I've read up on what people recommend to spend (12-15k) to get a "decent" specimen which is fine for such a great car. My question is for your E30 M3 owners out there: These cars are 10 years old give or take, are they falling apart on you? I've heard great things about how well they were built; I wanted to ask owners if they consider their E30's to be maintenance hogs or nightmares or if they're pretty happy with the occasional tune-up and tweak? Like all BMWs, I expect pars and maintenance to be more expensive than another marque may be, but I know a lot of you E30 folks are using the car for exactly what I'm planning on - are you happy with it? Are you millionaires and the repair costs don't matter? Are you poor but making it work for the love of the track? Also, is there a E30-specific purchase/maintenance checklists like Larry F's for E28's or the popular Porsche 914 checklist? I searched the UUCdigest archives a bunch, but couldn't find anything. Thanks for any feedback! So after sending that post... I finally got the search terms right and stumbled across a post in the UUCdigest archive pointing to unofficialbmw.com which has a couple of E30 purchasing FAQs. Just what I was looking for. Feedback is still appreciated, but I'm sure this topic gets beat to death. Thanks everyone. There are 6 threaded inserts in the rear frame (Touring and sedan are the same) that appear to me to be trailer hitch mounting holes. It looks fairly easy to fabricate a receiver hitch that fits these holes. 2x2 tubing and some 1/4 inch thick brackets is all that is needed. If the BMW factory bracket is inexpensive enough, perhaps a receiver socket can be welded to it and save some fabrication. Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Let me know. The transmission plug was sheared right off, and half the threading in the transmission case is smooth. I met with the insurance adjuster at the BMW dealer today, and he seemed very reasonable about fixing everything, except for possibly the $5000 transmission. Of course. Two things he teed up that bothered me. One is whether the aluminum case can be welded to fix the plug, rather than replacing the whole transmission. He needs to speak to some higher up at Allstate to determine if they want to explore that. The other issue is that the transmission is a wearing component, so if they put a brand new one in to replace the 28000 mile one in the car now, they've "bettered" the car. And they would expect me to pay, say 15% of the cost of the transmission, to offset the fact that it now has a longer expected life. The fact that I will never own the car long enough to replace the transmission is neither here nor there. At the moment, he's just letting me know the potential obstacles to getting my car back quickly and right. Monday, he should let me know what Allstate management has to say. Any thoughts? I think I'm in for a fight, and a longer wait on getting the car back than I hoped. Other than that, everything's great. I was making a left turn on a yellow light, and some kid in an early to late 80's Honda or Toyota compact came careening down the street at 60+ mph, trying to make the light, and t-boning me on the passenger side....needless to say, Cassie was completely totalled and not salvageable. I was alone in the car, much to my happiness; if I had a passenger, they very likely would not have made it. Once I get the pics developed, I will scan them and fill you all in. I am ok, suffering only neck and wrist pain, and a small cut on my back and nose...otherwise I'm in perfectly good spirits and doing well. It truly was an amazing thing to see my car after the accident and then wonder how I actually made it through almost completely unscathed. At that, I very regretfully am informing all that I will no longer be an active participant on this digest, and will be changing my readership habits. Thanks to all for making the digest an excellent place for all BMW enthusiasts everywhere, and for maintaining such a good support and information circle for all who desire individual and personalized help with their BMWs (and other vehicles :P ). A southern tank may be very much rusted on the inside due to humidity which weakens the walls and also clogs the fuel pump with particles. I put in a new one when I built my track car to be safe. I do not know your mechanical expertise nor how far you want to go with this car but you can do some improvements while working on this. If you order an 88-91 tank you increase your fuel capacity to 16.6 gallons from 14.5 gallons. You will also lose the crossover tube that runs under the driveshaft between the two sumps. To change the tank you will need to go with the single in-tank high pressure pump of the same year range and lose the outside pump. Most of the rest of the procedure is to drain the fuel out of the tank through the drain plug. Remove the rear seat bottom to access the service panel. Remove panel and disconnect the hoses and wires on top of the tank. Disconnect the filler hose and vent hose running to the right side quarter panel. Remove drive shaft, cat back exhaust and then the bolts holding the tank. The install is the reverse. Buy pressure line and replace all fuel lines while under there. As Neil writes, this is a good time to replace or upgrade brake line components while the tank is out and you can work around the rear subframe. In most all countries of the EU, Turkey, South Africa, Israel, etc. it is illegal to use your cell in the car (as a driver naturally) unless you have a hands free kit. Fines in South Africa vary by province but are around $100-150. In Switzerland its around $250, Turkey is similar (as friends who have been fined relate). A hands free kit is nice and if properly installed, cuts the radio so you have fewer distractions. Some US states have gone just a bit overboard in banning them altogether.
