Yo tire experts ....

Am getting ready to change tires on the 540. the Toyo Proxies suck.
Duane gave me some good leads (Thanx, Duane..) and I think that the
right size is going to be 245/45/17.

I'm leaning towards the Pirelli P7000SS, but my tire guy is recommending
Dunlop SPORT5000's. The car is in the NorthWest, so wet
handeling is a concern. Looking for a little more ride comfort and
a little less trammlining. cost is a factor.

Wud appreciate any comments on my 2 choices and any others that y'all
think are right.

If you want your 325/328 to handle like the M3 and don't want to deal with
aftermarket parts, get all of the M3 suspensions parts to include the M3
Offset bushing, which make a big difference.
If you want to have your 325/328 to handle better, you are looking at
aftermarket suspensions to replace all stock suspension, plus 17" tire and
wheels, M3 offset bushing, x-brace and strut bar.

Crap! That could've happened to me. My car was drug sniffed by a k9 unit
and I bought the thing used. I had been through the suspension, motor, etc
so that was OK, but I had never pulled up the rear seat, removed the trunk
liner, etc when some stash could've landed me in jail. Yikes.

I'm no tire expert, but I've been enjoying the bridgestone potenza re730s
I got. They stick pretty well, are great in the wet, do not tramline
anywhere near as much as the michelans did, do not make too much noise,
and aren't too expensive.

I saw the thread on autocrossing and just thought everyone might find this
story interesting.

I was at an event at the Steel Cities SCCA (Pgh, PA) a couple of summers ago
and a guy in a race prepared 914 flipped it going into a moderate speed
turn. One of my friends was working that corner and said that the guy just
got into the turn, didn't hit anything, didn't go off the tarmac (private
airport runway) but it took a grip and got up and rolled over. I saw it
from a distance, unbelievable. The car was lowered and on race rubber. It
has just been completely restored for vintage shows.

He had a roll bar and of course a helmet, no injuries but it was the
weirdest thing to see!

When I had my '91 M5 I used the Pirelli P7000SS and loved them for your type
application. It doesn't rain all that much here in Virginny but when it did
they were a ball. Very predictable breakaway and hook-up made for fun
tail-out cornering when I wanted, they pumped water like a fire truck, wore
well, and corrected a huge tramlining problem I had on (admittedly worn out)
Dumflops.

Before these tires went on I had to approach each intersection with both
hands firmly on the wheel ready to fight that twitchy lane changing feel of
tramlining. Afterwards I could drive up with a fingertip holding the wheel
without concern. These were in the size Duane has already mentioned.

I have a subwoofer and amp combination from Kenwood (bazooka style), can I
add this right to my E36M3? If so, would I do all the connections at the
stock amp in the rear of the vehicle? I know that my sub/amp combo is not
very good, but would like to at least give it a shot to see if it can help in
any way.
Thanks for any help offered.

Jerry,

The 2002/M3 hybrid is still there. The drive train is installed, as is the M3
suspension and dashboard and controls. It is a very slick installation, down to the
last detail. The last time I was there the interior was in progress. The engine bay
was refinished in Malaga (the original maroon), as will be the rest of the car. I can
believe $50,000. It should be one helluva track car, though I don't know the owner and
his intentions.

I don think US spec E28's do. I believe the E34's were the first 5 series.
It's a good thing because they are a pain in the but to get too.

Steve, the cluster should come right out. I have had a few e30's and
replaced the light bulbs and batteries. I have been able to get everyone
out without removing the steering wheel. Pull the top towards you and slide
it out and down to the right and it will come right out. Seriously. It will

Ken;

The 8-series board at www.bimmers.org is an active one, with lots of owners
who seem happy to share war stories, buying tips, price points, etc. This
would be a great place to start. I have to admit, however, that every time I
surf through that Board, I leave feeling that my M5 is simple, reliable and
cheap to fix. ;-)

Subject: [uuc] E28 M5 seats

I have tried to fix my driver's power seat to no avail. When I installed my
cellular phone, I pulled a bonehead move and thought I'd go the constant 12v
to the seats. I pulled the drivers seat switch console and spliced into a
wire that showed 12v with the car off. When I hooked the phone up, I heard
relays clicking like hell. I disconnected the splice and now the seats
won't work. I got another relay box (the box that goes under the knee
bolster and has all the relays in it) but they still won't work. The only
thing that works on the seat is the headrest motor. Everything else is
dead. Anyone on this list know about the wiring of these seats? Other
relay's I don't know about...in other areas...behind the dash???? I'm at a
loss here. Passenger side works fine. I thought I blew the little control
box I mentioned earlier but a used one didn't do the trick. I'd be
surprised if both control boxes are bad, because they both do the same
thing...headrest works only. Help would be mucho appreciated.

Subject: [uuc] E28M5 tranny noise

Another question....what is that friggin noise that seems to come from the
tranny in my M5? It only happens when the car is in gear and moving. If I
am moving at speed, and put the clutch in, the sound dissappears. The sound
is like a mild clicking...repititious...clicks increase with speed, of
course. The sound seems to eminate from below the stick shifter. I can't
really describe the sound that well. I'm confused and surprised that this
M5 would have wear in the tranny considering it's babied past (have full
service records showing inspections completed and red line tranny
fluid...even window sticker) and low mileage at 67,000. I just had
inspection II done a couple months ago.

Steve,

For the E30 style dash, you do not need to remove the steering wheel to
remove the instrument cluster.

I think that the above paragraph is what you needed to know. AS far as
I know, you do not need to remove the wheel, just be able to get to the
lower cluster screws.
