We are not talking about just any V12 engine here. The questions
here, IMHO, are:

1- How fast would the V12 LMR car lap the Nordschleife?

2 - Would it be feasible for BMW to produce a de-tuned version of
that V12 for the street? How powerful would that be?

Thomas G. Clark said in a recent post...1. One day a guy on a 12-speed
bike was ticketed for going 50 on this road. It was the first time I
ever heard of anyone on a bike getting a ticket.

A friend of mine and I were screaming through Watertown Square (Boston
suburb) one time many years ago, and one of Watertown's finest pulled us
over and gave us speeding tickets for 45 in a 25. The officer was
really angry with us, both for speeding, as well as for laughing
ourselves silly. He was very serious, and we were too stoned at the time
to take _anything_ very seriously. We went to court and the judge
dismissed the case because we were not driving motorized vehicles. The
judge gave us a pretty big smile as we departed the vicinity of the
bench.

Jeff -

Failed NOx with all else in spec suggests high combustion temperatures.
Does your engine have a knock sensor? Has it failed? Is your timing
correctly set?

Of course, if all else is not really in spec, lean mixture becomes a
possibility, etc.

Well, my 535i finally failed an emissions test. I
know this question comes up fairly frequently, so is
there some nice troublshooting info out there that
someone can point me to?

Yes, I had the car nice and hot, and it was the NO
that was high(way out, not just a tiny bit over the
line).

Thanks.

Subject: [uuc] WTB: e36 or e30 M3 (building a track car)

Everyone,
Looking to buy an e36 M3 or an e30 M3 as a second car to turn into a
dedicated (road legal) track car.

I prefer a stock (or very close to stock) e36 M3, preferably a 1995. In a
perfect world, I would prefer a car with a great drivetrain, a decent body,
and a trashed interior.

I would love to be able to consider a lightweight, if one is available for
sale.

The car will be essentially gutted and turned into a dedicated CCA racer,
track car, and OneLap entrant.
I would strongly prefer to do the prep work myself, rather than purchasing a
pre-modified track car.

Please contact me if anyone has an appropriate car for sale. I will monitor
follow-up responses here, but direct email response would be preferred.

Thanks!

At 95k I have begun to hear a rattling coming from the location of the vanos
system above 1200 RPM. For those that have had the problem, how long before
replacement/repair is needed? How much time needed and cost for parts and
repairs?

Thanks,

You're surprised? The X5 LM has something like 700 HP and AWD.

There was a great writeup of it in C&D and Automobile and likely every other
car mag a couple of months back.

A fellow at the last driving school I went to (BMW Club of Quebec,
Sanair) was driving a VR6 Corrado and went through the EBC RED ('track')
pads half way through the first day! He went through a second pair
before he had gone through the second day and it was raining!

The layout @ Sanair was sort of a cobbled together road course (part of
an oval, part of a drag strip, some other bits) and was not particularly
hard on brakes...

EBC Suck!!!

YMMV

Subject: [uuc] <WOB> male driver's observation (long statistical rant)

Not my story, but an amusing bunch of statistics that were passed on to me by
a friend. (I think this one originated in California or New York.)

Phil
92 E36/M50
Thankful for the minimal traffic (compared to this anyway) in the FL
panhandle!

A Male Driver's Observation:

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver cut right in
front of a pickup truck causing him to have to drive on to the shoulder to
avoid hitting her. This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his
arm out his window and flipped the woman off.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and
wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic,
and here's why: I drive 48 miles each way every day to work, that's 96 miles
each day. Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper. Most of the
bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway, so if you just look at the 7 lanes
I am not in, that means I pass a new car something like every 40 feet per
lane. That's 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles. That works out to be 982 cars
every mile, or 31,424 cars.

Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper to bumper, I figure I pass
at least another 4000 cars. That brings the number to something like 36,000
cars I pass every day. Statistically, half of these are driven by females,
that's 18,000.

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 are having the worst day of their
period. That's 642. According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life
as dissatisfying or unrewarding. That's 449. According to the National
Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or
homicide. That's 98. And, 34% describe men as their biggest problem. That's
33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons
and this number is increasing. This means, that EVERY SINGLE DAY I drive
past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her
biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, is having the
worst day of her period, and is armed.

Flip one off?

I think not.

Subject: [uuc] <E34/E24> M5 Vs M6? Comments?

Gruppe:

Paul England and I drove a 100% stock Zinnoberrot 1988
M6, 81k miles, on Wednesday. I was, of course,
comparing it to my 1992 M5 as was Paul, probably.

I must confess I was unimpressed and this is from
someone who is not a power junkie and drives a 1988
325 iS with perfect happiness.

1. The steering seemed a bit inferior to my M5 and I
guess this is from the lower ratio (14.5 vs 13.5?) and
from the lack of servotronic? Comments?

2. The car appears to pivot about a point more
rearward than the M5 does when steering, giving the a
boatlike impression. Any idea why? I was a bit upset
by this and found it the least pleasant thing of all.

3. The suspension appeared to lack stiffness. But at
81k miles should this be so? Perhaps the heavier car
makes for a faster suspension degradation than an E30,
but my 68k-mile M5 is a lot tighter.

4. The transmission was smooth, but the you had to
reach forward for the lever. A bit of an ergonomic
throwback. I found this a little odd, but no doubt a
bent shift lever would fix it easily.

5. Power appeared to be a lot lower than my M5. Could
this be the low-down torque or just the top end? I'm
not sure, but is appeared to be quick, but not rapid.
I've always thought both my 88 iS and my 92 M5 as
being quite rapid.

6. The quality of the interior appeared to be worse
than the E30 88 iS. The plastic bits did not mesh as
well (particularly the bits covering the vertical
panel just below the windscreen. Is this correct or
did I just drive a crappy car?

I'd welcome any comments as I really like the M6 and
am kind of thinking that if some things fall into
place I'd like to dump my 89 iC and take on another
car that will be a little less than perfect so I can
do some mods as wanted (rather than repairs as needed)
to it. My fiancee is tending to the E30 M3 so I'm
thinking E24 M6.

As a matter of interest, Paul England was driving my
M5 post the test-drive when a 1985 Euro 635Csi with
the tag M6GEEK pulled up alongside him. The driver
said he had some recent engine work done and was
putting out 300 HP or so. It appeared to be
Diamantschwarz (though much peeled) and Paul and I
both thought it would look pretty cool in Carbon
Black.

Fun question Neil, I've often wondered what is necessary for the basic
conversion. Note that quite a few folks have done this to 318ti's so
that answers the non-M part.

Now you'd think that if this were just a street/school car and not an
all out racer like those two, you'd want it done to an E36 M3 so you
can have the M3 suspension (frt control arms/offset
bushing/subframe[read easy to install x-brace], rear ///M trailing
arms, larger brakes, etc...) and also so that you're able to run wider
rims/tires. Those two started with M3s, one is a 97 Lux, the other a
95.

I'd hate to find out what those two guys have spent on those cars, they
each weigh about ~2700 lbs. Youssaaahhh!!! :-)

The really impressive thing was the observed top speed of 194 mph!

Most likely the feel of the M6 would improve greatly if you replaced all the
bushings, springs, and dampers with stock units. Sitting still on the
suspension as much as that car had to with the low mileage puts a constant
load on everything in one direction which tends to leave a lasting
impression. If you ever want to feel a really nimble 6-series I'd invite
you to hook a ride with one Dwight Derr in his 633i. He's gone way past
stock replacement parts though.

As for the feeling of speed, that can be a factor of both the slack
suspension and the seats. I once drove an 840i and thought it was sluggish
until I watched the speedo. The suspension and seat just absorbed the
feeling of being pinned in the seat. Of course the motor probably could use
some TLC.

Geeeze
