Here's two short stories.. the first we found and the second we put in
there. The car involved is my buddy John's '77 530i. Anyone not familiar
with the original 5 series (E12) really needs to hop out of their newer
models and pick up the book BMW which covers these early models. Anyway,
his parents and I surprised him by buying him this BMW. He'd been
complaining about wanting a car and that an old 70's Mercedes Diesel would
be cool (another friend of ours has one). He'd also mentioned that he liked
BMWs but they were all too expensive (what he liked was an E36 sedan - way
outta his range). So, his mom and I find this wonderful little gem... a
1977 530i owned by a neighbor a block down from us. Turns out we've passed
his house hundreds of times but never realized there was a Bimmer in his
backyard!
So we buy this car from Hugo "The Mexican Thespian" Yanez for $500. It has
an odometer with 93,000 showing but he can't tell us how many times it's
rolled over (I'm guessing twice). The backseat is completely torn up
(apparently his dog used to go psycho and freak out back there). The car is
mechanically wonderful and the brakes...dang the brakes feel like a 2-ton
anchor!
But I digress....in the backseat we found a tooth while cleaning it up..
the dog story was right-on!

And now, for what we put INTO the trunk....

After using his car (the nicest ride out of all of ours - with the most
"cargo capacity") to transport...well let's just say beverages for older
people...we had some bottles break and made it smell. After that we just
lined the trunk with black plastic and filled it with the aforementioned
"beverage" for people to dip into as they got thirsty. Needless to say, the
goal was to have it all gone by the time the party was over....can't drive
with a pool in the trunk, now can we? We'd toss out the liner at the end of
the night and drive home (DD permitting of course). That's kinda on par
with Chester's stories only mine took place last summer :)

(like Scooby-Doo) Huh? Ruh-Roh... I don't get it.. Where's the fireball?
The self inflicted pain? Maybe it's cuz I've never gotten drunk in my
life....I just don't get it...

Clueless,

(Dig the Scooby-Doo reference ;-)) Unfortunately, there were no fireballs.
The only self-inflicted pain is when John's slack-ass didn't fill the power
steering reservoir (which, at it's worst, lasted all of 12 minutes on a
straight road) and you'd have to man-handle that puppy to the next service
station for him to cough up $7.50 for another bottle. Why he didn't get it
fixed earlier or buy family packs of fluid is beyond me. For the record,
I've never gotten drunk either. Well...there was this once where I was
pretty tipsy and I apparently started ranting about hating sticky fingers..
Ya know like when you make a conscious effort NOT to get your hand in the
waffle syrup but then, the next thing you know.. your fingers are
sticky!...*sigh* Anyway... I didn't mean to insinuate like it's smart to
fill the back of a car full of booze and get into trouble. I was usually
the most responsible one there and made sure it was kept safe. We merely
used the trunk as a big punch bowl if you get the picture.

If the key was working okay up until he broke it off he may be able to use
the remaining part to push the broken part down and turn it. I'm guessing
you've tried that though. No electric trunk lock in '84? If it's there and
just not working this might be a good time to check for wiring problems
inside the car somewhere.

Failing that, removing the rear seatback isn't going to be much help. You
could knock out the ski pass-thru panel but I doubt anyone could reach
anything through there (your friend's name isn't Dikembe is it?). There's a
slim chance that you could find some way to actuate the lock with a really
long screwdriver but I don't know the contruct of an '84.

Sounds like it may be locksmith time.

Oh no! I seem to have upset somebody who HATES stupid
gadgets in cars. Now what would be a stupid gadget to
have in a car? a drinks holder yes! after all its hard
to try and have a nice drink while travelling at over
100 MPH
Where in my post does it say anything about watching
movies or playing games while I'm on the move?
I would have though it as clear as glass that the
movies or games are for the passengers while I'm
driving but I guess I'll have to explain every little
detail for doh's like you. The only thing I do on the
move is listen to music nothing else, ok clear enough.

For the Roundel impaired, highlights are:

1) OK to bleed systems w/ASC+T
2) Don't allow reservoir to run dry
3) Must go to dealer if 2) occurs
4) To completely flush: bleed, drive & engage ASC & ABS, re-bleed

More interesting details in Roundel. Great value at $35/yr.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Stereo wiring help!

I'm helping to install a new CD head unit in a friend's
1984 318i and we need help regarding the wiring. When the
previous stereo was stolen, the friggin' savages just
pulled and cut wires so I am now staring at a mess of
wires. My friend does not have a Bentley manual despite my
constant nagging so we have no idea what goes where. Could
someone send me the wiring info?

Subject: [uuc] Re: 87 325is - buying assistance (long)

Roland,

$5k is a little too much money for a car in the condition you
described. Maybe if it were $5k Canadian dollars, it might (small
might) be worth a second look. Sounds like the car was either driven
hard by its owner or not taken very good care of. There are real
bargins out there if you spend more time looking. When I bought both
my bimmers, I spent at least 2 solid weeks looking (not counting the
time I put in surfin the net and researching in the library), and
found cars I'm very happy to own (and spend money on). A couple of
things I always check when looking at a used bimmer (especially the
pre-90s kind)...

1) Make sure all essential lights are working.*
2) Are all the tools still in the toolkit? *
3) How clean and presentable is the car? *
4) Does the owner keep all the paperwork? *
5) Are all the fluids in the car at the proper level? *
6) Has the owner kept the car mantianed regularly? *

* these are just a FEW things that will tell you if the car has been
well looked after or not. If the owner does not take decent care of
the car, chances are there will be hidden problems.

7) Check the suspension/brakes.
8) Check all hoses for leaks and sloppy DIY jobs.
9) Look for rust in all the usual places (ie. spare tire well, rear
panel, wheel wells, etc...)
10) Any funny smells when you drive the car?
11) Any unusual noises when driving/idle/cornering?
12) Is the underside of the block or steering rack coated in oil?
13) Make sure you test the car at highway speeds if possible. This
might bring out problems in the car's handling that are not noticable
at city speeds.
14) Bodywork. I would stay away from any car that has signs of forced
entry, slightly mis-matched bodypanel colors, or mis-aligned
doors/hood/trunk lid. Bring a small magnet and use it to check any
suspicous areas for filler.

Consider how much money you are willing to spend on the car AFTER you
buy it. I could keep going on, but I shan't. I just woke up so if
some of this doesn't make sense, ask me.

Rob,

Can't get into the trunk that way, not unless this guy is plastic man. If
you use a very narrow tweezers like an eyebrow one for a girlfriend, you
should be able to get in there and grab the offending part. I had the same
prob many moons ago in the winter.

Greetings. I'm new to the list. I'm picking up my new 323ci

The dealer quotes $695 to supply & install the E64 alarm system.
Doesn't this seem high? Do I negotiate?

If I take the car elsewhere and put in a Clifford system, are
the threats of voiding my warranty truthful?
