Ah, that's better. No more blocking of internet email and cancellation of bulletin subscriptions by watchful employers. Understandable as their actions are. Ben Keyes said about the 4.6i X5 ("X5 HP", as was) in response to an earlier query: > there should be specs on the BMW USA web site or > perhaps on the main site. The figures I read were 347 bhp (not sure SAE, but unlikely to be much different) and 354 lb-ft. I wonder whether this is the engine bound for the new 745i and 545i? "Evo" magazine of the UK ran a handling test and included an X5 - the first time an SUV had been considered by the magazine. They suggested that while the 4.4 was remarkably good and the 4.6 would be even better, there was still no escaping the rules of physics and the high curb weight. Although BMW has obviously come closer to bending those rules than anyone else. On a more sour note I have read of several road rage instances involving X5s in both Europe and here in Oz. Popular opinion suggests the car is as close to invincible as your average road warrior would want: faster and more accelerative than most sports cars, strong, grips well, big, tall and with an imposing snout for shovelling lesser beings out of the way. A bullymobile, if you will. No doubt some of it is driven by emotional factors, but all it takes is one nut behind the wheel... Now all we need to do is drive courteously and with due consideration for other road users, and maybe we can reverse the trend. But, here are some comments: "Steven Osztertag" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> "To any of you that have performed this miracle, is there any wisdom that you can share with me." Spend the $95 to buy a used southern tank! Also, when you go in there, prepare to fix the following: 1. Brake hard lines 2. Brake flex lines 3. Parking brake 4. Replace all fasteners I am doing all that stuff as they are all corroded by MI/OH salt and snow. "Earlier this year there was a thread about repairing tanks, any conclusions?" See above. The one I got is PERFECT! Since it is steam pressure washed, it even looks new. I need to make sure there is no moisture in it and I'll have a new tank. "I have a Hayes service manual and they do not give any real info, and before anybody says anything, I have ordered a Bentley's and it should be here in about 4-6 weeks :-(." Won't help! "When the tank is full, right hand turns cause me to pour (no exaggeration here) fuel out of the tank." Same thing! I would park on a slope and it would start dripping! "hole not visible from underneath" That is because it is the seam that is rusted apart. You'll see when I put up the pics. "fuel smell VERY strong in passenger compartment" Not for me, but you could smell it slightly. "lots of dripping happening when I stop with right side higher than left side, ex. on a hill" EXACTLY! "dripping is focused onto area of secondary fuel pump under the LHS of the car" EXACTLY! I have only the one pump though. "dripping fuel is TOO CLOSE to exhaust pipe for comfort" Well, yes, but the main leak was further outboard for me. I towed a small tire trailer with my used to be Da'Lan hitch equipped '98 M3. A light trailer, say under 800 pounds, tows easily. Even if the hitch were rated for 2,000#, I wouldn't go that high. Why not? The E36 has such a short wheelbase that control becomes an issue. In particular it can be a problem with a trailer approaching 2/3 your vehicle weight without its own brakes. We all know that BMW blessed our cars with great brakes and the extra weight alone isn't the problem. The issue is the fact that the weight is hanging waaaay out back connected to your car by a lever. Your hitch ball becomes the fulcrum. In a panic brake situation with your car wheels turned even slightly, the trailer can push the backend. This is very scary. It has happened to me with a too heavy trailer towed by a full-size pickup. Once you jack-knife the rig, you have screwed the pooch and are just a passenger. All that said, the E36 can pull a tire or small utility trailer easily and comfortably. Mine did for a couple of years. Larger, longer trailers require a heavier, longer wheelbase tow vehicle for stability and sway control. And take the time and small additional expense to add an electric brake controller to your tow vehicle. I won't tow anything over a ton that doesn't have its own brakes. ...ned. All across the GSM cell phone world (standard used in 100+ countries) the law is more or less there. In most all countries of the EU, Turkey, South Africa, Israel, etc. it is illegal to use your cell in the car (as a driver naturally) unless you have a hands free kit. Fines in South Africa vary by province but are around $100-150. In Switzerland its around $250, Turkey is similar (as friends who have been fined relate). A hands free kit is nice and if properly installed, cuts the radio so you have fewer distractions. Some US states have gone just a bit overboard in banning them altogether. I would like a small receiver hitch for my E34 Touring. I have a small go-kart trailer to tow sometimes (I tow it with a Vega, now) and I would also like one of those receiver mount bicycle racks. I was disappointed that the Da'Lan E34 trailer hitch is not a receiver type. The receiver gives me the flexibility for hanging a variety of racks and stuff. Whatever I end up with, I would want to have standard US type hitch balls (1 7/8 and 2 inch) and wiring so I can rent a U-haul and make it work. I don't think the Euro type wiring and hitch is conducive to that. I think the Euro wiring harness is a good start, but will need a conversion box and some custom work to connect to a US type trailer. My point is that there is no off the shelf hitch for an E34 that I want. So, how many of you with E34's want a trailer hitch?
