On modern BMWs, the smog pump injects air upstream of the cat only during
warmup AFAIK, which is no time to get a smog check, BTW. This is slightly
different than a hole in the muffler, which doesn't go away after warmup.

Hi Digesters,
having a 96 328 with exhaust nearing end of its
useful life, wondering if anyone has heard, or owned any of the above
(header) exhausts. Are any of them close to the M3 sound, and would
they be as reasonable as far as fittment quality and reasonalbe noise
level (i.e not looking for UUC/BB/Triflo db's). Thanks
John

Before tearing off the head, I would spring for a new oil pressure
sender. I've had one go bad (not on a BMW though).
Seems odd that the head gasket would only leak oil from where it goes
up directly to where it drops back down, without going into the
cylinders or the coolant. (but then, I don't know how close together
those passages are) Also seems unlikely that the leak would be so
large as to drop the pressure in the entire system below the oil light
threshold.

Subject: [uuc] Mobile Tradition NLA Parts Requests (Important!)

Hey Everyone,

I have been corresponding with Mobile Tradition about my concern that they
have stopped offering information on our cars (like they used to) free of
charge, or at least for a nominal fee. Most recently, it has been required to
purchase a Certificate of Authenticity along with the car production date,
etc. for a $90 fee, through BMW Online, etc....you've probably seen the ads.
Very nice, but pricey to just get production information on our cars.

Kai Jacobsen of the Mobile Tradition Historical Archives has informed me just
today that they have reversed their policy to not offer information on our
beloved old Bimmers.

Here is the text of the message I received:

Hello John,

as promised, here is the result of our internal discussion in regard to
informations about cars and motorcycles.

In regard to possible complaints and due to the fact that in the end we don't
want to force someone to buy the Certificate just to get information about a
vehicle, I can tell you that we will proceed in the future as follows:

Those people, who don't need or want something elaborate, which one can also
hang up the wall, like the Certificate, will get information about their
automobile or motorcycle for free, if they send an email or call.

Those owners, who need production date and delivery information to get their
vehicle registered or to get new registration papers, will get a so-called
"Herstellerbescheinigung" on BMW Mobile Tradition letterhead, and this will
cost Euro 25,--, which is about US $ 23.

I hope you can see that this will again be customer-friendly and that we are
interested in providing a perfect service.

What we cannot change is the price and the way to order Certificates for US
customers.

Yours sincerely
BMW Mobile Tradition
Historical Archives

As you can see, they are indeed attempting to help us out and remain loyal to
"the '02 Faithful"!!!

For discussions and requests about reproducing those NLA parts Kai gave me
the e-mail of the person in charge of production of those spare parts for our
"beloved" 2002's!!!

His name is Georg Blumoser ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

So, let's let George know what we would like to see put back into
production....if we get enough interest and it's profitable, I'll bet they
will try to help us out.

Let me be the first to order my new early style dashboard ...no
cracks...yeah!!!!! Then there's those plastic tii intake runners<g>, and door
panels, oh, and gummihar (sp?) padding for the seats....it's like
Christmas<g>....never hurts to let Mobile Tradition know there is a BIG
market out here for 2002 parts!!!!

Happy '02ing,

Yes easy. I have a 1x2 with some plywood squares on the ends to measure the
distance between a given tire groove at the front of the wheel and the rear
of the wheel.

Grant,

You may already know this, but Scott Miller & I didn't: the M3 visor won't
fit.

I agree...(for the most part). I actually like the design of the new 7
series...it still evokes in me that air of being successful yet humble,
albeit the new style does seem a little far from BMW's styling roots. I,
however, do not like the upcoming E60 5 series, if the photos I saw are what
will go into production. I think that the boom in BMW's sales in the US have
contributed to an idea that they should integrate more American styling,
leaving out the somewhat more flashy (but tasteful to insiders) European
design elements. IMHO the E28 5 series and the E24 6 series (and obviously
the E9 CSs) were pinnacles of classic BMW design, and even European design,
for that matter, evoking that sense of being a perfect balance between a
sports saloon and family car.

Subject: [uuc] <E46> BMW Design. ti.

Gruppe:

I just read an article in "Bimmer" on the new "ti".
Comments:

1. The under bumper front spoiler is really clean and
looks better than any other E46 spoiler except the M3.
Of course, the M3 spoiler would be too 'heavy' for
the ti. Actually the recessed foglamps, etc., are a
lot like the S4 spoiler and a very clean design. I
like!

2. The rocker panel moulding is nicely integrated into
the door panel curvature giving a machined look to the
whole car. Ups the 'perceived' panel tolerance by a
lot. I like that too. Very clean. Gives the car a
'carved from an ingot' appearance.

3. The headlamps are nice in that they integrate into
the clean-ness of the design. Sure, they do not look
as nice as the scooped out ones, but they sure look
better integrated into the design. The whole car does
not have a lot of detail and nor does the lamp area.
Very nicely integrated. Earlier cars have had a lot
of detail in the headlamp and front bumper area and
then run out of steam in the back. The E-klasse of
MBZ is an example as is the Z3 and the E38.

4. The tail-lamps are just plain ugly as are the ones
on the IS300, but these don't look as chintzy on
account of a greater smokiness that smooths out the
red inside. Also, in the recent past BMW seems to
have had an imbalance of design detail front to rear
(kind of the reverse of VW and Porsche which appear to
have nice rear ends, but shabby fronts!), with the
fronts being full of detail and the rears being plain.
E38, Z3, etc. This one is much more balanced, much
like the E30 was. I like this part too.

5. Looks good with the sports package wheels, which
are similarly clean in design. The busier looking
standard package wheels do not cut it aesthetically.
Also, the lighter colors are nicer as there is a lot
more metal in between the headlamps and the dark
colors would cause it too look too 'spotty' like the
S-type.

6. The under-hood and under-skin technology appears to
have taken substantial leaps! Now, that I really
like!

The same issue of "Bimmer" had a write-up on the E9
that Paul Cain has. What a wonderful car, but not w/o
the front spoiler and Alpina rims that Paul Cain has
tastefully added to it.
