Subject: [uuc] Happy Driving School Event at Shannonville (Ontario Canada) [long-ish]

Hello to all

Just completed my first performance driving day at Shannonville (race
track in Ontario Canada) and had a super time. The event was sponsored
by a local Porsche dealer (Pfaff), but by being a friend of a friend,
I received an invite. Out of ~40 cars there were 2 BMW's, mine a stock
86 325e and a significantly modified 88(ish) 318i(?)s. We spent the
morning learning theory, then onto the skid pad for control and
balance practice, from there to threshold braking practice. After the
morning of the instructors gaining confidence in us, we were allowed
onto the track after lunch. We spent the afternoon, receiving one on
one in car instruction on car handling while on the track.

This type of event should be mandatory for all drivers!

The day was excellent and I can now say that I have been bitten by the
"upgrade need bug" :^)

As a note, the 318 driver was significantly more experienced and drove
with the more advanced groups, but managed to proudly wave the BMW
flag during the event.

In my group of 8 vehicles, there were 2 and 4 WD Carerras and a couple
of modified Audi's and my stock 86 325e. I made an honest effort, but
there is an obvious need for suspension upgrades and to replace every
bit of rubber under the car, bushings as well as tires! During my last
track session, I could smell some fuel so I gave myself a "DNF" for
safety's sake (I learned this from J. Villeneuve, another Canadian
;-).

The day was great and I encourage everyone if you have an opportunity
to go on one of these events, do not pass it up.

Thanks for the bandwidth

Subject: [uuc] E30 Fuel Tank Assistance Required

Hello all

I need to R&R the fuel tank on my 86 325e.

To any of you that have performed this miracle, is there any wisdom
that you can share with me.

Earlier this year there was a thread about repairing tanks, any
conclusions?

I have a Hayes service manual and they do not give any real info, and
before anybody says anything, I have ordered a Bentley's and it should
be here in about 4-6 weeks :-(.

Symptoms:
- - When the tank is full, right hand turns cause me to pour (no
exaggeration here) fuel out of the tank.
- - hole not visible from underneath
- - fuel smell VERY strong in passenger compartment
- - lots of dripping happening when I stop with right side higher than
left side, ex. on a hill
- - dripping is focused onto area of secondary fuel pump under the LHS
of the car
- - dripping fuel is TOO CLOSE to exhaust pipe for comfort

Thanks in advance
Steve Osztertag

Hey people, could someone state for the record what the maximum towing
load is for the OEM BMW AG trailer hitches, or more specifically, an E36
328? I don't suppose the M3's additional power makes any difference in
that rating, but I wonder if a convertible has more or less rigidity
when under load (pulling).
Wouldn't mind hearing where we all can get our US denied, German
supplied hitches...seems my local trailer dealer said the 3 series, all
models, are limited to towing 2,000 lbs. No, I don't wanna pull a
Winnebago, but the 16 Airstream "Bambi" would probably slay my BMW,
right?

In one sentence you mention not using a BMW hitch because of the
metric balls.. then you mention not liking the only US alternative
I see because of how it mounts to the car (which I entirely agree
with, and the reason I'm not really considering the DeLan hitch..)

I'm still confused :-)

When I bought my M6 back in 1992 the service record was nearly an inch
think; upon closer examination, it was obvious the owner took the car to
the dealer for ANY problem- no matter how easy it was to rectify. For
example, he brought it in EVERY time the cover fell off the drivers
seatback hinge- a 10 second job to replace. If you can't fix something
that simple, you really ought to look into public transit.

Hi Folks -

Does anyone know the bore of the brake master cylinder on the E36M3 (96, if
it makes a difference)? Also, does anyone know if there's a bigger master
cylinder on any of the other BMWs that will fit on the E36M3 without major
modification?

Thanks in advance,

347 hp, 354 lb-ft? That's a good start.

Where's my V12/6-speed X5 6.0? I would talk to a loan officer if that were
available. Never mind that, I would look twice if the 6-speed were offered
in the regular 4.4 V8!

Am I missing something? Why do all auto manufacturers seem so intent on
perfectly matching or just barely exceeding their across-town rivals? BMW
has the hardware to do some over-the-top cars. Correction, make that "real
world" over-the-top cars. The Z8 is a brave and fantastic effort, but at
that price and rarity the chances of seeing one in my garage are pretty
slim. Instead of available exotica, we get BMW's version of Mercedes models
while VW moves upmarket to compete with BMW... and all along, Mercedes is
trying to catch VW's younger crowd. Vicious cycle right there.

But a V8 Z3... or a 560i... or even a 2.2l 4-cylinder based on the S54
tucked into a lightweight E46 Compact to affordably resurrect the spirit of
the E30 M3, performance of a different flavor that would not simply be the
M5's little sales-competitive brother. These things could happen. Mmmm...

Remember the days in the '70s when the American manufacturers were not
afraid to pull out all the tricks? Sure, 454ci in a small coupe, why not?
Cost was reasonable considering what you got. Now? Ugh. Now we get our
choice of the same SUV re-packaged in half a dozen brand-flavors.

Note to self: explore business potential of fiberglass X5 replica body
panels as re-fit kits on Pontiac Azteks. A fortune could be made right
there.

Just please do it so I dont have to look at another one of those damn butt
ugly things. What were they thinking? has to be right up there with the
pacer, NO, it has to be worse if you take into account when the pacer was
made compared to its siblings.

And I remember someone at O-fest was driving an Aztec around and they had a
BMW there too. They should lose the right to drive the BMW if they bought
an Aztec, ugh.

Waal, I saw a ML320 MB at a local used car place that
was a lemon law return. Sumpin' bout the "Check engine
light".

As to the website claims that "No MB/Lexus
sells above MSRP" Heck, when we bought our
Toyota Sienna *minivan*,some dealers wanted
MSRP plus with a 6 month wait!! Anyone bought
a new S-Class when they first came out?

It's the law of supply and demand.
