Here's an update on Fox buying/taking full control
of Speedvision. The full article appears on
adweek.com. I don't know if there's anything
new here, or if it's just confirmation of what has
already been reported:

"In a related development, once Fox finalizes its
acquisition of Speedvision in August, it plans to
program the cable network heavily with NASCAR
content,
and is even contemplating working NASCAR into the
network's name. Fox cable execs are also talking
about
creating a unified sales team to sell NASCAR across
FX, Fox Sports Net and Speedvision, rather than
having
each unit's sales team sell against one
another. "We're still pondering what we're going to
do," said David Hill, chairman and CEO of Fox
 Sports. "

when this was brought up originally a while back I thought about mentioning it,
but didn't. now that's it's a reality I will.

has anyone looked to see how much air time on Speedvision is currently devoted
to boats, airplanes or infomercials for car companies ?? would we really lose
out that much if these programs were replaced by NASCAR stuff ??

there would still be time for all the Legends of Motorsport shows & the F1 &
Bike racing coverage, just less time for the propeller crowd.

if nothing else if the channel kept current F1 coverage & added NASCAR I'd bet
that there would be a lot more local cable companies who added NASCARvision to
their line-up.

enjoys current Speedvision, but wishes there wasn't so much boating & flying on

Subject: [uuc] '01 M5 Oil Change

Posting a question for my brother.

He has an '01 M5 with about 3500 miles on it. He wants to know if he
should change the oil now, or wait until the lights tell him to do it. I'm
not sure if there is any service that is supposed to remove the break in
oil and replace it, or if the first oil change is at the factory interval.
I do recall that when we asked the ///M engineer at the M5 Driving
Experience how often he changed the oil in his car, he said every 3000
miles with Mobil 1. So what have the M5 owners on this list been doing,
and when did you change the oil for the first time? I told him he should
call the dealer and ask them, and that if he wanted to be really safe that
he should spend the $50 to change it himself since he did spend 80 large on
the damn thing.

While I don't receive Speedvision, I have a freind that does. We both
enjoy watching the boating shows, so I wouldn't want that programming
eliminated.

Now the aviation stuff...

Nice tip. There's a Batteries Plus near me and they have the big battery
for my '95 525 for only $88 with their free install! They'll be there until
8:00 tonight so I might have a new battery this evening (before this one
dies - it appears to be original).

Subject: [uuc] <E34> HVAC fan resistor

My '94 530iT's HVAC fan was only working on high, so I figured the resistor
went out. I ordered a new sword and microfilter from Eurasian. The
microfilter replacement was just fine, but the sword was not the same as the
replacement one I ordered.

I got a "limit switch" (pn 64 11 1 468 413 $259 list price -- $149 from
Eurasian -- pic available at
http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Maintenance/Electrical/Data/Sword.jpg)

The resistor that was in the car is the "uncoded control unit" (pn 64 11 8
367 951 -- listing for $ 779.32 -- pic available at
http://216.97.77.38/Images/Menu3/Menu38/SwordTracks.jpg (thanks, Neil!)

Has anyone else had to replace their uncoded control unit? Is there any way
to fix it, or should I just get used to the no air/gale force conditions I've
been living with for the past few weeks?

It sure was a lot cheaper to replace the resistor on my old 325iX :o]

Subject: Re: [uuc] '01 M5 Oil Change

when asking around about various grades of BMW synth oil at the dealer, they
told me that only the early E39 M5's came with the special wierd grade - 5W-60
or something like that - oil & that later ones didn't call for it. per them
there is only a single grade of BMW synth currently. around here the CCA
discount makes the BMW oil a pretty good deal at around $3/qt.

I thought that a 1,200 mile service was required for the new M5's as well, but
perhaps this is no longer the case with the '01 cars. I'm sure that it was for
the '00 cars - maybe they did it to get early information on the cars when they
were first introduced.

one of the Windy City members has what he was told by BMW is the highest mileage
E39 M5 int he world - ~48k on it as of a month ago. he said BMW calls him
personally to see how the car is doing.

Sent in my deposit for our new 2002 M3 'vert today. We are going to have to come up
with tax and destination charges later, and this, combined with Oregon weather, may
lead me to just take cash instead. Since we have a 533 I figure I will be like the
old farmer who won the lottery - when asked what he was going to do with his winnings
he replied that he reckoned he would just keep farming till the money ran out. Maybe
I'll just keep the 533 propped up until the money runs out. Or maybe a little 325is
would be nice...A little black Harold and Maude-mobile? hmmm...

This from a guy who doesn't play the lottery and has just enough math skills to think
gambling is silly. My pursed lip Puritanical Scots genes would be ts'sking if they
didn't enjoy Bimmeriding along with the rest of me.

Ok. Ye old rack is leaking away and I guess I am going to replace it with a
rebuild as opposed to trying to redo the seals.

I notice that alloembmwparts lists two part numbers for the e30 racks. I
have:

32 13 1 469 965 which is the ZF unit for $374 w/ $275 core charge

- -and-

32 13 1 469 385 which is the Mavel unit for $236 w/ $155 core charge

- -and-

32 13 1 469 385 which is the ZF unit for $239 w/ $275 core charge

so what is the last one? a Mavel unit rebuilt by ZF?

I would be tempted to do the e36 rack conversion, except that I would have
to eat the core charge and this little project would go over $600. The local
yard also doesn't have any e36's. Only e30's

Subject: [uuc] E36 Sport Seat Back Problem(s)

I recently purchased sight unseen a couple of '97 M3/4 seats. After
noticing the driver's seat back was twisted to the right, I tore down both
seat backs. Sure 'nuff, the driver's seat back will have to be replaced due
to either shipping or collision damage. However, one odd thing I noticed is
that the bolster parts of both frames are not symmetrical. On both seats
the right bolster "wing" is bent out further than the left.

Has anyone noticed this before in BMW seat backs? Shouldn't the bolsters be
symmetrical? I'm sure the seller, a reputable BMW recycling business, will
make good. Pix online at:

Subject: [uuc] RE: uuc] Opinions on 1997-1999 5series

John, a potential E39 convert asked:

>vehicles (528 or 540) would someone be so kind as to point it out to me? I
>also accept list opinions as well. (duh!)

OK.. there are a number of E39 websites around, but don't know any
that give specifics to look for..

As a hint:

1. Warranty/BMW-campaign items - if this is a dealer - have them pull up the
BMW-NA records on the computer and PRINT them out for you. It should have
details of any open campaigns/recalls on the car..

2. If this was the servicing dealer - you want to see ALL the service
records. Every dealer I've asked for this from has been cooperative
provided you suggest they obliterate the former-owners name. (And I've
even gotten this info on my E39 from a dealer I didn't buy the car
from).

Look for regular service. Items offhand I can think of that may have
been campaigns:

1. Camshaft-sensor (sound familiar? - most M5x engine seem to have
gotten this one). Causes rough running.

2. Auto-tranny selector-switch on certain range of vehicles.. would
indicate the wrong gear on the dash

Stuff I know would be covered under warranty if the car still is under
it (having the TIS is really handy!)

1. Weak radio - early antenna amps - lots were replaced

2. Dead spots in the central-instrument display panel (right in
the center of the instrument cluster - the one that is fed by the
odometer and OBC)

3. Steering wheel tilt motor, and seat-memory errors.. updated motor
on the tilter and new module (switch assembly) for the seat controls.

4. Thermostat - typically fails open. New design one replaces the
one that fail..

All the above seem to be covered under BMW campaigns IF the customer
experiences the problem.

Things I've seen from watching the www.bimmer.org E39 forum (currently
over-run by youngsters - less than 30 year olds - slamming their E39..
they seem to have run outta Hondas.. or are moving upmarket):

Catalytic converter failures on the 540's.. have seen mention of quite
a few premature failures (30k or so..) covered under warranty. Doesn't
appear to be a problem on the 528i..

Air-bag-warning light - comes on due to failure of either a seat-belt
latch assembly, or the pressure mat in one of the seats.. what was
mentioned in one posting was that it can often be fixed by checking
the wiring box going into the seat.. there are failures in this box
(fixable with soldering) that show up as actual component failures,
but really aren't - replacing the component alters the box enough to
clear the fault, but an unnecessary component has been replaced..

>I went to Basney Imports in South Bend this weekend, as my wife wants a
>newer 5series. We test drove a dark red colored 1999 528i that sure was
>nice. Many more neato things than in my 1995 325i.

Yup. And most of them even work :-) Even work kinda like you expect,
which is even more amazing..

Oh - one disappointment with the E39 - sound system sucks. AM reception
is plain crappy, and FM not far behind. The CD and tape player are OK..
and to get a current model DIGITAL phone in it will cost you $500 BMW
bucks.. (before installation.. which isn't hard..)

So far my experience with a used '98 528i has been a delight.. the
former owner went a bit over his lease milage (about 32k over) so
I got the car for what I consider a VERY good price ($10k less than
the commonly used - and inflated - book prices).. have had it for
about 2.5 months /4k miles - and have NO problems with it. Well.. one
problem. The tilt/wheel failed to respond once when I put the key in..
in reading the CIS - it appears that this can be caused by hitting the
tilt-wheel lever with your knee when getting out. A reboot of the system,
which consisted of leaving the car off for 15 minutes - solved the problem.
The other real pleasure of the car is the ease of working on it - it's
lots better than the E34 - most things are simple to get at and easy
to disassemble (I usually disassemble most of a used car when I get it
just to see how it goes together.. :-)

Nice cars.. I suspect a few other owners will tell you the same thing.
