My rims are actually RGQ's, not RGR's. Message should read as follows: I would like to sell a set of 4 17" RD Sport RGQ rims. The rims are mounted with Bridgestone S-02's 235/45/ZR17's. The tires have only about 3,000 miles on them and are barely "scrubbed". They are fitted for the e34 and I previously used them on my M5. Here's the catch: at least one, and possibly two, of the rims are bent, but fixable according to my local tire ship. I'm located in Westport, CT, and will accept any reasonable offer. Or specifically constructive inputs regarding shocks for this vehicle. The more I drive my 528i (OBMW Content) , the less I drive the family Voyager. (That's the good news). However while fully aware that the comparison is way beyond apples to oranges, and consciously driving the Voyager differently (i.e. notably conservatively - more precious "cargo" than just me in the E39), and the more miles the Voyager accumulates ( just over 50K) the more I feel like the thing is gonna roll over on me every time I depart "straight and level" at any speed over 5 mph. (That's the not so good news). I am thinking it is time for replaceing the original OEM shocks. What are/who makes good quality shocks/struts for such a beast ? I don't seek a necessarily more "sporty" ride, just one that is better controlled and wouldn't worry the bejesus out of me all the time. Less body roll would be nice too. This is a Grand Voyager (long wheel base) with the full up stage 3 towing package. thanks. PS - the full up tow package comes with upgraded HD brakes all around(but still drums in back) - I sure would hate to see what the standard brakes are like!!! Has BMW "spoiled" me in automotive expectations ? Probably. Rob has posted some very constructive observations regarding the above vehicles. My limited experience is a '83 and then a '86 528e, and now a '00 528i - all with the "same" engine and 5 speed stick. NIGHT AND DAY Don't misunderstand me, the '83 was my first BMW, used hard put away somewhat wet by previous owners. Similarly for the '86. As with Don, I worked hard to make them "perfect" for their next owner. Unfortunately the '83 was "KIA". The '86 now belongs to #2 son (spoiled HIM for life on automotive expectations!:-) ) Anyway - the advances between the E28 and E39 chassis are dramatic to say the least. The E28 is a good car - but the advances in structure, materials, suspension etc. in the E39 make a WHALE of a difference. I recall reading somewhere that the E39 is 45% or so stiffer in bending and 80% or so stiffer in torsion. That demonstrates out to a car whose ride is incredibly solid, whisper quiet, and smooth without the Detroit "floating ride" handling. So, while I too really admire the 6 series looks - even had a chance to buy one that at initial level of inspection appeared in really clean body and interior shape - I decided that I didn't need to buy '79/80 chassis technology, but should rather save my $ and buy newer advances instead. Don't regret that decision a bit (But I STILL admire the "6" form !) I have to say it was a lot of fun and much better than I expected. They had 5 or 6 AMG Mercedes on the track and you could get a ride with a professional driver in any of them. My friend and I went in the CLK55, the E55 and the ML55. I thought this would be a 50 mph saunter around an oval track, but I was wrong. It was a 100 mph 4 wheel drift around an oval track with cones set up to add some zigs and zags. Although the drivers were obviously driving at about 4/10s, they were still going faster around the turns then I could have. It was a lot more interesting than I expected. Unfortunately, on hot lap only lasts about a minute, so it was over pretty quick. We got there early, though, so lines were real short. Then they had a semi interesting presentation about all their great cars and features. You could choose from their nice buffet lunch while they were impressing you. After lunch/presentation, they had two autocrosses set up in parking lots. One had the C class sedan as well as the yet to be introduced C coupe, along with it's "main competition", as IS300, a 325i, and an A4 2.8. They actually let you go as fast as you wanted around the cones, using what they call "SETs". Someone Else's Tires : ^ ) The other autocross track featured every Mercedes in their lineup except the AMG cars: SL500s, E320 and E430s, SLK320 (with stick), ML320s and ML430s, etc. A couple of us did kinda hot laps, where we made a little more noise than the average Mercedes shopper. People thought when we came back to drop off the cars, we were being "talked to". In fact, the consultants who were manning the auto-x were giving us pointers on how we could be better, smoother, faster! I was quite impressed that Mercedes seemed to go out on a limb with this whole Power Trip marketing exercise, rather than yielding to lawyers and liability insurance hounds. There also was a drawing for a free set of Conti tires and an Olympus camera. Amazingly, the woman who won the camera said she'd rather have won the tires! Now, THAT was surprising : ^ ) Anyway, all in all, a fun way to spend a nice day. I was a little more impressed with the Mercedes than I expected to be, although I still think the ML55 is in the middle of no man's land: not that much fun, and not that useful. But I won't tell that to my neighbor, who just bought one and sold his 1 1/2 year old '00 Carrera 4 with a grand total of 180 miles on it. But that's another story. Comments? Looks, looks, looks ... and fun to drive. That's why I can still smile about my M6 after an engine rebuild (go with a local guy, no matter how good the recommendations are for somebody halfway across the country!!!)and another $6k for various leaks and stuff (partially to fix what the super rebuilder didn't do right). And in a few months I'll need another $2k for a bunch of suspension things as well. I already have the R/D - bilstein setup (previous owner), but other parts are old after 110k miles. If you don't need the 4 doors and useable backseat ... then to me it's simple: go for the M6. Otherwise, the M5 is awesome because it gives you most of what the M6 can, but allows you to have a family as well. Now if there only were an easy way to get off the crappy purple tint (especially without destroying the rear defroster). Comments? Great comments, And RobL, great thoughts also. Owning a E28 535is Dinan Turbo with just about every upgrade known to the E28/E24 series, I believe that my car given the same driver and upgrades to a E34 ///M5 is as fast if not a little faster due to one thing, weight. An E34 ///M5 weighs about 400lbs more than a E28 and about 200lbs more than a E24 ///M6. The only advantage a E34 has is the ability to use much bigger tires. This will allow the E34(with same mods) to accelerate ever so slightly 0-60 and 1/4m time. A E34 can easily put 275mm rears, with a Zmax kit, 300mm rears. An E28 can at best do 255mm rear. The Dinan Stg IV suspension is a wonderful thing, and makes an E28, and a E24 a great handling car. The best bang for buck performance upgrade I've made, even over the turbo system. The Stg IV make the this car so nuetral and smooth it inspires confidence and way fast speeds. Ive only been in an E34 a few times, one was a 535 with Dinan Stg II. My impression was you can really feel the weight of the car. Even then my E28(without turbo, but Stg IV) felt faster in corners, but not straight line. Don't get me wrong, the E34 is a truly modern car, that is a great performer, just a little over weight.
