Compliance. I used to own a 1990 Prelude with the 4WS option. I had to choose between that or ABS (options that couldn't be added together on the same car) and I figured I really don't need ABS. The 4WS system on the prelude is mechanical. It turns 2 degrees in the same direction of steering, then 5 degrees in the opposite direction as you turn the steering wheel more in the same direction. You can see it work when the car is parked and you turn the steering wheel. It was actually pretty cool in parking lots because it felt like the back end is sliding out as you pulled into a parking space. It took a while to get used to when parallel parking but once you get used to it, you can squeeze into some tight spots. On the highway, it was amazing how quickly it changes lanes. I know that the 3000GT and 300ZX both had electronic 4WS but I don't remember much about them. - -Bobby '98 M3 throttle and EB induced 4WS :) - ----- Original Message ----- > I think I read this more than 11 years ago (when I was about 14 or so) so I can't be sure, but the Honda Prelude 4WS had two modes/phases - contra-phase and same-phase. > > The contra-phase involved the rear wheels and front wheels turning in opposite directions to reduce turning circles. You can usually find a seller of used M3 suspension components on this list and on bimmer.org. For power, I would recommend a JC chip first. You'll be suprised how fast a 328 is. My friend has a 325i with a few mods (chip and exhaust, 18" wheels, Eibach springs) and I have a hard time pulling away from him on the freeways. You can get a 3.45 diff (which seems to be the hot ticket for M3's) for more pickup. It won't wear out your clutch but you'll be revving higher at highway speeds, thus burning more gas. Hope this helps. - -Bobby '98 M3/2 JC Chip, JC Intake, SS exhaust, BL/SS, 18" AC Schnitzer Type III, Eibachs, Bilsteins, UUC strut bar, Kmac's and a few other stuff :) http://rchay.home.mindspring.com/m3.htm - ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Hart" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, April 01, 2000 6:45 PM Subject: [uuc] M3 convert > I admit to being uninformed relative to all the M3owners out there. > I just tested my 3rd M3 convertible, and I am wondering...what is it > that makes the suspension so tight..there has to be more to it than 17 > inch wheels...moreover, I was thinking of puting a 3.23 diff in my 328i > to compensate for my cars lack of off the line kick. Sorry for the cross post but I am looking for some garage heater recommendations. We are adding an addition to our 65 year old house in Madison Wisconsin which includes adding a 2 car garage. The house has a lower exposure so the garage will be at basement level with a family room over it. My wife gave me a Blue Flame non-vented natural gas garage heater. I will only be using it when I need to work on the cars in the winter, not to keep the garage at a constant temperature. I started to read the instructions and it is full of warnings. My questions are: is this thing safe to use? If there a better product for what I want? Any recommendations? We are replacing the furnace so I could have it installed in the new garage but it takes up so much space compared to the heater my wife purchased which just hangs on the wall. Thanks in advance. Sure, the sport package also includes slightly larger anti-roll bars. But, given that the sport package really changes the handling behavior of the E46, this probably points to the very significant effect that shocks have. Imagine if BMW put in Bilsteins or Konis in the E46 sport package... Even the E36 M3 didn't get 'em. Imagine if you put 'em in your E46. Of course, while you're at it, may as well stick in Eibach or H&R or (gasp) Dinan springs, unless you really don't want ride harshness or want to stay in stock class in the auto-x. Of course, I could be a raging baboon. (You guys remember when not so long ago that was a popular disclaimer?) On the front doors, the rubber window guide that runs vertically near the front of the door had shrunk and left a good sized gap (3/8 inch or so). The gap was directly open to the outside so the effect was like driving with the window slightly open. I was able to take the interior panel off the door and move the rubber guide up so that there was no gap. I also put some silcone sealant on the back side of the guide to keep it from moving any more (it's 12 years old, I don't think it will shrink any more). The noise reduction was very noticeable and it only took 1/2 hour to fix. - --Brian F 88 535i ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 10:58:49 PDT From: "Porfirio Diaz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] WTB E36 M3 Springs Hi all, I want to buy a set of E36 M3 springs, from a 4 door model. The seals are: - - output shaft seals (just pop 'em out with a screwdriver) - - input shaft seal (remove big tight nut on input shaft, remove flange with a puller, then replace the seal) - - cover seal (you need to swap covers anyway...) - - speed sensor o-rings (just for good measure) I believe that the bearings are DIY replaceable. If anyone knows any differently, let them speak now or forever hold their peace. I'm just doing the seals & mounting bushing on the diff going into my car. I'm still waiting for the rubber to show up, though... For more information on this swap, see Mike Miller's excellent E30 diff swap article from European Car on my website. Well, I found an '88 M6. Now the only problem is figuring out how to get it to the SF Bay area from British Columbia... Combined with the '91 M5 project I adopted a few weeks ago, I'm out of garage and driveway space, resources, and spousal tolerance. :^) This car is so well set up, and runs so strong, I was seriously considering converting it into a Club racer, but the guy who is going to do cage work and the like kept telling me "it's too nice". So... sadly, the 635 CSi has to go. :( For Sale '88 635 CSi, 5 spd. =========================== This car has been well-cared for; its condition belies its age and mileage. I constantly get compliments on its great looks. Doesn't burn or leak oil, and I can tell you even those pesky M3s don't embarrass us performance-wise! :^) Cinnebar Red (license Red Six), tan leather interior. M6 trunk lid spoiler. Sony head unit with 10 CD changer and IR remote, amp and subwoofer. It'll rattle the house windows, if you want. :^) Complete Ground Control adjustable coil-over suspension, with Koni single-adjustables front and rear. Ground Control adjustable camber plates. Suspension Techniques adjustable sways. Strut tower brace. (Over $1500, total) Virtually all of the front suspension, control and thrust arms (new Dinan thrust arm bushings a week ago), tie rods, center link has been replaced in the last year. Complete brand new (not rebuilt) 540i/740i/750i front and rear calipers and rotors ($1500). Not only do we run with the M3s, we stop with them! :^) Fischer stainless steel brake lines all around ($175) New brake master cylinder last year. JC Chip (have stock chip as well). This car goes around corners like it's on those proverbial rails, and was used to capture 1st place in SFR SCCA Autocross Slush Series last year. Admittedly, the ride is harsher than stock, but with that long wheel base and mass, it's still more comfortable than some E36s I've ridden in. Shortcomings: - - A/C doesn't work. I bought it that way nearly 2 years ago, and since it's not been a priority, I never tried to figure out what's wrong. - - 205,xxx miles. Seems like a lot, but the Big Sixes are great motors, known for longevity. This one runs great and doesn't burn or leak oil. What can I say? I'm really at a loss as to asking price. Kelley says Retail $10,000 plus, but with the A/C not working and market realities, that's way more optimistic than I'd hope to be. I'll just throw out $8800. If you're in the least bit interested, let's talk; I don't get insulted.
