Guess, I should have looked into this before I assumed that it would be an
easy job, like any other car, hell, even my Porsche was easier than this
looks.

What is the best way to approach this, from the top or the bottom, I have a
5 speed and heard a rumor that it could be done from the bottom, seems like
less stuff to remove, but then again, it is way up there!

What is the best consensus top or bottom, if I go the top route, what other
parts am I going to need, gasket for the intake, nuts?

It is a 1992 M50 non-vanos motor, 325is.

Thanks!

First, make sure they need to be changed. There were two different brands
of Hex bolt used, only one of the two, Ribe, is prone to failure. If you
don't have Ribe bolts, don't touch them.

Second, changing them one at a time is highly unadvisable. The risk of
hydra-locking the cylinder block is extreme. Great care should be taken to
remove all fluid from the bolt holes before installing each new bolt.

Finally, I think you'll find the bolts are E14 or E16.

I did this in my 87 325i a few thousand miles ago, so I can help a little
bit.

In my case, they were in fact Ribe. Out they went. Interestingly enough,
none of mine were broken, but two were looser than I would have liked.
Presumably in the stretch phase prior to breaking.

>Second, changing them one at a time is highly unadvisable. The risk of

I did mine one at a time with no problems. Get a flashlight and look down
the holes. If there is oil or other fluid down there, used some compresed
air and/or brake cleaner to get it out. Get the bolts started by hand.
Thread them down until the sit on the washer and the head. If there is any
fluid in the hole when you put the bolt in you can feel it lock up. If it
does pull it and clean it again. I did mine in the same pattern as tighening
the head bolts. I pulled one and then put the new one in. The first time
around I only tightened them to 22ft/lb. Then, once they are all in, go back
and use the same patern to give them a 90 degree turn, and then go back and
do the second 90. I did mine with an 18 inch breaker bar and a 10 inch
extension. I got the torx sockets at Sears. I think it was $20 for six of
them. Interestingly they weren't Craftsman.

Finally, when you do the 90 degree turn... it is 90 degrees all in one pass.
Doing two 45's. or three 30's isn't the same.

In most cases I would agree with you. That is, until we went looking for a
way to get bigger tires underneath the bodywork of my dad's race. Sure, we
could have gone the CF PTG kit, but if you have that much money, you might
as well just build an E46 GT-R car.

Instead, we went with a fiberglass Zeemax kit, which looks right at home on
the racetrack. On the street, most people find the Zeemax kit flat ugly,
and too much like the Honda boy body kits. But, those same people love the
car at the track. At the last club race at VIR, most agreed that it was
hands down the best looking car in the paddock.

My point? Well, I don't really have one...

If there is a website that lists things to look out for regarding the above
vehicles (528 or 540) would someone be so kind as to point it out to me? I
also accept list opinions as well. (duh!)

I went to Basney Imports in South Bend this weekend, as my wife wants a
newer 5series. We test drove a dark red colored 1999 528i that sure was
nice. Many more neato things than in my 1995 325i.

They also had a Laguna M3 on the lot, which was had a deposit on it, but
something was said about the dealer requiring the car to be on the lot for
six months or something. Regardless, the Laguna was a darker blue than I
had anticipated. The new M5 they had was sure nice to look at up close as
well.

Yow. That is one very nice looking car. However, you should just go ahead
and strike out the part about ITS on that car's race readiness. ITS DOES
NOT ALLOW fender flares and the air dam CANNOT EXTEND BEYOND THE FRONT STOCK
_BODYWORK_ (no, that doesn't say front bumper). Does anybody _read_ the
rules before they go racing?

Jeff says,
Oh yeah.....speaking of speed. I hit Mach 2 in an F4B Phantom, when in the
Navy.....does that count? and 0-650 MPH in 275 feet in a steam catapult
launch off the USS Constellation.....

Jeff

Jeff, we are talkin crappy here . I hit 12 knots in a launch once at the
Charlestown Navy Yard. Anyway after the catapult where was your breakfast?

Uh, Pat, you can't really read it in that picture, but that is his dad's
BMod car. His ITS car, from the pics I've seen, appears to be legal. Not
that anyone cheats in ITS (chip, what chip ;-)

Hey Pat,

I think this car is not the ITS car. Rather if you look closely at the
stickers on the car it says "SPO" and either "BM" or "DM". I had to look
again because I was wondering as well. I recognize Bryan from the CR list
but IIRC he and his dad race at least a couple different cars? So how many
is it now Bryan? ; )

interesting that the bimmer.org message boards got specific mention as part of
one owner's own investigation into his 2x burnin' X5's.

not sure how fresh the story is as it's not dated, but I don't recall seeing it
in AutoWeek last week.

Anythoughts on the following:

V12, failes Ca. emission tests but only at idle with high HC.

For comparison I looked at the '99 results too.

At 2500 rpm

     '99 2001
HC 2 18
CO 0.01 0.01
CO2 14.8 15.4
O2 1.4 0.4

At Idle
     '99 2001
HC 4 443
CO 0.01 0.34
CO2 14.6 15.2
O2 1.5 0.7

Motor has 122k miles but runs perfectly fine. I'm wondering if I have an
injector partially stuck open thus the result at idle but not 2500rpm. How would
a failed or failing fuel pressure regulator exhibit itself in emissions?

Thanks- Kevin

Thanks for your replies on the exhaust hanger P/N (1.5 - 2 weeks ago) and
the additional feedback.

I was in a hurry and feeling miserly, so I only picked up the hangers -
nothing else (did not lake-test the old fasteners, sorry). Local dealer told
me $35.25 each on the phone, then was going to bill me ~$50 each at the
counter! I said something about it and they printed a new bill -- $35.25
each. I installed them the morning before driver's school at Putnam Park.
They are kinda stressed under there (explains the rips in the original
ones?) but work great regardless. I tried loosening everything and then
snugging it back up, but couldn't seem to relieve the tension.

Now chasing a different sort of subtle but relatively new noise/vibration
felt in the steering wheel and shift knob (car not moving, out of gear) at
about 1100rpm. Neil Deshpande thinks maybe engine/tranny mounts. Tranny
look OK. Engine mounts are suspect.
