No. Except for possibly driving to the event. I'm just starting by fourth year of serious autocrossing (10-14 events per year). The worst injury I have seen was when a friend was stung by a bee. The only damage I have seen was when an RX-7 lost a rear wheel due to each driver (a two-driver car) thinking the other had torqued the wheels. I take that back--we did have a young kid roll an econobox, but he was driving stupid, had been warned about his driving and continued to be an idiot. He didn't even care. It was a $500 car with a stock suspension and sticky tires. Bad combination--soft suspension, competition tires, and no brains. Really, it is safer, IMO, than most freeways at rush hour. It *is* hard on tires, especially when you are new and most likely over-driving the car. I still over-drive too often. There is no way I'd risk my M3 if there was a significant chance of so much as scratching it. The cone marks *do* come off. Once you decide to buy extra wheels, tires, shocks, etc., it is only dangerous to your VISA bill. Trust me on that. LOL (Rob, he don' know me very well.. do he ;) This has been available for WELL over a year and when I got tired of emailing personal copies, I put it on my website: http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com/dynocharts/intake/KN/kntest.pdf These are the ACTUAL TEST SHEETS from an ACTUAL FILTER LAB showing exactly what was up.. not my interpretations, but SCIENCE. Testing done in an independent lab, by professionals, with no one trying to "get a conclusion" out of them. Testing, that had we the BMW community had to pay for, would have cost BEAUCOUP bucks! (Luckily someone who works there is an all around nice guy and BMW nut and got the lab guys to agree to a test as a "favor") They show the passage of more dirt into the motor, and eventually flow WORSE than paper filters.. I think that's simple enough. Jim PS: Swimming in a reactor spent-fuel-rod pond shows no immediate "adverse reaction" either.. it takes a while. With that lovely 272hp V12, you could have throttle-induced oversteer. I don't think that's what they had in mind and it's hard to explain on a tech sheet. No 4-wheel steering on the 850CSi. As far as I know, the only cars with actual 4WS systems were the Honda Prelude and Mazda 626, both late '80s options that were expensive and flaky. Other cars have had passive systems where the rear axle would flex in odd ways to help steering response (Nissan's HICAS, Mazda's 2nd-gen RX-7, and Audi's Weissach axle in the 5000S and 100/200). - - Rob - ----- Original Message ----- From: Steven Reed <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] 850CSi - 4 wheel steering?! > I came upon a messageboard post that mentioned the 850CSi having > 4-wheel-steering. As always, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that the E34 has many of the same systems and fixes as the E28. The bad news is that the E34 has many of the same systems and fixes as the E28. Hmm. So, the engine still has the opportunity to have the cam oiler banjo bolts go loose, they leak oil from the same oil sender, rear tranny seal and shifter seal, they have the same control arm bushing challenge, and the same 'tender' driveline. On the other hand, the engines should still go 200K+, the above list of annoyances are cheap and easy to fix, and both of the cars are a hoot to drive! The amenities of the E34 were welcome to my aging bod, especially the lower noise level at cruise. They feel very different to drive. The feedback is less in the E34: engine, tranny, exhaust. You have to tune your ears a little better for the song of the car. You can fit 255 rubber under the rear of the E34 ;~). So it really comes down to picking a specimen that has been cared for to your standards, at a concomitant price, and go from there!
