What do you guys think of the the recent direction of BMW car design? IMHO BMW has lost its way design wise. Having been a lifelong BMW fan, I feel compelled to express my disappointment at recent designs. Saying that they don't stand out is an understatement. E46, Z3, Z8, Z9 (uugggh!) models can't hold a candle to the classic and elegant 2002, E30, E28 and E24. Has any body seen piccies of the new 7 series? Hmmmm, not sure about the front end treatment. Many E30 M3 owners can definitely tell a difference when they switch from the stock 15" alloys (which are quite light) to a 20+lb 17" wheel. All of that extra weight is near the outer circumference, so that requires more force to accelerate. I did notice a slight difference in acceleration when I went from stock to E28 M5 wheels on my M3. The M5 wheels are only 19lbs, but that's about a 2-3lb difference, all on the outer circumference. This is also the exact reason why a lighter flywheel will help acceleration. The engine doesn't make more torque, it is only able to apply more of that torque to the drive wheels, instead of applying a larger amount of torque just to accelerate the flywheel. Unsprung mass has a lot to do with tuning dampers and springs. All I know is that less is better. If you are on a bumpy road with lots of unsprung mass on your suspension (heavy wheels, tires, brakes), the tire spends less time in contact with the pavement because the mass is fighting the spring's force. The spring is trying to push it back down to the ground, but more mass takes more force. With a spring, more force = more distance, so the suspension gets compressed more. Also, when the tire hits a steep bump, the extra mass requires more force to accelerate upward. This compresses the tire more, and is one of the reasons (obviously not the main reason) why you can bend 17" wheels more easily. Another reason is that many cheap 17" wheels are just that-cheap. Mille Miglias are some of the heaviest wheels out there. For the amount of work required, I'd not want to be swapping it side to side, but replacing it outright. The cloth, lower section, which includes both lower side bolsters, from BMW is less than $175. To me the new styling of the Z3, E46, etc. looks too rounded and "soft" and the droopy headlight treatment looks goofy.
