With silly slow speed limits, there is not enough to do to keep an average
brain awake while driving, so we compensate by adding activities.

Subject: [uuc] NY Bans Cell Phones for Drivers! WOOHOO!!!!

A number of years ago I had a collision with a cell phone user. He was
answering his cell phone at the time. He did not know which direction I even
came from and insisted I had passed illegally. When the police arrived he was
didn't mention that he didn't know what direction I was traveling in.
Fortunately for me the accident was witnessed by a taxi driver (who aborted
an illegal u turn due to the collision) and described exactly what he saw.
The driver was cited for not using proper care.

It may surprise a lot of you out there, America is by and large a law abiding
country. A new law will obtain some measure of compliance. Yes, it may be
selectively enforced but most laws are. Live with it.

Don:

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope it gets fixed
to your satisfaction. Particularly when driving in my
excessively lowered 89 iC (soon to go stock height) I
fear everthing on the road.

If you drove at night (and it sounds like you did),
how did you like the Xenons? I'd like to retrofit
them as one of my greatest long-distance driving fears
is hitting something I did not see and the stock lamps
do not seem to be enough for 70 mph cruising. Thank
God for US roads being so clean (mostly!).

BTW, Will Zaraska checked out an M5 for me in Toronto.
Excellent person to deal with. He does have some
nice M5s for sale usually.

buying of a '98 540i 6 speed and bringing it back from
Canada. Part two will be my first several days of
owning the car.

Anyone heard of this new model, the X5 4.6IS? I wonder what the specs

Donn,

My friend drove over a truck tire, also unavoidable,
and it actually totalled his '91 M5. It bent the frame
and broke the suspension. The only good thing is he
ended up with a '93 M5 Dinan Stroker to replace it.

Due to lack of planning and forethought, I need a retailer that carries
One Grand Blitz Wax in the Westchester, New York, south-western
Connecticut area. I want to wash and wax this weekend, but can't do
mail-order, obviously.

If anyone knows of a retailer or maybe a body-shop supply place in the
above-mentioned region, please let me know.

Thank you,

there should be specs on the BMW USA web site or perhaps on the main site. the
vehicle was at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

it's got a larger (4.6l), more powerful version of the standard 4.4l V8 in
540/740/X4 4.4i, uprated suspension, bigger wheels with lower profile tires,
sporty appearance, etc. it's not quite an ///M SAV, but is apparently more
sporty than the existing X5 4.4i

Ben
thinks the X5 is a waste of money...

Yeah, those truck tires are a lot tougher to run over when they're still
attached to the truck.

Question - are there any UUC people out there in Germany who might
talk to a local dealer about how those of us in the USA can order
a genuine BMW factory hitch?

I dl'd the installation instructions for a DaLan hitch from their
website for an E39. While the installation looks fairly easy, there
are noticeable differences between the hitch they sell, and the one
BMW gives installation instructions for on the CIS disk.

Besides having to drill holes for the DaLan, it only has support on
one side of the hitch-receiver, and also requires cutting of the
rear bumper valance.

According to the BMW CIS - the factory one doesn't require any
permanent mods to the car, and it comes with a wiring harness
that connects to the standard harness with no cutting or splicing
(and I imagine retains the bulb-out warning feature on the car..)

I would be VERY interested in obtaining a factory hitch (which for
some silly liability reason BMW doesn't sell in the US - although
they DO list on their website a genuine BMW trailer - for the 2
wheelers.. duh!)

Anyone??

I've had 7 wheels straightened there. As a matter of fact, my letter of
