Kip,

For the arm rests go to a benz dealer, they used to have this prob with
some vinyl/leather, and the have or had a conditioner that got rid of the
problem. The dealer told me to remove the windshield washer float and boil
it in a water vinigar solution to remove the gunk. Haven't had a problem
since.

As long as you don't have service problems. They used to work with you, but
I guess that after spending over 25K and driving 60 miles for service in
the last 5 years they don't want to work with long term customers that have
problems on used rides that they JUST purchased.(just a flame directed at
service, not parts, they are great.)

Subject: [uuc] Broken Plastic Ring for E36 Mid Range Speaker

I am sending this message out again because I posted it just before the
digest went down and I don't know if it went through.
My mid range speaker ring has been cracked for a few weeks now on the
passenger side. And finally yesterday it gave out and fell down the door.
It broke in two spots, hence there are two pieces. I called the dealer for
just the screen and ring for the speaker, but naturally they will only sell
the whole speaker for a mere $70 plus installation. I was thinking of maybe
getting some special glue (no idea which) and putting it back together, but
that would look horrible. I know this is one of those top ten tings that go
wrong in the E36 so any ideas would be great. I have a feeling I am just
going to have to cough up the dough. TIA.

Ed,

Here is one good source I was referred to:

http://infomatch.com/~cbaisley/bmw.htm

I just had mine stolen a few weeks ago. Fortunately the wiring was still
intact. However, it did not match the wiring on the web site listed above.
It was actually easier :-)

Subject: [uuc] M3 4-Dr prices

I was at the dealer Friday afternoon and test drove a '98 4-Dr M3 with
18,000 mi on the clock. I had a few questions for the digest

1. The price differential between a '97 and a '98 is nearly 10K. Do
'97s have some glitch that I'm unaware of?
2. The shifter was *very* notchy going into 1st even at a standstill. My
'92 325 does not do this, is this normal for an M?

Thanks,
Avi.

Subject: [uuc] Whadja find in dere AT THE TRACK?

Here's a new twist to this funny thread. What have you found in your
car on the track that may have been previously wedged under something?

At Lime Rock on Wed., I was sitting in the pit lane waiting to go out
on the track, all harnessed in, helmet and gloves on, etc., and
looked into the center console to see my wallet sitting in there. I
had gone out for gas a while before. Black wallet, black console.
Never saw it. So I just took it and threw it under the seat. :) When
packing up my stuff at the end of the day, I have the passenger seat
up and notice something black wedged under there. I was WONDERING
where that flashlight had gone! Good thing it was one of those black
rubber covered shock/water-proof ones, so it never moved.

Subject: [uuc] Re: <E30> Stereo wiring help!

Hi Ed,
I asked the digest for the same info regarding my former '84 318. Curt
Ingraham stepped up with what I needed; I'll just send you his original
reply to me:
- -----
In BMW Digest v07.n1714 Keith Way <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> Somewhere in my poor little ['84 318i] bimmer's life, it lost it's
> radio. Time to give it another [non-BMW radio]. ... I need to know
> what wires in the dash are for what

(My information is based on an '89 E30 ETM; details for an '84 car
may differ.)

Keith matched up these DASH wires with the FRONT SPEAKER wires:

  yellow/red = left front spkr +
  yellow/brown = left front spkr -
  blue/red = right front spkr +
  blue/brown = right front spkr -

and found these wires at the REAR SPEAKERS:

  yellow/black = left rear spkr +
  yellow/brown = left rear spkr -
  blue/black = right rear spkr +
  blu/brown = right rear spkr -

but he could not find the matching wires in the DASH. Perhaps the
other ends of those wires are at the amplifier. Some E30 cars have
an amp between the radio and the speakers. It will be necessary to
verify that fact before wiring in a new radio. If the car does have
an amp, all the speakers should have been wired to it rather than to
the radio. Look for the amp in the trunk above the left wheel house.

My '89 ETM yielded the following functions for the wires that Keith
found in the DASH:

  brown         = ground
yellow/black = left rear channel from radio to amp
blue/black = right rear channel from radio to amp
grey/violet = radio operating power (hot when key in Accy, Run, & Start)
grey/red = radio dial illumination (from light switch)
red/green = radio memory power (always hot)

And if there is an amp, the following applies between the radio and the
amp:

yellow/red = left front channel from radio to amp
blue/red = right front channel from radio to amp

I know this is sketchy, but it's at least a start.

This info worked for me (there was no amp in my '84, but I figured it out
just as well).
Hope this helps,
Keith Way

Subject: [uuc] What to see from KY to CT?

Well, after answering my share of questions from people asking
about what to see and do in Germany, now its my turn to ask about
the U.S.

I will be driving from Western Kentucky to Southern Connecticut
April 19-20, then I will be within striking distance of Newark,
NJ a few days later. Does anyone have any suggestions of
interesting routes or people or places that I should see?

I will have with me some gizmos I am working on if anyone would
like to see some of my projects for a few E36 3ers.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

Subject: [uuc] <E30> <iX> Control Arm Replacement -DONE

A couple weeks ago I polled the list about replacing my control arms. Thanks
to Jack Money and Neil Deshpande for pointing me to the website describing
the replacement of control arm bushings and thanks also to Matt Weimer for
the instructions and pictures re:changing front CV boots on an iX. Both
references helped me get my arms around the project.

I finished the job a couple days ago. About a 5 hour job by myself. Don't
think I would have tackled it without the heads-up mentioned above and moral
support from Jeff Roberts.

Replaced the following parts:

Control Arms $174 per side ($239 list) - from VOB
Non-offset Polyurethane bushings $40 per side - from RTRS, Inc.

Also purchased the following special tools:

Control Arm Bushing Bracket puller ($120) - from Technic Tool
Control Arm Bushing Arbor for pressing out bushing ($30) - from Technic Tool
Ball Joint Separator ($16) - from Napa Auto

The most difficult part of this project was separating the ball joint from
the strut housing. Took a large hammer and a good dose of moxy. Nothing from
the engine bay had to be removed; all bolts could be reached from below
using box and end wrenches. Local shopped pressed the bushings in/out for
$10.

Haven't notice too much difference. The upgraded bushings seem to transmit
more road noise to the cabin. There is less tramlining...perhaps there has
been some freeplay developing for a while. Front-end does seem to be
tighter.
