Subject: [uuc] RE: Garage Heater Follow-up

I wanted to thank everyone for their input on my garage heater
question. Using radiant heat in the floor sounds like the best way to
go but the cost is big $$$$ for the few times a year I would use it.
After talking to our contractor I don't think the vent less natural gas
heater meets the building codes. I need to call the inspection unit
next week to confirm this. If that is the case, then I will have a
vented natural gas heater installed as part of the building process.

Thanks again for the help.

God I hope so. At the most charitable I'd have to call you "incoherent".

This is Rob's list, period. You don't like it? Feel more than free to make
your own and leave. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

Subject: [uuc] [E36] Bad vibrations under acceleration

Recently (within the last two days or so) my '94 325is has begun to vibrate
under acceleration. The vibration is like a shudder that occurs only when I
am on the gas but disappears as soon as I am off (to upshift, for example).
It only occurs under at least moderate power (at least halfway down on the
gas pedal), and then only above 3-4000 RPMS. I experience it as soon as I
push the pedal and the RPMs climb above that level. I get the vibration in
1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears but the higher gear I'm in the more RPMs it seems to
take to start shuddering and I have not reached that speed in 4th or 5th
gears since it started. More throttle/higher RPMs/lower gears all seem to
increase the strength of the vibration, but I do not get the vibration at
all unless I am accelerating somewhat hard. I think that fact would rule
out things like wheel bearings, tire pressure/wheel weights, various
driveshaft bushings, etc. I don't notice any clutch slippage either; speed
seems to rise smoothly with RPMs even during the shudder, and I would think
that if the clutch were slipping I would be able to smell it burning as I
melted it under hard acceleration, but I can't. The car has 98,xxx miles
and is rigorously maintained. Somebody please help me figure out what this
is and what I need to do to fix it; this will really spoil any upcoming nice
weekend drives around twisty roads! Thanks!

P.S. Some months ago I mailed out some copies of a procedure I had to
install one-touch sunroof opening and closing into an E36. I think I've
since lost that procedure. Could one of you who asked for it and still has
it send me back a copy? Thanks a lot.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Radio in German mode?

Sorry for the cross post...

Hey everyone,
I was working on my radio yesterday and I think I left it disconnected from
power for too long, and now it's stuck in a weird mode. The FM freq steps in
every tenth instead of every other tenth, and the "SC" letters come on with
every other press of the tune buttons. The AM freq has weird possibilities,
like 1035, and the weather band is non-existent!

Is this a default German radio setting?
Is there a secret key-press sequence to get it back in U.S. mode?

I have the base stereo from '87, i.e. no pyramid-shaped toggle button or
stereo amp.

Thanks guys (and gals),
Grant

This week on the AutoWeek there was a nice little segment on the BMW 2002.
It may be repeated on Monday at 5:30p or Tuesday at 7:00a.

Roland,

I just sold my '87 325is last summer. Dangit, why? But I digress ...

Keep looking for the six if this is the only 325is you've seen.
I agree with Dana (dlearl@aol) and others who said to hold out -
for that price you can find a nicer example. For a few dollars more
you can find an EXCELLENT example.

Brake lining light: may be that the sensors were not replaced when
the pads were done - it's less than $10 but aftermarket pads don't
come with new sensors. It wouldn't be that hard to short the leads
for the sensor to keep the light off.

Coolant warning light: my '87 was sensitive to the level in the overflow
tank. That being said, any car for sale should have its fluids topped off.
Duh.

Replacement headlights are available at Wal-Mart's fine, extensive
automotive lighting department for about $8. I just bought one for my
'87 325i (4-door) to pass inspection for the same reason.

If the PO hasn't handled these three simple issues, what else has been
ignored?

And any moron (including yours truly) can make the lights go off, assuming
the NiCad batteries are not totally dead in the instrument cluster.
Although
a resistor is preferable, I have also done this work with a paper clip,
which
isn't quite $500, even at the local friendly Pentagon parts supplier.

Hey Lane,
Funny that you should ask for a copy of that procedure; the one-touch
write-up already made it to the webpage...
http://www.wpi.edu/~vmcmalfa/bmwhome.htm
Click on the Skunworks navigation button, then the UUC section, and it's in
the list of procedures. :)

Subject: [uuc] Re: Whadja find in dere?

When I was a student at the University of California at Davis,
I drove for the associated students' bus service. As you might
imagine, this was a low-budget operation, and the rolling stock
had been selected, mostly on the basis of low cost, from the
castoffs of legitimate transit systems. (Drivers were selected
on much the same basis, except that considerably less expereince
was required of them.) My electrical fixit compulsion really
bothered me when stuff didn't work and when bare, loose wires
dangled from under the dash. I conned the boss into a job as
the Bus Electrician.

One of the minor problems I got around to after months on the
job was an entire row of non-working interior lights on the
upper deck of a London Bus (one of five in the fleet). These
bulbs had huge bayonet bases and ran on 24 volts, so they were
impossible to find in the U.S. and expensive to import from
Britain. Because of this, they burned out often and sometimes
disappeared to become souvenirs. Even though it was possible
for several to expire in a month, this did not explain my
problem that day. After some probing with a meter and some
rooting around in the wiring conduits, I found a cleanly cut
wire in a junction box under the rear stairs, along with the
following written on a folded-up scrap of paper:

"This piece of paper was put on this bus on September
19th at 11:10 a.m. Will the finder please write to
Mr. D. Woods, 8, The Retreat Crown Rd., Grays, Essex,
  England"

I wrote but never got a response, and I never learned the
year of Mr. Woods's stunt.

And there was light.

No, removing the back seat won't help, unless perhaps he has the ski pass
through. The trunk and car interior are separated by a steel partition.
