When this has been discussed in the past a few variables popped up. If your
current tires are getting near the end of their lives that can help cause
this. New tires can fix it though sometimes you have to also change tire
brands to be successful. Wider wheels or wheels with a new spacer or
different offset can contribute too.

My experience came from replacing nearly dead Dumflop D40M2 tires on my '91
M5 with brand new Pirelli P7000SS tires. Where the car could barely be
controlled before, I could release the wheel and track straight with the new
rubber. Brand or newness I don't know.

Pre-March 2000 built M5s (approximately) like mine use
10W60 Castrol Racing synthetic. Post-March 2000 built
M5s use the regular 5W30 BMW synthetic.

The 1200 mile service calls for changing the
differential and transmission oils, but not the engine
oil.

If you go by the service interval indicator lights, it
will be a very long time before BMW pays for the
"scheduled" oil change. My first "light-scheduled"
oil change came up at over 13,000 miles, and the
second one was called for past 26,000 miles. But I
had the oil changed at my expense, without resetting
the lights, at about 2,000 miles and roughly every
3,000 miles since then. Expensive, and probably
unnecessary, but cheaper than a new engine.

My '91 318is is showing its age in the driver seat bottom cushion - the
material (grey cloth) is starting to fray. I wonder if it's possible to
switch the bottom cushion with the passenger one; or perhaps switch the
entire bottom of the seat, bolsters and all without disturbing the seat
adjustment mechanisms. Anyone do this or know if it's possible?

Thanks.

I am contemplating Having a 3" Cat-Back piping installed on my E39 I6. Thus
eliminating the large resonator and replacing the OEM muffler. What
performance gains can I expect with this mod, considering the already
efficient BMW OEM exhaust? I understand there may not be many without an
OBD-II flash upgrade. I plan to get sharked as soon as it's available for
the Dual VaNoS M52TU. I currently have just a CAI. All input appreciated.

Thank you.

Joe,
save yourself the stress of making the decision and just call Steve D' at
ultimategarage.com. he will hook you up with the right part, and will make
sure you have all the right brass washers and stuff to connect it up.

and while you are in there, you may want to change the tie rod ends too.
racks don't come with them normally.

very happy Steve D' customer, no affiliation other than he probably has my

Rusty,

I have used BMW's covers to replace two complete sets of sport seats.
The bottom cover is under $100 and fits either passenger or driver. Once
installed they are no longer ambidextrous because holes are punched in
the side covers for the mechanism.

Check out the BMW website for more info on the new E65 7 series:

http://www.bmw.com/bwme/products

Click on the top banner with the picture of the new 7 and the words "The
BMW 7 Series". It kind of looks like a cross between an Audi (the Dove
soap bar look) and the Volvo S80 (the coupe-like rear from the C pillar
back). The inside has lots of cool gadgets. My favorite feature: rear
seats with side bolsters! Hopefully that indicates the new 7's still true
to the BMW driving tradition.

Do they offer these covers in leater? My driverside seat is in good shape
except for the bottom.

Subject: [uuc] Rotating & unsprung weight - how significant?

I understand that the less unsprung rotating weight (wheels/tires) you
can have the better, but on something less than an open wheel'd formula car
how significant a difference can be felt or measured but reducing this
weight?
I have heard so many different numbers for rotating vs. static weight but
the number that comes up most often is 4 times, as in saving one pound off
your wheel is like taking four pounds out of the car. Obviously it would
depend if the weight from the wheel was taken from the center area or the
outer rim but you get the idea.
So has anyone ever done a back to back test of either acceleration (0-60,
1/4 mile) or handling (auto-x, lap times) on the same car but with heavy and
light wheels? I can't name a (larger, not Miata or Type R) high performance
car that comes from the factory with a wheel under 20lbs, so are we all
being overly freakish trying to get sub 20lb wheels for our street/track
BMW's?

Thanks,
Rob

They offer them in all cover materials, but as I recall, the leather
ones were selling out quickly.

For instance, the Natur leather ones for E28 sedans (which really means
US M5s) sold out over a year and a half ago. A complete set of late E30
Natur cloth were still available a month ago. More comfort seat covers
are available than sport seat covers.

I use Maximillian Importing Company (Roundel advertiser), and Russel
BMW, my local dealer.

Now if I can just get those cloth sport seats for the E32 . . .

Check the condition of your control arms. My severe tramlining all-but
disappeared with new upper and lower control arms installed. The ball
joints had a small amount of play, but given their position near the pivot
point of the steer wheels, a little slop goes a long way.

I think the little bit of tramlining that remains is in the tires.

Here's a pretty fundamental question that surely someone out there can help
with...

Our E28 is lovely on the track, light on its feet and nicely balanced. But
on real-world streets, it's a real handful to keep pointed straight down the
road. Especially on badly rutted streets, it's always trying to climb up
one side or the other. It really wants to dart into the next lane. During
a lane change, you feel each part of the transition as a change in the
steering forces and the balance of the car, not as just a smooth shift from
one straight line to another.

This extreme tramlining is irritating and distracting, and sometimes almost
dangerous because it's surprising if you're not paying attention to the road
surface ahead. Our E30 is nice on the track, but it has pleasant road
manners as well. We'd like the luxo-barge to behave as nicely as the coupe.

Might this be an alignment problem? Specifically, would this behavior be
caused by too much front end toe-out? I don't know its current alignment
numbers because we haven't had that checked since we got it, but if it's as
simple to fix as adding some toe-in, I'd sure like to try!

(The suspension setup includes Bilstein Sport shocks, Eibach pro-kit
springs, E28M5 7.5x16 wheels, Dunlop SP8000 225/50-16 tires.)
