What do you guys think of the the recent direction of
BMW car design?

IMHO BMW has lost its way design wise. Having been a
lifelong BMW fan, I feel compelled to express my
disappointment at recent designs. Saying that they
don't stand out is an understatement. E46, Z3, Z8, Z9
(uugggh!) models can't hold a candle to the classic
and elegant 2002, E30, E28 and E24. Has any body seen
piccies of the new 7 series? Hmmmm, not sure about the
front end treatment. 

In this respect (design) Mercedes has got BMW beat. 

C'mon Chris, get your act together!

Many E30 M3 owners can definitely tell a difference when they switch
from the stock 15" alloys (which are quite light) to a 20+lb 17"
wheel.  All of that extra weight is near the outer circumference, so
that requires more force to accelerate.  I did notice a slight
difference in acceleration when I went from stock to E28 M5 wheels on
my M3.  The M5 wheels are only 19lbs, but that's about a 2-3lb
difference, all on the outer circumference.

This is also the exact reason why a lighter flywheel will help
acceleration.  The engine doesn't make more torque, it is only able
to apply more of that torque to the drive wheels, instead of applying
a larger amount of torque just to accelerate the flywheel.

Unsprung mass has a lot to do with tuning dampers and springs.  All I
know is that less is better.  If you are on a bumpy road with lots of
unsprung mass on your suspension (heavy wheels, tires, brakes), the
tire spends less time in contact with the pavement because the mass
is fighting the spring's force.  The spring is trying to push it back
down to the ground, but more mass takes more force.  With a spring,
more force = more distance, so the suspension gets compressed more. 
Also, when the tire hits a steep bump, the extra mass requires more
force to accelerate upward.  This compresses the tire more, and is
one of the reasons (obviously not the main reason) why you can bend
17" wheels more easily.  Another reason is that many cheap 17" wheels
are just that-cheap.  Mille Miglias are some of the heaviest wheels
out there.  Check this webpage out:

extremely limited for this model year & likely next - for 2001MY w/S54 engine
it's $45,635 (incl destination)

only options are :
tilting glass roof (adds head/helmet room & interior heat) - $300
CD head unit (allows you to truly experience the crappiness of the stock radio)
- - $200

unless you're obsessed with the S54 engine, buying a '99 with ~20k miles for
$30k sounds like a much better deal to me.  add a supercharger later if you have
to have the extra power.

When my dealer did this under warranty a while back, it was from the top.
I've heard of it being done from the bottom too, but that seems not to be
the official method.

If you go the top route, at a very minimum you'll need qty 6 of the intake
manifold gaskets, P/N 11 61 1 717 259

There are various other gaskets and O-rings for the intake manifold and its
sensors which may or may not need replacement, depending on condition:

Profile gasket      11 61 1 716 174
O-ring              11 61 1 730 725
O-ring              11 61 1 735 859
Gasket ring         11 61 1 735 735

Since your car is older, it would seem prudent to replace them all. They
shouldn't be too expensive.

To remove the lower cushion from a sport seat requires TOTALLY dismantling
the seat.

For the amount of work required, I'd not want to be swapping it side to
side, but replacing it outright.

The cloth, lower section, which includes both lower side bolsters, from BMW
is less than $175.

Your other course of action is to simply swap the seats, but your controls
will be against the console.

In CA (and possibly other places) they measure O2 in addition to the 3 
pollutants. A hole in the exhaust upstream of the sniffer would introduce 
oxygen, which would register on the sniffer. It probably won't pass until 
the source of the excess O2 is found and fixed.

I understand the new 7-series has variable length intake runners and 
variable lift intake valves instead of a traditional throttle (among other 
things). Can anyone shed some light on how this new stuff works? Is the 
length of the intake runners varied with a valve that adds/removes piping 
or is it continuously variable? And if so, how? Are the intake valves still 
cam-operated or is it completely different?

I'm not all that excited about the new styling either, although I'd have 
put the pinnacle at the E36 (ok, and the E9). To me the new styling of the 
Z3, E46, etc. looks too rounded and "soft" and the droopy headlight 
treatment looks goofy. However, while I agree the Benz is getting better 
looking (hey, look where they were coming from!) saying they're ahead of 
BMW is blasphemy. :)
