The 323i diff (e21) was limited slip, and my butt-dyno combined with my mk. 1 detection unit (eyeball) told me that the gearing had changed somehow. I (I built up the car, then sold it to the mentioned friend) was able to reach higher speeds with lower RPMs, which was part of the reason for the change, as the 320i was a whiny little something something at highway speeds before the diff swap. We actually just swapped a rear 323i subframe onto the 320i, so we got the diff and the rear disk brakes. Only other thing we had to change was the emergency brake cables. As for beating the Mustang, I think it was more a matter of how fast the mustang wanted to go, not how fast it could go...then again, that 320i was pretty fast... - -Ryan - - Ryan P. It doesn't cost much and can make an enormous difference in the feel when you're done. It'll also help the new clutch last. Once the flywheel is out it's a pretty simple and straightforward matter to replace the rear main seal to keep your clutch nice and dry too. Then there's the clutch slave and throwout bearing just sitting there looking old and tired... You can save a few bucks now not replacing the throwout but to do it later means dropping all that stuff again. Oh yeah, don't forget to take a look at the tranny input shaft. If there's signs of oil around it there's another seal that can be done easily now. Sorry I didn't document all of these steps while doing the clutch in my race car but I only had a day to do the whole job start to finish and didn't have the good digital camera I have now. BTDT, coming down from Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood towards Portland--twenty miles downhill. It was nice reward for all the work on the way up ;-) Scared a few cars passing them on the left... I was stationed in the service in Hawaii during the early 70's and the base I was at had a long entrance road that carried a 40 MPH speed limit. It was totally flat and straight so alot of guys liked to push it a bit going down that road and as a result, the MP's watched it VERY closely. There are two stories here, neither of which involve any BMW's. 1. One day a guy on a 12-speed bike was ticketed for going 50 on this road. It was the first time I ever heard of anyone on a bike getting a ticket. 2. Much more serious. An MP tried to pull over a car on base but the driver was carrying a substance that was "less than legal" and it would've meant big trouble for him if caught. He rabbited and headed down the access road toward civilian land and safety. The pursuing MP radioed ahead and told the gate guard to "stop the guy" when he got to the gate. The gate guard stepped out into the road, raised his Govt. issue Colt Model 1911A1 .45 Cal. pistol and when the car got close enough, fired his weapon. His aim was perfect and he caught the driver in the face with one round killing him instantly. The car careened out of control, through the base entrance and out into the town on the other sided where it struck a house. No one in the house was injured. In the investigation that followed, it was discovered that there were wide spread problems with the base MP's abusing their power and the CO was forced to resign. The "beat" MP's all lost their side arms for a lengthy period and everything returned to as normal as the military ever gets. I'm sure there were lawsuits up the wazoo but I don't know anymore of the story than that. I warped two sets of rotors with the Greens. Something about them, maybe localized heating or something, but two sets gone in short order. The second set are Balo's from Steve D and I've had them turned and then went back to PBR's. Also, their claim to being "dustless" is "groundless" they dusted almost as badly as stock. - -Kevin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 10:15:14 -0700 From: Steve Albrecht <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Tire dressing Gary Derian added...Make sure to use a q-tip to do the tread grooves :-). Thanks for the compliment Jim. My wife caught me one afternoon under the hood with a handful of Q-tips and a can of Goof-Off. She laughed so hard I thought she was going to have a stroke. I bought some stock in Johnson & Johnson last week (Q-tip manufacturers) because I can see the purchase of those items increasing. My wife's new 540 has the three piece 17" wheels with all those rivets around the rim. Those are going to be a real challenge to keep clean. For another perspective, perhaps we can talk Andrei into telling us about painting and clear coating the frame of his pick-up truck, the one with the supercharger. Steve Albrecht ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001 11:09:07 -0700 From: Michael Andre <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] EBC Green pads I put a fresh set of EBC Greens on my '91 M5 in anticipation of a weekend at Buttonwillow. Street driving impressions: Good initial bite, modest dust on the street, big squeal. The first 250 miles before reaching the track, the dusting was much less than the OEM pads, but there was still a lot of squealing. I took them out once to bevel the edges and add more anti-squeal. Two of us shared the car at the track and did about 350 miles. There was a LOT of dusting at the track, much more than was apparent on three other E34 M5s using OEM pads. This was the first time I ran the turbine wheel covers at the track and I never felt any fading. The combination was better than previous track experiences with OEM pads without turbines. The pads held up well, minimal wear. Now two thousand miles later, squealing is minor and acceptable, dusting is much less than OEM. Would I use them again? Sure. Are there other pads out there that would also be satisfactory for my modest needs? Certainly.
