The electric leather sport seats in my 535is are in need of repair, and
instead of recovering them, I'm looking for other alternatives. I'd
particularly be interested in cloth, manual sport seats (savings in
weight over electric), from Euro cars. I'd also like to consider
replacement aftermarket sport/racing such as Koenig, Sparco, Recaro,
etc. Any leads as to used items in good condition, or distributors for
new ones would be appreciated.

Subject: [uuc] <E36> X-brace

Hi Gruppe,

Just looking for some advice on the benefits of an X-brace on a '93 325is
with Bilsteins and the stock sports package (225/55VR15 tires). The car
has 80K on it and it's beginning to develop some slight sqeaks and rattles
due to Boston's wonderful roads :). I can feel some slight body flex over
rough roads. I'm wondering if the additional stiffness provided by the
X-brace would be noticeable on a daily driver, that may see a couple of
autocrosses a year.
Any opinions/reactions, especially from people that have installed them on
an older E36?

I've heard people mentioned that it reduces drifting in corners (less
understeer)
and may result in less body roll. Can anyone confirm this?

(I've installed frame connectors on F-bodies with enormous benefits in
structural
integrity and handling, but they had less than stiff structures from the
factory.)

Thanks!

Subject: [uuc] LTW GT wing spacers

Hi gang:
I have recently found out the the spacers for the high
LTW GT wing are NLA. Does anyone have a set that they
would be willing to get dimensions, photos,
descriptions, drawings, etc. to me? I have a good
friend that works in Boeing's Advanced Materials lab
that would make them for me, but he needs to have an
idea about how to make the tooling. Please respond
privately unless info good for the list.

TIA

Subject: [uuc] misc- 325is, D.C. & Texas pre-purchase

I have to offer my thanks to all of you that took the time to email me on
and off list. I have found a pre-purchase (for the six) in the D.C. area
and I plan to have it scheduled this week. As I expected, the respondants
to my 325is questions suggested I look elsewhere. With all of the help on
the list I probably could fix all of its problems, but the list is long and
comprises only what my untrained eyes could see.

One more question off topic if I could. My mother in-law (help me suck up
to the wife, wontcha!) wants a suburban. If any listers in the Tyler,Texas
area know of a shop which could inspect this type of vehicle, please contact
me.

Thanks again,

Roland

Didn't run my stored M3 enough this winter and had a dead battery. I pulled
it and put it on the charger, then thought about what might happen when I put
it back in.
I recall some warnings here on the digest about needing resets if I do it
wrong.
Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Subject: [uuc] <E34>Before & after Dinan springs-pics

Here's some pictures I took of my 93 525i 5-speed before and after
I installed Dinan springs and Boge gas shocks. I've had the BBS RK
wheels on for the past month without the springs, and I'm very
satisfied now that the suspension has been upgraded as well.

So far the total drop has been 5/8" in front and 1/8" in back for
my car. I hear it still may settle a bit more. The car is much
more fun to drive at this point, and I look for any and all
opportunities to take corners quicker than I probably should. Way
flatter and more composed through the turns, but with the expected
trade-off of a harsher ride at times. Only problem is now I want
to hit the track to find out exactly where the limits are of the
new setup. Time (and money) constraints pretty much rule that out
     for the present. :-(

     I went with 16" wheels and 225/55 Dunlop SP8000 Z-rated tires,
     since the car is a 525. If I had a 540, I'm sure I would have
     sprung for 17s.

After much research, both here on the digest and on bimmer.org I
made an educated guess and bought Boge gas shocks. I heard of at
least one individual who put the much lower H&R springs, with 18"
wheels, and didn't report any problems with the Boge gas shocks on
his E34. Seeing that these Boge gas shocks are stiffer and better
than the stock Boge hydraulic shocks, I took a gamble and tried
them instead of the Bilstein Sports. The only other option I was
considering was Koni adjustables. I figured that people say they
set the adjustables to the second softest setting, so I figured,
why bother? They might have been better, but I'm happy with the
     results I got.

Hope the pictures and information help somebody here on the digest.
I figured this may be one of the few times I actually have some
fairly technical information to share here, so why not make a post?
If anyone has any questions, just holler.

Celisa,

I ordered a factory alarm system from Pacific, along with a couple of
miscellaneous parts (filters, etc.). The alarm and parts were ordered at
the same time. When I did not receive anything after a week, I called them
and they said they did not have my order so I placed it again.

A week later, I received the parts.

A month later reviewing my credit card bill, Pacific charged me twice. I
called Pacific and they claimed I had been sent the two orders twice.
Needless to say, UPS was the carrier and either UPS or Pacific screwed up.

Pacific credited me for the second charge without too much arguing.

In summary, fairly sorry ordering process, too much follow-up needed and
somewhat sketchy stories (akin to "just return this at your local dealer").
Although, everything was made right in the end and the price was right.

YMMV but I miss Stephen. I think I may try one of these other places people
have recommended next time I order:

Dean:

I would highly recommend Midwest Eurosport in Bensenville for servicing
a Porsche. They are fair and honest and support Porsche Club events
phenomenally. They go up to Road America and down to Sebring and set up
shop. I don't think they even charge anyone for their at-the-track
service. If your friend ends up buying a Porsche and wanting to modify
it, they have really gotten into club racing in a big way and most local
racers I know take their car there. Although they used to work on most
German cars, I think their specialty has really been focused on Porsches
over the last few years and club racing in particular. They also do
fine work on Porsche repairs and tune ups, etc. George Weathered and
his brother Brian own the place. You can mention my name to George and
he'll be nice to you : ^ )

For BMWs, I've heard good things about Midwest Motorsport in Glenview.
No personal experience, but he seems pretty into the BMWCCA Chicago
region. Leo Franchi owns it.

HTH.

A friend of mine is looking to buy a used Porsche or perhaps a BMW. I
told
him that he needs to find a good independent shop to perform a
pre-purchase
inspection and to service the car after he buys one.

Does anyone have any recommendations or places to avoid? Feel free to

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Radio Problem

I'm driving along in my '90 M3 listening to the radio and all of a sudden no
sound. I pause figuring the DJ hit the plug on his way to the can and knocked
out the transmitter. Well after a few seconds nothing happened. I tried other
stations, AM, and the weather band. Still nothing. The unit obviously is
getting power since I see the channel lit up. Sound wise there is a very very
very faint hiss if you put the volume up high. I tried turning off/on, still
doesnt work. Any ideas on what happened? As an aside, the unit never (as long
as I have owned the car- 2 years)recognized the fact that a trunk mounted 6 CD
changer is mounted in the trunk. The CD unit apparently has power also, I just
could never get the CD choice to show up on the head unit. Could this most
recent and more sever problem be related to that? Up until today, the radio
worked fine (other than the CD), including the cassette.

Dear Digesters,
My daughter's 1980 320is has developed a starting problem when the tank get
to between 1/4 and 1/2 tank. It'll crank but not catch. Eventually it'll
start and then seem fine. The car is a blend of two, her original 320 gave
its live to protect her in a T-bone accident and I used its drivetrain and
another car and make 1 car out of two. I've replaced the external fuel pump
with her newer one, the fuel accumulator and new filter. I'm guessing the
intank pump is weak or not running. I have her good one from the original
car. I figure to replace it and replace the vent hoses which leak a little
if the tanks get real full. If you go to the gas station and fill the tank
it'll start right up fine. Could there be something else I should look
into??? I'd like very much any experiences in this vein. She'll be taking
the car to USC next fall and I want to make it as reliable as possible. It
runs well otherwise.

Thanks in advance.

Anybody have any tips for removing the big honkin' nut that holds the front
crank hub in place? Bentley mentions a special BMW tool to hold the shaft
in place while you apply the 300+ ft lbs. to break it loose. I figure there
might be an easier/cheaper way than buying that tool. Maybe someone in the
Northern VA area has one of these puppies and might be convinced to loan it
