(Yawn). What's this crap about going fast on deserted roads or race tracks.
How about the highest speed achieved in a school zone as school was letting
out. Or burnouts in the police station parking lot. Or Dukes of Hazzard
creek jumps.

Subject: [uuc] Was Aaaaaaa! Timing Belt

Is now Ahhhh. Happy Car.

The mechanic replaced the belt and tensioner. The car is much quieter now.
The lumpy idle seems to have gone (!?) and I am happy again.

The cause? No idea. It could have been tension, but then again it could have
been a bad tensioner and/or a bad belt. The belt was obviously damaged by
rubbing on the spacer on the crank pulley, but it also showed signs of
failing in other places on the belt unrelated to any rubbing.

The tensioner seems to be in good shape, except for the mounds of belt
material melted to it. I guess I know where the bits of belt that came off
went. It has some runout, but I don't know how much runout that part can
have, or if it happened later or was like that out of the box.

The cost? $50 for parts. He ate the labor, I ate the parts. Fair enough.

I will be the first to say that I may have jumped to conclusions before. The
cause will probably never be known, but all in all, the whole thing worked
out Ok.

BTW, this guy is still a good guy in my book. I will still go to him when I
need to. I know that he stands by his work (We won't discuss parts. Those
came from the dealer.)

How about fastest in a crappy car...

110 in an '84 Dodge Challenger 2.2... 85mph speedo, but with a bit of math
by the co-pilot, you can calibrate with the tack. It was fastest in 4th
gear... 5 was definitely an OD. The car would float and jump around, but
hey I was 16 and it was my mom's car...

I have some high-speed between other cars on the highway stories... but
those are only good with a couple of beers ;-)

Hey Carlos,

I actually rode with him in that beast, guess what? It was not as fast as
what we were doing in the club race. I had talked to Mr Stuck before hand
and he recoginized me when I got in the car. He asked me "do you want to
go fast or have fun" I replied "lets see what she will do"

Needless to say, he put on a good show. I think the car coudl have been
much faster, but it was on old, very old tires, so it just skated around
alot. But still a fun ride.

Using MY 1988, April build date, nope, not the same. That goes for the
filter housing as well. (If I'm not mistaken, the filter housings are on
opposite sides: pass. side for the 325; driver side for the M3.)

My stock-motored 1995 M3 indicated about 145 before the limiter kicked in.
I'm sure this had more to do with optimistic speedo readings than my
slightly larger-than-stock 245/40 tires.

The problem (and maybe part of why it was ruled to be unconstitutional) with
"Reasonable and Prudent" was that there was no clear, legal definition of
the term. Having family there, I was told at the time that anything north of
85 was judged (by the MT highway patrol) not to be reasonable or prudent.

On vacation there in '86 (during the 55 limit), I was clocked in my '81 320i
(OBMWC) entering a small town at higher that the posted 35 mph. Since it was
daylight, the fine was $5, paid to the officer at the scene. After dark, the
fine would've been much higher, I was told. This $5 fine was a holdover from
the pre-55 days, and the ticket never made it to insurance companies or my
home state. Heck, the cop may still have it!

Paul,

The Door lock actuator is failing. I have had this happen on two of the
four doors on my 98 M3/4. Assuming it's still under warranty, take it to
the dealer and have them replace the actuator. If it's no longer under
warranty, take it to the dealer and ask them if they can/will do it under a
warranty claim given that it is a common problem. If not, gets the parts
and/or take it to your favorite independent shop...

I am wondering if some one can help me with a puzzling
question. I have a 98 M3 that for some reason the
passenger door lock does not always work. The remote
will not not unlock the door or if I push the lock
button (beside the shifter) it does not work. It has
happened a few times but then fixes itself. I don't
understand how it doesn't work one minute but is fine
the next.
