[uuc] [uuc] Is autocrossing dangerous? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 03:03:34 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] <E30> Brake light warning won't go off The brake light "check" indicator in the little cluster above the rearview mirror stays on all the time now. It used to be an intermittent problem, sometimes coming on after I'd been driving for a while, but it's gotten progressively worse. My mechanic said that mismatched bulbs in the taillights can cause this, but he looked at them and thought they seemed ok. It seems the problem has to do with the switch that contacts the brake pedal. The brake lights used to stay on after I let my foot off the brake, and I had to hook my foot under the pedal and give it a little pull toward me to make them go off. To fix this, I taped a dime to the pedal where it contacts the switch and after that both the brake lights and the "check" light only came on when they were supposed to. Eventually, the dime would fall off and the problem would return. I finally glued it to the pedal, but the "check" light started acting up again afterwards. Has anyone else had a problem like this, and if so, have you discovered a longer-term remedy? Direct email responses are preferred, so I'm sure not to miss it in the many digest posts. Duane writes..... "Randy, Why not simply pay the ticket and be done with it? Will cost you 1/4 what the lawyer will charge you." "That one should cost you about $ 100.00 and you'll be done with it." "Your state may not even pick up on the VA ticket, depending on where you live. If Virginia doesn't have a reciprocal agreement with your state, your insurance company will never hear of it." I took this route about 12 years ago and it worked....and I'm in a neighboring state to Va. Of course, if your state does have an agreement with Va. it could cost you over $1,000.00 in insurance increases over the next three years. In that case, the $300.00 lawyer doesn't look so bad. Jim: The temperature does change pretty quickly in places. I'm not sure how these things are done, but perhaps the measurement was taken close to the intake or something and the run was in an enclosure of sorts, making for local fluctuations being greater than those expected in the 'open'. I'm not sure what the temperature drops mean for power, but we've found that pass-by noise drops 1 dBA for every 14 deg rise in temperature and pass-by noise is almost directly linked to the power an engine is making. Im in the left lane (mistake #1), cruising at a "certain" speed that may have been above 55pmh (mistake #2), with no one in front of me (mistake #3). I knew all these risks while I was driving, but hey, I was in a hurry, I gambled and lost. It happens. What happened? I didnt do a thorough visual scan of all cars that I was approaching, and ended up approaching an umarked Crown Vic cruising in the next to left lane. Tried to brake before I got to him..ended up RIGHT beside him. I guess he knew I was "going faster than him" by the way my front headlights were scraping the ground, and my rear bumper being about 10 feet in the air, all due to me slamming on the brakes at the last minute! (Ok, Im exaggerating a bit) At this point, I needed to pull over to the far right lane to exit to 495..so I ease in front of him, pull over into his lane, and of course, he pulls me over. He asks that age old question: "Do you know how fast you were going"? I of course wanted to 1st shine MY flashlight into his face, and reply "Hey wait a minute..arent YOU the one who gets paid to figure that out? Wheres your LIDAR/RADAR/VASCAR, Andy?". But I didnt feel like being shot 42 times, so instead, I calmly remembered the UUC digest advice of "be honest, be polite, dont BS them, and they will let you go". I replied "Officer, I realize I was exceeding the limit a bit, and I apologize. I was in a hurry, and needed to make the exit. I'll be certain to slow it down now." His followup was "Ok, but how fast were you going"? I replied: "I wasnt looking at the speedo the second you pulled me over, but I believe around 65mph". His reply: "You approached me at a speed of at least 80mph. Give me your license and registration, and pull your window halfway up". He then pulls out his trusty window tint-o-meter, and checks my side windows, which apparently were too dark for Virginia standards, even though Im licensed and registered in Maryland, and I meet Maryland standards. (I think). He comes back to the car, gives me a citation for illegal level of tint per Va statuates, and a "failure to obey highway sign-55mph limit" for my perceived moving violation. These are my first VA citations in probably 5 years. Just settled my first MD citation with a probation before judgement ruling. Issues. THe window tint citation is just a fine...another state cant make you take it off like your own state can. I still find it ridiculous that 3 jurisdictions so close to each other (MD, DC, VA) all have differing laws on tint. Most states have tint laws for cars to protect officers at night...so they can see into the vehicles. Fine, but then why are SUV and trucks exempt from these laws?? Whatever...I guess Ill simply pay that one. On the moving citation, did I ruin myself by being honest? I presume I should simply ask for a continuance or two, so that the conviction will be pushed out past my MD probation is up for the MD citation? (MD MVA says yes, Va tickets do count as points on the MD license). Oh well, live and learn. Ron Browne Bowie, MD __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You'll have the National Capital Chapter president (Rich Beebe) and vice president (Mike Wendell) running, me (da Geeeze), and some of the other Bubbas; Mike Fennell and Matt Yip. We'll be in a bunch of different classes so the chances of seeing one of us in a race is high. This will be taking place at Summit Point Saturday and Sunday (April 29 and 30) with the majority of races on Sunday but Mike Wendell's race on Saturday evening (I believe). You can cruise back to the paddock and check us out. We'll be the silver canopy "city" with large BMW flags flying high. If you come out we do accept offerings of food and non-alcoholic beverage. Please note that we may be especially busy fixing up bugs in this first race of the season. Bring your (paying) friends and support the SCCA! We guarantee a show.
