Fellows,
The M3 LTW in question is owned by Jack Tovey. He was running an
SCCA autocross event in Columbus, INDIANA when the accident occurred.
Fortunately nobody was hurt, unfortunately the car looks pretty bad. My
brother and my Dad both drove/worked this event. The course is set-up on an
old airport runway area and several people (including my Dad) have gone Agro
at speed while running the events in the past. Jack left the pavement at an
odd angle and the car dug in and rolled, no grassy knolls involved.
BTW there were numerous course changes after the crash occurred to try and
slow the course down.

I replace my filter this weekend and didn't have to break the filter. It
somehow fit in well without having to break the tabs.

Which is what lead me to believe that I removed the original
filter--it didn't even have the "breaking slots".

well, one other thing to consider...insurance. In my scenario (under 25 at
the time of purchase) that alone was enough to swing the scale way in the
direction of the 325. And now I have so many mods on it that I cringe at the
thought of letting it go for the M3/4 or 540/740/E34 M5 I want.

I can't help with specific Georgia information but if the car runs well and
there are no check engine codes, it should pass just fine. New plugs and
oil help the most. An old O2 sensor or dirty filters should be replaced,
also. I've found its much easier (here in Ohio) to first make sure
everything is right and pass the first time than to try and get an
exemption.

The tests are much more lenient than the federal requirements so you should
be OK. My old cars (not BMW) with no catalysts and no emission controls
emit less than the in service test limit for new cars.

Well, I found out on Saturday that that hose I waited almost two seeks
to get was not the problem after all on our '91 318is.
The biggest disappointment was not being able to use it yesterday, at
my first autocross in over a year (in Muncie, IN).
The radiator itself is leaking when under pressure. It is leaking around
the area where the black plastic is attached to the clear. I don't know
whether it is welded, or gasketed yet, but I'll tear into in soon to
find out. But, that leaves me with the unpleasant prospect of replacing
the unit. The job itself shouldn't be tough, but paying the 2 bills for
it will be.
That leads me to my questions....
The best price that I have found so far, is $200, from Vertex. Any
better prices to be found?
What on the planet of Hell is that little "screw" on the top of the
radiator? Neither of my others have it, and the Bentley book does not
mention it.
Thanks in advance...

When I called BMW NA on this sometime back, as to when they started to
replace with plastic impellers with metal ones I was told May '96. If you
are the original owner, you have the plastic impeller. If you are not the
original owner and can't be sure, I would suggest you plan to replace it. It
could cost you a radiator as well when it fail.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Emissions Testing

Neil,

Ha! For once, I get to answer _you_! You're ususally the one giving me the
advice.

I just got my car (1988 325is) emissions tested last week for the provincial
air quality program. The cars seem to be pretty good for emissions, provided
everything is working normally. If you are concerned, I would replace/inspect
the following components before getting tested:

Does the engine run right? (missing, exhaust smoke, etc., would be bad)
Spark Plugs
Air Cleaner
Recent oil change
Oxygen sensor if car is running poorly
No holes in exhaust system

Your catalytic converter should be fine provided it has not been abused.

I don't know how your emissions test would work, but certainly driving the car
for at least 10 miles and then holding the revs up immediately before the test
should help keep the catalytic converter warm.

I wouldn't be concerned about the chip, provided its manufacturer is
reputable.

Here, if your car fails the emissions test, you can have it retested as
many times
as you want without showing any receipts for work. (Of course, the test costs
$20...) If you get work done _at an accredited shop_ they give you a
provisional
pass. You have to jump through the same hoop every year (get $XXX worth of
work done) and get a provisional pass until your car finally passes for
real. I
don't know what the rules are in Georgia.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Removing the instrument cluster

The patient is a 1991 318is. I want to pull the cluster to
fix the crack which causes the brake lining light to stay on
and to tighten the nut which causes the temp gauge to do the
jitterbug.

I pulled all the bits apart on the weekend only to find that
the upper steering wheel shroud interferes and prevents the
removal of the cluster - I couldn't find a way to get the
shroud out of the way. Rats! I guess I have to pull the airbag
and the wheel. I'm familiar with the procedure for this and
know that the battery should be disconnected well in advance.
I guess I'll have to buy a Torx T30 driver, too.

My question is - will removal of the steering wheel shroud be
obvious once I've got the wheel off? Are there any *other*
gotchas I need to be aware of? I realize the airbag is a bomb
and I've a healthy respect for such things - I'll disconnect
the battery a day before I do anything else and will make sure
to keep my face and body clear when I handle it.

TIA

Well I finally got her running and I must say I have missed her!! Some of
you will remember my original post that said I had broken the oil filter
housing bolt and part of it was stuck in the housing. After removing the
air box, belt, alternator, and power steering pump I managed to remove the
oil filter housing and have the lodged bolt extracted. It was edm'd out and
I only paid $50. I'm not too sure how much I saved by doing it myself but I
know it must have been a few hundred bucks. If anyone ever has this problem
(and I'm sure someone will) drop me an e-mail and I will give you a few
helpfull tips. I would like to thank everyone that helped me out with this
little problem of mine. There are too many people to list so I will
basically thank everyone on the list. You all are like the family I never

Now to get legal on this thread...

Perhaps one of the list's current or former officers of the peace would
care to comment on the liability of a car owner for things s/he didn't
know s/he had in the car. It's kinda scary that two listers found
stashes of marijuana in their cars that they didn't know were there. I
bet a drug-sniffing dog wouldn't be as forgiving...

So, hypothetically, if I buy a used car and someone had "put his WEED
in there", unbeknownst to me, could I get my butt dragged off to jail?
And would a good lawyer be able to get me out? I'm really interested,
as this kinda situation would seriously put a damper on someone's day
if it ocurred...

Neil,

Your E30 should pass with no problem. I don't know specifics for
Georgia, but here in Colorado, my Eta passed with flying colors
(emissions on the order of a magnatude less than allowed). So, as long
as you haven't gutted the cat(alytic converter) or let the O2 sensor
die on you, you should be good to go.

Just make sure you warm the car up really well before taking it in to
get inspected, or it'll read higher-than-normal emissions (ask me how I
know...).
