I decided to buy a "BMW" battery. With a BMWCCA discount it was $113 + tax. The battery is made by Douglas. There is only one BMW dealer in this area and I'm sure that this price can be beat. The price range I found for aftermarket batteries was $80 to $100. The "BMW" battery has a lip on the bottom where the mounting brackets hold the battery and a vent hole at the top/side of the battery for the vent tube. So if you buy aftermarket make sure to buy one with these features. Personal opinions follow. 1800ti/1602/2002: pretty but derivative of the NSU Prinz/Corvair. E3: Best BMW sedan shape yet. E9: Okay, but the E3 sedan is prettier. E12: Also an excellent shape. E21: Boring. Useful, but boring. E23: Not bad for its day, the E3 and E12 were prettier. E24: A nice shape, but doesn't do anything for me. E28: The E12 is prettier. E30: Boring. Useful, but boring. E31: Great shape if it were 20% smaller. E32: Nice shape, not too conservative for its day. E34: Also a nice shape, there's a nice 'family' resemblance here. E36: The first really attractive 3-series shape. E36 ti: Ugly but at least not boring. E36 Z3: Shape aged rapidly, M w/big wheels is okay. E36 Z3 coupe: Ugly but at least not boring. E38: A nice car, but the E32 was a better shape. E39: Best-looking BMW sedan since the E3. E46: A good overall shape but details too 'busy'. E53: For what it is it's not bad. M1: Very nice. Z8: Taillights too small, otherwise it's beautiful. John ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 14:54:10 -0400 From: "Robinson, Lee" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] speed.... If Speedvision > becomes NASCARvision, what do you think is going to get the heave-ho: > the massive NASCAR marketing machine, or the .5% as large hard core road > race market? My guess is Fox is going to leave the actually races, qualifying etc. on Fox/Fox Sports/FX etc. since they have a lot more coverage in terms of number of households, etc., at least for the time being. Hell, Fox already re-boadcasts some races on Fox Sports in some markets as it is (I have the sports package on DTV and get ~35 Fox Sports, along with Speedvision). I think having Speedvision/NASCARvision might help them get more of the races from NBC later and be a one stop NASCAR shop later on. The second half of the season is still on NBC/TNT for the next 8 seasons (including this one). Most likely, we'll get a bunch of the NASCAR Tech/Review/Daily Soap Opera type stuff on Speedvision. At least initially, there probably won't be too much impact to the hard core road racing stuff. If that helps Speedvision stay afloat (couldn't be making much of the vitamin comercials during F1 broadcasts), then great. Some cross-pollination might be good. I remember seeing all the excited emails from NASCAR fans that never even knew about the Daytona 24hrs until Dale was running in it and commenting that they wanted more. That's a good thing. I have the fear, just not that strongly, yet... Trying to stir up hornet's nest? Ok, I'll bite... The last brake job I paid for was about $300 per axle (2 years ago). That was for OEM rotors and after market pads. (This on an 95 325is). I've used OEM rotors, the grooved ATE rotors, and Balo rotors from Steve D'G. In my experience the OEM & ATE rotors were equal (functionally good, but rust quickly) while Balos are better if only because they don't rust as much. I've used a variety of pads and keep coming back to Metal Masters. They produce less dust than the OEM pads, they don't squeal, they feel better on the track, and they're relatively cheap. As for fluid, I'd definitely go with a higher temp fluid like ATE or Motul for the track. You should probably change the fluid before (and possibly after) the track event. Especially if you're not going to change it again for the rest of the year. Fluid is cheap. As for stainless brake lines, the debate about their usefulness in a non-racing environment rages on. I couldn't say. Overall, I think the most important thing for the track is to have fresh brakes, not necessarily the particular brand. 'Course it depends a lot on what kind of driver you are on the track. I personally like the E39 and the E46 (especially the coupe). I've always liked the look of the 7s and even the E3s that came before them. The current 7 series with the Sport Package looks like a million bucks (and better than even the new MB S class in my book) but the new one looks like a first generation Dodge Stratus from the side, especially the trunk area. The Z9 and the X Coupe are just proof that whoever is responsible for those rolling eyesores should be sent back to design school. I'm a firm believer in progress and I do agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but what about the prototype for the 6 series pictured in some car magazine a few weeks ago? What's going on in Munich? One look at an early 70s CS, any year 6 series (Euro bumpers please) and even the unloved 8 series and it becomes even more clear how bad BMW designs have gotten. All the coupes up to now have been objects of art, the future coupes look like art deco gone really bad. I sincerely hope that BMW recovers from these disastrous designs.
