Steve,

Kobalts are made in Snap-On's plants as Snap-On's way of getting its foot in
the door in hardware stores, etc. They would never even think of taking
their premium line into the hardware stores, so this the alternative. I
think they are probably the best of the mid-line tools out there that are
mass marketed. They have a very nice finish on them and seem to have a nice
weight/feel to them. They're not a Snap-On, but they look better to me than
Husky, Craftsman, S-K and Allied. I don't think the line has much depth
though. Pretty much limited to the basics like sockets and open ends. I
believe you can only get them at Lowes.

Subject: [uuc] Bimmer bargain - 12V Impact Wrench

I have recently found a tool which I have been using for the last
few months and now feel is worthy of recommendation.. I autocross
my E30M3 monthly (or more often) and change wheels and tires at the
track.. I have purchased a Campbell-Hausfeld RL1002 12V Impact
Wrench kit and it has been marvelous in its operation.. This impact
has an electrical cord and plugs into one's cigarette lighter.. It's box
proclaims it is rated for 250 ft.lbs but I would guess it truly only operates
up to 150 ft-lbs with respect to removing wheel lugs.. It comes with an
extension, 3/4, 13/16 and 17mm sockets and a hard plastic carrying case
for all.I purchased it for $50 at Meijer's (for those of you in the midwest)
after seeing it in the tool section. I began to look for this after using a similar
model a friend of mine owns made by Chicago Electric I believe..

This is an electrical device, so it is nowhere near the force and bpm that
an air driven tool has. When you push the button it spools up for it's impact...
It takes about 4 seconds to get up to speed, an inertia lock engages the ratchet
with an audible "click" and it generally makes one impact THWACK! when
you are working on wheel lugs. This is enough torque to work my lugs off
in most cases when I torque them to 75-80ft-lbs with the torque wrench...
If the first THWACK! doesn't break the lug free then it winds up for another
impact and goes thwack! and the lug spins all the way out..
. An air driven tool just goes bratatatatatatatatatatatatatatat and has given you
about 25 impacts in 2 seconds..... VERY different. This unit has nowhere
near the force but works methodically and flawlessly thus far... I am aware that
there is a SNAP-ON unit that is cordless but it runs about 6X more expensive
than this unit, although surely is a better unit while also enabling one to work
without being attached by a cord.

I looked for this tool at the local Walmart and while they carried nearly every
Campbell Hausfeld item they did not stock the 12V Impact.. YMMV.
So far this tool has been the best $50 I have spent on a track related item...

Sounds pretty ratty for $5k. Pristine example in my part of the country would
go for $7-8k. I would hold out for a nice one.

An '87 325is is a great car, but you can bet on some high maintenance with
that mileage...especially if the clutch hasn't been changed...that's a "fun"
job <g>. The timing belt should be changed about every 50k to 60k miles (I
believe), so it's about ready again. There are alot of fine examples out
there in the $5k range...I'd pass, unless you have some sort of "attachment"
to the car (color combo, etc.)...you can do better. $500 to rectify the OBC
problem is ridiculous! Do it yourself...help is out here.

$60 may buy a nice Strap-on filter wrench, but we also know what $20 buys

Subject: [uuc] RE Celisa's CD changer

Celisa,

You have an e-36, right?

When I purchased my e-36 99 M3, I wanted a CD player as both of our cars had a
CD player as well as our home stereo system - we do not own any tapes. But I
was put off by the price BMW was asking for the CD changer. I also had a 6 disc
changer in an old Acura Legend and found I rarely changed the CDs (mainly due to
me being lazy). All of our cars subsequent to the Legend had in-dash CD players
(i.e., one disc at a time). I found I really like this system better. So I
purchased the Blaupunkt Toronto (check out www.crutchfield.com for a picture).
It replaces the BMW tape deck and I think it matches the interior quite nicely.
Also I think it sounds better and the display color is adjustable to a perfect
match of the BMW orange. I like music, but I am not a stereo nut, so I felt the
stock speakers and amps were fine. I was not looking for a killer system, I
wanted a CD player and something that looked stock. For the price, the Blau
Toronto fit the bill. The only downside is the display can "wash out" in direct
sunlight, but you can also think about the money you saved buying the Blau over
the 6 disc changer. Installation was a snap and I believe Crutchfield will
provide you will the wiring kit for free as well as a call in number for install
help. If you can strip a wire and are NOT color blind, you can install this
stereo.

As for service, I had a problem with my CD player not ejecting on a random
basis. The Crutchfield customer service rep tried to solve the problem over the
phone. After trying for a little while, he said he would ship a new one out
that day and after I received it, ship the old one back "when I had a chance".
He wanted to make sure I not without a stereo.

Now for the disclaimer, I have no interest in Blaupunkt or Crutchfield, just a
happy consumer.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me direct.
