiled kid?) and off to the side on a nice little
ceramic tiled area was, yep, a Ducati. Dunno the model, not a 916, a smaller
one without all the fairings. Guy must have a very understanding wife,
unless she's an enthusiast herself. Hell, mebbe it's her bike. I thought it
looked pretty *kewl* tho. Then there's the film "The Juror" where Alec
Baldwin has his 850CSi parked inside his place. Personally, I wouldn't mind
living in a decked out loft with a garage door into the living area and a
white tiled area to park a nice alpinweiss E-30 M3, or maybe a black M6,
some track lighting to highlight it....... It's nice to dream...

A client of my local dealer wants to put my X5 in a
music video (r&b) along with a Range Rover. They're
paying me quite a large sum for the privelage too. At
least that was until I just decided last night that
I'd rather not let anyone touch my vehicle. They'll
just have to abuse someone else's.
They wanted it for 3 days where it was supposed to be
parked next to the RR. Although they claim it wouldn't
be driven, I'm sure someone would enjoy it at night
when not in the scenes.

A feature that often gets played with when the car is new and then forgotten
about, seems to be the feeling from many owners. I would often use an autos'
manual override to downshift before corners, as one should, so if he's an
enthusiast maybe there's some mileage in it. But if he's an enthusiast, see
below...

> What is the skinny on these boxes?

GM-made for the US market, and therefore durable (going on past
performance). Even though they have five speeds they do sap a fair bit of
grunt, in the traditional slushbox fashion.

> [Should he] save his money and get a manual?

If there is no particular need to buy the auto, or he simply can't decide,
then I would suggest buying the manual. Unless you can't drive stick and
don't want to learn, or have a physical restraint that stops you driving
manuals (laziness, in my case :)), or drive a lot in towns/hilly areas, buy
the manual. The autobox is a good one, but it is more expensive, heavier and
thirstier on fuel, and as food for thought, after playing with it for a
while your friend may end up wishing he's bought the stick.
