Ha, don't be flashing your lights at any silver E36 M3's if you are in the
NC area. Chances are you'll see instant deceleration from 80 mph to the 70
mph speed limit (after I check my rearview for traffic of course). I always
try to use something other than lights to salute other bimmers. Lights too
often mean that there is a cop sitting in wait ahead.

I have a '94 325i (build date 07/94) that I bought
after it came off a lease in Florida. How do I know
or tell if it has a limited slip differential?

Get under the car and on the rear differential, the serial number should
begin with a "S" if you have limited slip. I was once told that if you have
heated seats then your car probably has limited slip, but this may be an old
wise tale.

I would not bother with a used cat...they wear out, clog up and start to
rattle. An aftermarket cat works great, and costs a lot less than stock
($350?)

Rob's M5 exhaust is fantastic. I got it installed with an aftermarket cat,
and it sounds great without being offensively loud. You can really tell
that you have a DOHC engine.

If you want to buy my OEM exhaust, in good condition, e-mail me privately.

If you remove the thermostat housing, at least on a 95 M3, you will be able
to see down to the water pump. You will see the shaft of it, and barely see
the blades. If it is plastic, you will see the plastic shaft. Mine was
cracked, but not yet slipping when I replaced it....close call.
Maybe you should do a coolant change, and look and see.

Jack up the rear so both tires are off the ground. Put the trans in gear or
park to lock the driveshaft. Spin one rear tire, if the other rear tire
turns the opposite direction, you have an open differential (no limited
slip). If the tire won't turn, place the trans in neutral and try again.
If both rear tires turn the same direction, you do have limited slip.

I thought it was on/off with the lights to signal a cop. That is what I

Besides, I only flash E36 M3s from behind. *ducks* :)

Has anyone else seen the front stress bar in the new Bavarian catalog? I
know the UUC and JTD bars are both excellent, but the picture in the
catalog shows two aluminum tubes with various compound bends that are
WELDED directly to to the circular strut tower mounting flanges. It's not
the prettiest looking thing, but looks effective (no hinges, simple as it
gets), and is relatively inexpensive - like $179 for an E36.

I don't see any down side to this (I don't give cosmetic appearance much
priority) - do you?

Subject: [uuc] Re: 328 vs. M3

Something I haven't seen mentioned in this thread, that makes a significant
difference, is the _other_ things that are different in the front geometry
of the two cars... If you want your 325 or 328 to emulate the performance
of the M3, you should consider:

1. M3 upper strut bearings (offset for more camber)
2. M3 rear control arm bushings (95's are offset and voidless)
3. M3 front control arms (stiffer ball joints)

As the good folks at TC Kline pointed out, and I can now personally attest,
these components will _dramatically_ change the feel of the car. You can
replace springs, shocks and swaybars 'til the cows come home, and you'll
still be trying to figure out why your turn in isn't as crisp as your
buddy's M3.

If you really want to sharpen the handling on your E36, save the money you
would spend on adjustable camber plates (use shims at the bottom of the
strut instead) and put it into 1,2 & 3 above. You will be happy...

Ron,

Well ya got off halfway or so.....not bad. What he did in the 'failure to
obey highway sign" was give you what is considered a non-moving violation,
which looks a whole lot better on any DMV report than a speeding ticket.
It's also carries one less point than a general speeding ticket. What that
really amounts to is a fine rather than something that will give your
insurance guy cause to whack your rates. "Failure to obey a highway sign"
can mean you parked in a "No Parking" zone, or did not merge correctly,
etc., and has a wealth of interpretations. No reference to the word "speed"
will show up on any record. So he cut you a break, but not enough to let
you go scott free. Consider it successful.

As for the window tint, the VA cops HATE it. It's a personal safety issue
around here as they can't see what the occupants are doing in the car. They
will almost never give you a break on window tint. What most VA people do
is to go light on the fronts and sides, then darker on the rear window
(which is allowed). Guess that cop had a personal issue with tint. Wonder
if he nails all the FL cars coming though VA for tint violations as well?
Lotta drug traffic on the interstates around here......cops getting shot and
all that. (Hi Brett !!)

Pay the fines, not much collateral damage on your driving record from the
encounter. You won't win either of those in court. And he gave you a
little bit of a break so ya did pretty good overall I think.

It's how they sound. Think M-22 Rock Crusher. I think the E30's of the
