Subject: [uuc] 318ti's - info wanted

My gf is wanting to get rid of her current car ('97 VR6 GTI) before she puts too
many more miles on it and one of the cars that she has expressed interest in is
a 318ti.

She has had some service issues with the GTI and is skeptical about buying
another used car (tho not much new really appeals to her, but that's another
story), but I think I can convince her if I lay out the financial picture for
her & she can get a relatively low mileage '98 or '99.

part of my rationale for getting a used car is that she can offset the potential
cost of out of warranty repairs by setting aside a certain amount of money each
month to put into a maintenance fund. this money could then be raided as
appropriate for upgrades to the car. monthly out of pocket costs would be
similar to the low end of the new cars that she is interested in & the ti should
be lots more fun...

things I need to know :

any problem areas with '98 or '99 318ti's ??
As the model is pretty mature in terms of time in the market I would assume that
most of the bugs have been ironed out....

what are the advantages of the '99 over the '98 ??
I know the '99 was much lower production, had ///M steering wheel & a few other
unique items, what else ??

once the car is out of warranty, what sort of on-going upkeep costs are going to
be involved ??
what is an Inspection I or II going to run ??
how long should brake pads last with primarily highway/city driving ??
what sort of mileage do they return in mostly highway driving ??
any belts & such need regular changing (outside of what would be done on normal
inspection schedules) ??

any issues that will come up quickly with somewhat high usage ??
She drives ~25,00 miles a year.

Where is the 318ti digest ?? does it have archives ??

Good web sites for further information ??
(Other than Ron Sytgar's which may have everything you ever wanted - have not
looked into it too deeply.)

What should she expect to pay for a '98 or '99 with low (less than 20,000) miles
??

anyone know of a car for sale that fits these specs in the general midwest area
??
car must be :
black, silver or blue (maybe dark green if not tan interior)
black or gray interior (she dislikes tan generally)
manual trans only
sunroof - regular mandatory, California roof preferred

anyone have a nice 6 cyl conversion around that they want to get rid of ?? I
think Ben L sold the 332tii, but I recall someone else having a 328ti somewhere.

not sure I can talk her into one, but it might be fun...

Identified by those in the know as a Canadian '94 model. It may be worth
CDN$50k, as they're like hen's teeth in that part of the world, but bear in
mind they are quite cheap and plentiful in Europe. You could probably pick
up a very smart '94 or '95 for CDN$40k in Germany. I presume importation
wouldn't be a problem as the same car has already been sold there. I recall
that 286bhp M3s came with aluminium door and bonnet/hood skins, a la M3 LTW,
but were later replaced by regular steel when owners complained of the
fragility of the aluminium. Plus the fact that a 30kg weight saving (or
whatever it was) is of no benefit when you're sitting idling in traffic.

I'm pretty sure they it will. I have heard of transplanted E28 M5
drivetrain and suspensions on your chassis. Supposedly a bolt on.

Yes.

I'm sure there's a market. It's up to you to decide if the hassle factor is
higher or lower than the profit factor. You'll also need some spare space
to store and dismantle.

Sounds like its a bit of a basket case. Offer a lot lower than you think
he'll accept (like $250). Maybe he'll take it.

Hey Michael,

Isn't Phaedrus the shop that was building a 2002 using an E30 M3 chassis
(welding the road side of the M3 subframes to the chassis side of the
'02's)?

Does anyone know what ever happened to that car? I heard rumor that the
owner of the car had almost $50k into this project. I wonder what the real
figure is/was?

Just curious (George).

considering selling yours, please contact me. Since I Iive in San Diego,
I'd prefer finding one in the western US.

Duh, meaning that it's actually not stolen and not messed around with like
the last one I almost bought. :)

Problem I have now is that I'm deciding between a silver 99 M3, black 98 M3
Conv, and a green 97 ERT supercharged M3 (360 HP!) - all in the same general
price range.

Any one have suggestions? :) I have a convertible now so it'll be a leap of
faith for me to jump back into a hardtop, but then again, performance is
better...so it's a tradeoff I guess.

Never mind :).

OK, I'm just getting the 4-pot ragging out of the way. Lots of people,
seemingly oblivious to historical facts, don't think they're "real" BMWs. I
used to have one of these and I thought it was a lovely motor. Fine when it
got going, although the autobox was sluggish. It seems to be programmed to
change up just as the engine starts producing some meaningful thrust,
regardless of where the throttle is. And the motor (dubbed M42 in BMW
engine-speak) certainly needs stoking.

Performance? With auto and aircon it's a heavy car, so don't expect lots of
grunt. Unrestricted it will go over 130 mph but you need a chip for that.
Gasket problems apart, the motor is strong and mild tweaking of the engine
management system will allow it to produce good power well up in the rev
range. However the auto, unless you stick in Sport/'3' and maintain a heavy
right foot, will do its best to prevent you getting there, which is perhaps
the worst point about the car. Finally you may notice a flat spot just
before 4,500 rpm caused by the change in intake tract length. Some cars are
badly afflicted by this, some less so, and apparently it's normal.

Mechanical problems with the car tend to be those affecting E36s in general
- - the rear shock absorber mounts are perhaps the most common culprits, the
rubber splitting every two or three years depending on how hard you use the
car. I've heard reports that the paint can be a bit soft, and US-spec
headlight covers are prone to pitting and clouding over. There are lots of
other bits and pieces you will need to know to anticipate problems; you
could start here and fish around:
http://www.eskimo.com/~dalus/bmw/bmw_e36.html.

It's just occurred to me that I've never seen a E36 with any rust on it,
despite some of the oldest ones now approaching 10 years of age. So I don't
think you've got any problems to worry about there.

Hope this helps.

For the baddest lookin' strut brace (and that's the REAL reason 95% of ya
put 'em on) look at the UUC Motorwerks "Strut Barbarian" at
http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/

When you go to install these strut braces, DO NOT ream out any holes if
alignment is off and the bolts will not seat. simply jack up the front of
the car and once the front suspension is unloaded the bolts will slip right
in.

Ahmad - I hope you kept some documentation of all of this, and
pass it on to the District Attorney in the city this guy lives
in..

If he didn't do the deed (modifying VIN's) - it's fairly certain
that he knows who did - and this is the same sort of slime who
will steal YOUR M3 or my M-Coupe.

Be nice to see someone like this explain the VIN's to the police
when you have BMW-AG backing up the story..
