That doesn't look like what I would picture as a resistor block but you
never know. Almost anything can be fixed by someone. At those prices
I'd look around.

Yes and yes.

It almost sounds as if an alignment was never done to reset the toe after
the suspension was lowered.

David, I get your drift but I think it only compensates
in a certain degree range. Say +/-10? Or perhaps it has a rate of
change algorithm it goes by so it will adjust "up" as you go up
a hill but will level back out if that grade remains constant.
Same for down. Simple math I would think. I am pretty sure
we only sell the bulbs and maybe some assemblies but I'll
poke around if you like. Or I can ask the BMW group I know.
Hard to tell who works on what part over there.

It could be an injector stuck open or it could just be worn
injectors (at low RPMs worn injectors don't have as nice of
pattern and the fuel does not burn as efficiently). I have
had many BMWs start to fail the CA idle test when the
injectors get old. When I was younger (and had more free
time) I got to try a lot of different things to pass when
Smog Pros had the "Pass or Don't Pay" policy.

Three ways to pass are:

1. Raise the idle as high as you can (don't get it real high
since you will fail if the idle is too high). I can pull an
E24 or E28 ICV in my sleep but I have no idea how to play
with a V12 idle.

2. You can try to pull the connection to one of the fuel
injectors before taking it in (cover the connection with
tape and plug it back in). With no fuel in one cyl the
piston will just pump air out the exhaust. With a V12 you
may get away with pulling the wires to a couple injectors.

3. Drill a small hole in the FRONT of the muffler a little
bigger
than the size of an ice pick. This creates a venturi effect
sucking fresh air in the muffler greatly diluting the amount
of crap that's going out the tail pipe. When done, either
spot weld the holes shut or you can use a sheet metal screw
to fill the hole.

Good Luck,

What's this V12 in? An X5 :-) or an 850?
Got any photos? I love that car...

My wife's Mercedes '00 E320 has them and they are noticeable just through
normal accelerating and braking. You can see them quickly adjust to the new
setting and settle in. It is most noticeable when there is a wall or
something in front of you, but you can also see it on the road.

Never mind. I re-re-checked the driver's side of the console, and found the
good old fashioned (cheap) resistor unit. I'm not sure whether I was blind or
stupid the first two times I looked.

Oh well -- anybody need a nice new sword? :)

Drew Zacharda

<someone claiming to be me wrote:>

My '94 530iT's HVAC fan was only working on high, so I figured the resistor
went out. I ordered a new sword and microfilter from Eurasian. The
microfilter replacement was just fine, but the sword was not the same as the
replacement one I ordered.

I got a "limit switch" (pn 64 11 1 468 413 $259 list price -- $149 from
Eurasian -- pic available at
http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Maintenance/Electrical/Data/Sword.jpg)

The resistor that was in the car is the "uncoded control unit" (pn 64 11 8
367 951 -- listing for $ 779.32 -- pic available at
http://216.97.77.38/Images/Menu3/Menu38/SwordTracks.jpg (thanks, Neil!)

Has anyone else had to replace their uncoded control unit? Is there any way
to fix it, or should I just get used to the no air/gale force conditions I've
been living with for the past few weeks?

It sure was a lot cheaper to replace the resistor on my old 325iX :o]

Thanks in advance,

Andre:

Nice link! I like the looks and the fact that the
proportions make it look even smaller than the E38
non-L looks. I have a feeling it is going to handle
even better. Good thing it looks nice as the E38 will
then drop in price so that I can get one. The 740i
Sport really rocks!

10W-60 Castrol RS as previously noted.

Supposedly this is 1999 and 2000 production through 2/00, sometime in March
they changed to the new spec, there are a couple 2000 owners whose cars are
reputedly built post-3/00 whose cars still are stickered for 10W-60. Mine
is 3/00 production and is stickered for 5W-30.

And if you do Euro Delivery and take your car to a Euro BMW dealer for its
2000km service, it'll get an oil change, and it'll probably get 10W-60 no
matter when it was built as the German BMW dealers believe this is the
proper fill for all E39 M5s.

John (currently full of 10W-30 Amsoil - the car, not me.)

I think if you crank up the catapult to 50000 lb or so for throwing a
Phantom, and hooked up an E21 instead, it might hit 650mph before it goes
into the drink...

Realistically, I don't think the mechanicals can move that fast. Based on
no real accurate information, I think 140kt of actual catapult-induced
speed @ 55000lb is probably more like it.

John.
