Of course, there are custom-built versions with everything from the larger 4.0l V8 to the 3.0/3.2 M3 6-cylinder (hi Eric!). I believe (I stand ready for correction).. that the 540iT was never sold in the US.. only the 525iT and 530iT made it to these shores. 540iT might be a tough one to find, although it was made and sold in Europe.. Dunno where you are, but I vaguely remember reading an ad for a 530iT in the local paper this morning (Asbury Park Press, NJ).. Oh, the 530iT's do appear on Ebay Motors with some regularity. FWIW (and I'm certain to piss someone off with this..), I drove a friends 530iT and came away singularly unimpressed by the power.. plus the car felt heavy. If I was looking, I'd (and I was for a while) be looking for a 525iT. I suspect long-term resale value will be higher on the 525iT since it doesn't have the reputation for engine problems both the V8's of that era had. Perhaps a little more than the occasional tune-up because of their age. After replacing bushings, mounts, etc you'll have one hell of a car. >I know a lot of you E30 folks are using the >car for exactly what I'm planning on - are you happy with it? Absolutely, one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. It's very good for autox, fantastic for track events (it's a great car to learn in), and as for daily driving I did it with mine for over a year and I still take it to work once or twice a week because I miss the way it corners. :) >I searched the UUCdigest archives a bunch, but couldn't find anything. There's a post from Bob Stommel floating around with a checklist, he speaketh the truth, use it. One thing I would stress is to get the motor checked out for sure, that's the one thing that can bite you about these cars. Everything else is just like buying any other BMW, get it checked by a pro to avoid expensive repair costs later on. Also if you're serious about it join the E30 M3 SIG on www.bimmers.com, I think the cost is $12/year but definitely a fantastic source for info especially if you're willing to wrench on the car yourself. Even if you wanted to stay with the automatic, the diff by itself would do a lot for acceleration. >From when those cars were brand new, I always thought they were singularly unappreciated. Probably explains why I eventually ended up with my own Touring. The great thing about the Touring chassis is that it really can "do it all"... it's got fantastic front seat room, reasonable rear room, voluminous cargo capacity, and even a basic 525iT's handling can be taken up a notch or two with some very basic strut/spring/sway bar upgrades. Larger brakes are available from such donors as the M5, 540i, and 850i/Ci/CSi. Reminds me of a story; about a year ago, I was cruising up the New Jersey Turnpike, staying about 10 car-lengths behind a new Chrysler New Yorker. Very little other traffic was around and we were cruising 85-90mph in the center of three lanes. Not racing, chasing, or fooling around at all, just two cars at a safe distance doing a reasonable velocity for the conditions. Suddenly a NJ State Trooper comes flying up behind us in the left lane, he must have been doing about 115mph+ judging by his closing speed. He flew right past me, slotted in behind the Chrysler, and fired up his light show to pull the Chrysler over. Nice to be in an invisible "station wagon" during a revenue collection event. - - Rob > From: Don Eilenberger <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: RE: [uuc] Looking for E34 540i Touring > > FWIW (and I'm certain to piss someone off with this..), I drove > a friends 530iT and came away singularly unimpressed by the power.. > plus the car felt heavy. I have compiled a checklist on both the E30 and E34 M5 on my WWW site - http://www.neilwerke.com. While these lists are being revised with pictures and such they are pretty decent as of now. For the E30 M3 engine, you should probably read the M5 engine stuff and go with that. The chassis has the same issues as the regular E30s. BTW, my 1988 325 iS with 200k miles in not falling apart on me at all. I would recommend you look for a no-salt no-snow car even if you have to drive cross country. When you make repair, and you will, this will cut times by a lot. Trust me! Neil Deshpande 1988 325 iS - rusty parts being changed out! 1989 325 iC - rust-free and easy to work on! 1992 M5 - rust-free and too pristine to work on! http://www.neilwerke.com *** Brian Ghidinelli <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I'm currently researching purchasing an E30 M3 to be used as a weekend/track/autox/fun car. I've read up on what people recommend to spend (12-15k) to get a "decent" specimen which is fine for such a great car. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Looking inside the tank I got I find not a trace of rust anywhere. The outside of the tank is so clean the paint is actually glossier than my exterior paint. You're right though. The used tank is probably not as good as a new one. However, there is a 3x cost factor. "I put in a new one when I built my track car to be safe." Probably a good idea! I'm going to track mine too, but I think the used tank is fine. "I do not know your mechanical expertise nor how far you want to go with this car but you can do some improvements while working on this. If you order an 88-91 tank you increase your fuel capacity to 16.6 gallons from 14.5 gallons. You will also lose the crossover tube that runs under the driveshaft between the two sumps. To change the tank you will need to go with the single in-tank high pressure pump of the same year range and lose the outside pump." Yes, they are interchangable and the later tank is a good upgrade. Count on paying out a bit more for the pump though. About $150 new and $50 used. I already had the later tank.
