I think BMW wheel > bolts are grade 10? Tips on wheel stud installation? > > Thanks for any info on this -Matt If I remember correctly, Metric bolt grading goes something like this: XX . x XX can be 5, 8, 10, 12, maybe others, too. It indicates the ultimate strength of the steel in kN/mm^2 (thousand Newtons per square millimeter). Ultimate strength is the point at which the part breaks. The .x number indiates the yield strength of the steel. Yield strength is the point at which the part deforms. In the case of things under tension (e.g. bolts) it stretches and will not return to its original length. So an 8.8 grade bolt has an ultimate strength of 8kN/mm^2, and its yield strength is 0.8 * 8kN/mm^2, or 7.4kN/mm^2. The higher the .x number, the less ductile the part is. It does not mean that it's brittle like ceramic, it just doesn't undergo as much deformation before it breaks. Theoretically, a 5.6 bolt will stretch a lot more before breaking than a 5.9 bolt will (but I don't think 5.9 hardware exists). To learn all about bolts, nuts, rivets, and other fasteners, read Carroll Smith's book euphemistically titled "Screw to Win", or something like: "Nut, Bolt and Fastener Handbook." Hell, read all of his books in the "... to Win" series--Prepare (his first), Tune, Engineer, and Drive. Drive to Win teaches you more about how to be a professional driver--obtaining and retaining sponsors, professional conduct, teammates, etc. He lists other books that teach you how to turn the wheel and press the pedals. For wheel studs, buy 10.9 or 12.9 grade, use Loctite 217 (red high-stren. You can buy threaded rod, but that's just begging for trouble--little better than mounting your wheels with sticks and mud. Turner's price is a little high, so try Racer Wholesale, Pegasus, etc. James [EMAIL PROTECTED] 88 M5 88 M3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think not Dave McLaren put his thoughts about design very close to my own, except he didn't mention any disappointments over the E46 design. For me, style and design aren't the same thing, though. Style is what everyone is driving (or wearing). Design is about proportion, esthetics and balance. Here are my criticisms of the E46 design: 1. The rear fenders are too narrow compared with the fronts. In fact the whole car tapers too much to the rear. Looking at the car from directly overhead really brings this out. This tapering gives the car a less aggressive stance, and reminds me of the old Citroens, some of which took this design to an extreme. The coupe suffers from this more than the 4-door, IMO. Put the E46 M3's rear fenders (with appropriately sized wheels/tires) on a standard E46 and the proportion would be just about right, IMHO. 2. The current trend (for aerodynamics, no doubt) in many cars is to smoothly blend the line from the windshield to the roof. This forces (at least on the E46 and the latest Porsche 911 & VW Beetle & Passat) the leading edge of the roof to be lower than the highest point of the roof, causing a bubble look. Do a side-by-side comparison of the profiles of the E36 and the E46, and you'll see what I mean. Don't do away with all the aerodynamic gains, just take a little of this bubble look away. 3. On the 4-door, the rear door lines from the bottom rear of the window to the bottom of the door, ignore the wheel arch. This makes an awkward looking body piece between the door and the wheel arch, which changes width from top to bottom. The E30 & E36 rear door shapes echoed the wheel arch shape, accentuating the arch, rather than ignoring it. Putting everything in perspective, I chose the E46 over the E36 when I bought in '99. Not for the styling, but mostly for what's under the skin: Double Vanos, ventilated rear discs, stronger & tighter (but heavier, I know) chassis, and slightly more interior room. Not to mention a few more years before inevitable obsolescence. My time spent behind the wheel (where I can't see these minor design flaws) is more enjoyable than time on the outside anyway. How many others really place styling over engineering? Certainly not some M coupe owners who admit that styling is secondary. I guess it's easier to take ugly when you get fast & quick in return, eh? Check the Compact Well, in the parts of this thread I've read, I don't think the the new 3-series Compact has been mentioned. Judging by this thing (I was thinking of 'hideous contraption', but it sounds a little harsh), yes they have lost their way. I don't care if it is a technical marvel, it still looks like BMW took the worst of Japanese and Opel design and added a kidney grill. Look, the rear wheel seems to be 2 inches smaller than the front one! How about that for cool! Don't get me wrong. I still think BMW designs some of the most distinctive and best-looking cars out there, but this one is a complete and forgettable flop (no wonder it isn't mentioned...) Matt, I just recently switched to studs and had an interesting experience. I checked around a bit and it seemed like Tire Rack had decent studs for a reasonable price. I ordered 25 of them which are supposed to be right length (for E30 M3) to use cap nuts which I also bought from them. Turns out the nuts were aluminum, which is probably ok but I prefer steel. Anyway, when they arrived I noticed that a number of them had knarfed (I think that's how ya spell that) up. I did my best to clean them up. I wasn't sure of the installation procedure and I didn't take the proper precautions such as cleaning up the hub threads. So, what happened to me is that I couldn't seat the studs to the proper depth...and didn't realize it either. I then put the wheels back on and everything seemed fine. Well I then get to Putnam Park and go to change wheels. Low and behold the nuts can't clamp down enough to hold the wheels! So I had to remove the studs completely...not fun. I called Tire Rack after talking with others who use the same type and returned them. I did more investigation and found out there are better and cheaper solutions out there. So, I ended up buying new studs from BBS directly (12.9 studs with hardened nuts). They are MUCH higher quality and cheaper as well. I had no problem seating them in the hubs with minimal cleaning....they looked good when I went to install them so I merely threaded in a lug bolt to make sure the path was clear. I also went to open end nuts so that length isn't an issue with different wheels....good idea! There are other, better solutions out there but they can be damn costly! If you would like more info lemme know...I'd pass it along right now but I'm really busy and I have to cut this short! Talk to you later.
