Montana

My experience there was that they just don't go looking to enforce the
speeding law.

There are a lot of roads and not many troopers and enough real work to
do.

Before the repeal of the national speed limit, they issued those silly
$5 waste of resource tickets until they discovered the processing costs
were more than $5! I had come home from the Navy (no limit before I got
the draft notice and $.19 gas) and picked up twenty or so of them in my
914/6. Then I had to leave God's country to earn a living . . .

I have driven mostly rental cars there since, so no real tests of my
cars.

Silliest traffic law in Montana was letting me drive at 14 1/2. In a
Fiat 850 and a Bugeye Sprite.

I took my '97 540i to an indicated 149 MPH last month while on vacation
"out west". (I even have a picture to prove it...) Dinan SW does indeed remove
the top speed limiter! Given that the e39 speedo is a "bit" optimistic,
I'd say I probably saw an actual 144 - 145 MPH. Car was still pulling strong
and speed was climbing at about 5300 RPM when a terrible screeching
sound from the passenger seat forced me to slow down. Air conditioning
was still on.

I spent more time on this trip, from Denver to San Francisco, with the needle
above 100 MPH than below it.

In my '99 E46, I've set the cruise at 65 on a flat road, then reset the
OBC's avg mph. The OBC read 66.1, less than 2% difference.

How accurate is the OBC, though? If you go by the OBC's mpg readings (a
little optimistic at over 33 mpg on some highway-only trips), I wouldn't
suspect that it's mph value is any more accurate than mpg.

For the most part, freeways in my area don't have mile markers, but there
used to be a 3 mile stretch of flat freeway nearby that did have them, to be
used for speedometer checks. When the national speed limit was 55, it was
easy to set the cruise at 60 for that stretch and get a good reading on both
odometer and speedometer accuracy. Try that these days and you'd get run
over, but with some simple math ([3600*n]/[time in seconds to travel n
miles]) = avg speed), you could choose any speed for the speedometer check.
Too bad they removed the markers a while back, it helped relieve the
boredom.

Haven't posted anything here in a long time; sorry guys, I read this and couldn't stop
poking fun of it. No offense Ben or Carlos, but Ben, what I think you REALLY meant to
say was:

TRANSLATION: Yes Carlo, I put that motor and suspension together
one night after I had a 12 pack of Schlitz in the back shed! I'm amazed
that thing actually ran right considering all the leftover pieces I had
strewn about!

have ever thought aluminium tape could be so handy in patching up
gapin holes in the floor?

>Fun stuff! Rick and I were glad to see it go to a worthy team.

p.o.s. from us after we beat the living hell outta it!

TRANSLATION: Good job keeping that thing together, just don't kill yourself
'cause that car migh fall apart any second now......

Ryan,

Waddya mean by "stopped functioning?" Did the velcro come off the mats or
the floor? I've got the same car as you, with OE floor mats and they never
(and I really mean never) move unless I take them out intentionally. Could
yours have been improperly installed?

I seem to remember numerous complaints when the 330 first came out
about the steering being too soft/over-assisted, and then a decision
some months later by BMW to move back somewhat to "classical" feel.
Anyone know the build date of the change back?

I *gotta* believe that hitting 125-130 MPH (indicated) about TWO HUNDRED
times in the last year is worth more than some guy with a turbo going
160 MPH just ONCE... :)

That's from weekends at Roebling, VIR full, south, and north, and CMP.

I love VIR :) 125 indicated on the front straight, dunno about the back
straight (too scared to look).

Don't know about the build date switch over but I do
know that the update is being retrofitted to owners
who know enough to request it.

That was hilarious. Actually I thought the same thing when the new
owner mentioned who had owned/ran that car in Pro Rally but I'm not
that rude. :-)

I highly recommend Wheel Collision Center

They have done 11 wheels for me in the last year.

I am wondering if some one can help me with a puzzling
question. I have a 98 M3 that for some reason the
passenger door lock does not always work. The remote
will not not unlock the door or if I push the lock
button (beside the shifter) it does not work. It has
happened a few times but then fixes itself. I don't
understand how it doesn't work one minute but is fine
the next.

If you feel up to making your own signs, you can get a kit from Office Depot
for about $15.00 per sign. You lay it out and attach the included letters.

If you're a little higher tech, you can run a magnetic sheet through an ink
jet printer. You can get magnetic sheets from Sam's Club.

I've got the same problem you do having one of a dwindling number of
convertibles ('87 325iC). I solved the problem by throwing lots of candy.
At least the kids love me.

Gary,

I agree with you completely, my comment was made a bit tongue-in-cheek.
FWIW, I passed a trooper who was sitting on the median enjoying the sun and
shooting hand-held radar from the hood of his car about 30 minutes after my
sprint. I was going a smidge over 100 at the time and got only a friendly
nod. I think that the disparity between your experience and mine is exactly
why the ambiguous "limit" was overturned.
