Castrol RS 10W-60 synthetic was specified with S62 engines built up until the spring of 2000. Subsequent engines call for the usual BMW 5W-30 synthetic. Rumor was that they changed the piston rings and/or pistons to be less like those in the full-race engine designs. There's an "oops" sticker (calling for BMW 5W-30 synthetic) over the oil specification page in the manual of my brand new M5. There has always been a 1200 mile break-in service, but the engine oil and filter is not (and has not been) on the list for US cars. They do replace the diff and tran oil, though. The engines are supposedly run in before leaving the plant, and then the oil is changed out. Some have reported that European M5s also get the engine oil changed at this service. I'm with Shane's brother, though, and will be changing the oil and filter at about 1200 miles. Not covered by the full maintenance plan, of course, unless I can get the green lights to all go out... - --Jonathan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 12:53:34 -0700 (PDT) From: david kroth <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Auto levelling headlights (Xenon, HID) >From the bmwusa website: "Because of their more intense illumination, Xenon headlights must be aimed correctly to avoid undue glare to oncoming traffic. I hit 12 knots in a launch once at the Charlestown Navy Yard. Anyway after the catapult where was your breakfast? TR TR 12 knots? Were you launching a dingy or a sunfish sailboat? Hell, you could drop it over the side of the carrier and hit a faster speed than that before it hit the water. The breakfast was fine on launch - It was the hitting the arresting wire and the negative G's stopping you at landing that made the tummy queasy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Jun 2001 15:38:24 -0700 From: Dietrich Schultz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Speed III (the sequel) At 02:50 PM 6/25/01, you wrote: >Jeff says, >Oh yeah.....speaking of speed. Not to nitpick or anything, but 0-650 mph in 275 ft? Assuming linear acceleration I think that's somewhere around 51g's. Don't these catapults launch at something less than 200 mph? (Still, impressive, to be sure.) Your car does not have a "sword". It has a blower resistor, PN 64 11 8 391 699. The "resistor" in your second picture is the IHKA control unit. It has little to do with the fan. The "sword" mounts in the small plastic cover that you remove to change your microfilter. The resistor that you actually need is on the other side of the heater box, just above the throttle pedal. - --------------------------- Now offering BMW special tool rental and pay per incident tech help. - --------------------------- Brett Anderson www.koalamotorsport.com Home of the E30 M3 CD-ROM repair manual > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [uuc] <E34> HVAC fan resistor > > My '94 530iT's HVAC fan was only working on high, so I figured the resistor > went out. Rack confusion... The 965 is pre air bag. The 385 is air bag. It would appear that "Mavel" rebuilds the 385 rack as an option to a genuine ZF rack. I know where my money would be going, especially considering there is only a $3 difference. The racks are interchangeable, best story I've heard so far for a different air bag rack is that the air bag created a megaphone effect from the column harmonics. The rack was slightly redesigned to prevent noise traveling upwards. I've also heard there are possible safety issues with a non air bag rack in an air bag car, so to play it safe, my recommendation would be go with the ZF 385 rack, even if you don't have an air bag. - --------------------------- Now offering BMW special tool rental and pay per incident tech help. - --------------------------- Brett Anderson www.koalamotorsport.com Home of the E30 M3 CD-ROM repair manual > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [uuc] Oy! Our E28 is lovely on the track, light on its feet and nicely balanced. But on real-world streets, it's a real handful to keep pointed straight down the road. Especially on badly rutted streets, it's always trying to climb up one side or the other. It really wants to dart into the next lane. During a lane change, you feel each part of the transition as a change in the steering forces and the balance of the car, not as just a smooth shift from one straight line to another. This extreme tramlining is irritating and distracting, and sometimes almost dangerous because it's surprising if you're not paying attention to the road surface ahead. Our E30 is nice on the track, but it has pleasant road manners as well. We'd like the luxo-barge to behave as nicely as the coupe. Might this be an alignment problem? Specifically, would this behavior be caused by too much front end toe-out? I don't know its current alignment numbers because we haven't had that checked since we got it, but if it's as simple to fix as adding some toe-in, I'd sure like to try! We could lose a lot. What I fear most is the loss of Speedvision Cup, Brit and Aussie Touring Cars, ALMS, full coverage of 12 and 24 hour races, motorcycle racing, SCCA runoffs, etc. Many of those events take place on a NASCAR weekend. If Speedvision becomes NASCARvision, what do you think is going to get the heave-ho: the massive NASCAR marketing machine, or the .5% as large hard core road race market? All the boating and airplane shows generally don't air in a time slot to conflict with the NASCAR races. My guess is we'll get a lot more Hot Rod TV and fishing shows along with 18 hours of coverage for every NASCAR race to include pre-qualifying hype, qualifying, post qualifying interviews, pre-race hype, the race, post race coverage for at least an hour, a replay of the race or two, and ten 1/2 hour shows during the week with NASCAR highlights. And there are three F1 races that conflict directly with NASCAR: Brazil, Canada, and the USGP. Brazil was a direct conflict with the Harrah's 500 from Texas. Canada competes directly with the K-Mart 500 from Michigan. And NASCAR didn't even have the courtesy not to schedule a daytime race the day of the USGP at Indy: the Kansas 500 is on at the same time and date. Certainly, FOX will move the NASCAR schedule around to have a night race or something the day of the USGP next year, but Bernie isn't going to move sh*t for NASCAR. That brings about the question of whether Bernie will even give the US TV contract to Speedvision at all if they refuse to air all the races live! I don't think anything's a certainty if NASCARvision doesn't promise Bernie and his traveling circus top billing. >there would still be time for all the Legends of Motorsport shows & the F1 & >Bike racing coverage, just less time for the propeller crowd. I hope so, but you have to make time for the ten 1/2 hour NASCAR highlight package shows... and don't think FOX won't latch on to that money machine because it feels some duty to maintain Speedvision's high standards. >if nothing else if the channel kept current F1 coverage & added NASCAR I'd bet >that there would be a lot more local cable companies who added NASCARvision to >their line-up. True. And I hope some visionary at FOX proves me wrong and maybe, just maybe, a few NASCAR fans will discover that Touring Car and other road racing ROCKS!! But there will be conflicts with some of these lesser road racing series and something will get the axe. Forget the 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning stuff - what racing series won't be back or will be severely curtailed?? And if F1 jumps to another network, will the coverage be as good and complete (Friday practice, live qualifying) as Speedvison's? I don't get a warm fuzzy about any of it. - -- Ron Katona ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #3925 *************************** ________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Camptown Automotive - http://www.camptownauto.com | Circle Tire Co.
